Video: LaFerrari gets shakedown from Fernando Alonso

Video of Fernando Alonso driving Ferrari LaFerrari

Fernando Alonso is quite cool behind the wheel, as evidenced by an earlier video where he gave a full interview while actively hooning a Ferrari F12 around the Nürburgring. So when you see the Spaniard somber-faced and sweating while hustling a Ferrari LaFerrari around the Scuderia’s Fiorano test track, you know the new hypercar is pretty demanding.

Alonso doesn’t give commentary on this one (except to the engineers at the end), but he does wrestle the 949-horsepower hybrid around the track. It does look like a handful. Take a look below for the full video.

Quick Spin: 2014 Porsche Panamera 4S Executive

Filed under: Performance, Hatchback, Porsche, Luxury, Quick Spins

2014 Porsche Panamera Executive

If the idea of a Porsche sedan (or, long hatchback) is still off-putting to you, then you might want to look away now. For 2014, the polarizing Panamera has received a midcycle refresh bringing slightly different styling, as well as adding two new models to the lineup, the S E-Hybrid and the stretched-wheelbase Executive. Having focused most of my recent trip to Germany on a First Drive of the intriguing plug-in Panamera, I also got to spend some time with the roomier Executive model.

Offered in both 4S and Turbo guise, the Panamera Executive has been stretched by almost six inches for the sole purpose of improving rear passenger space. Although it’s hard to imagine anyone would willingly buy a Porsche and opt to sit in the back seat, I’d have to say that if I’m going to be chauffeured around in a car, why not make it a Porsche? For the most part, though, I’m guessing that many Panamera Executive sedans will be owned by people who want to one-up their buddy driving a stretched BMW 7 Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Driving Notes:

  • Regardless of who is going to buy this car, it’s hard to argue with the amount of space and luxury afforded to rear-seat occupants on the Executive models. Whatever time I wasn’t behind the wheel, I spent sitting in the rear seat. Not that the standard Panamera rear seat is cramped, but there is plenty of room to stretch out in the Executive. Porsche has yet to release official figures for rear legroom or total passenger volume to give exact comparisons, but suffice it to say that the extra room in the Executive is noticeable. Both rear buckets recline and offer adjustable lumbar support, but the right side is the place to be since the front passenger seat can be controlled from the rear, and moved out of the way.
  • For optimal comfort, each rear seat has its own climate control zone (with individual controls for left and right passengers) and all four seats are heated and ventilated. A pair of small vanity mirrors were also added into the rear headliner as a finishing touch.
  • Porsche made plenty of styling changes to the Panamera for 2014, and while most are relatively minor, there’s no missing the six-inch wheelbase stretch. A lot of the car’s finer details look to have been inspired by the 2012 Sport Turismo Concept, but it all looks good, and the wheelbase stretch doesn’t look awkward. At the right angles, it’s even a little challenging to tell the Executive models apart from a standard-length Panamera.
  • The front quarters of the 2014 Panamera’s cabin have changed little. This means that the absurd amount of buttons and switches carry over from last year. However, the addition of some new technologies do make living with this stretched car a bit easier. The new Surround View option, for instance, gives a bird’s-eye view of the car when backing up but can also be changed using the touch screen to give six different views of the car using seven exterior cameras.
  • While the styling changes and the new models have grabbed most of the headlines, I was looking forward to driving the new 4S Executive more for its new engine. Replacing the previous 4.8-liter V8, S and 4S models are now powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 putting out 420 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque – that’s 20 more hp and 25 more lb-ft than the outgoing engine.
  • If I had to describe this new engine in a single word, it would be “strong.” I’ve never had a problem with the Panamera’s acceleration, but this new 4S Executive model, which packs on an extra 300 pounds over the non-stretched 4S, is still impressively quick. Porsche specs a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds for the Executive equipped with the Sport Chrono option. For comparison’s sake, the Panamera 4S Executive is less powerful and 400 pounds lighter than a comparable BMW 750Li xDrive, but it can hit 60 mph a tick faster and should get better fuel economy, too – although final 2014 estimates have not been released yet.
  • Thanks to the standard adaptive air suspension, the Panamera managed to offer a sporty ride that handled the twist roads of the Bavarian Alps quite well, while still offering a smooth, comfortable experience when desired. Top speed is listed at 177 miles per hour, and I almost made it there as I blasted down the Autobahn at 175 mph (my new personal land-speed record, by the way).
  • Opting for the extra rear space will cost you, literally, as the 4S Executive’s starting price of $125,600 is a $27,000 premium over the standard-length 4S, which means that you’re paying $4,500 per added inch! While an exact as-tested price wasn’t available, I calculated using the consumer website that this car would retail for $133,780 as equipped. The Turbo Executive is almost $20,000 more than the Panamera Turbo with a base price of $161,100. That makes it the most expensive Panamera in the model lineup, and the second-most expensive model in Porsche’s whole 2014 lineup. Still, it could be worth the money for that extra 100 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque.
  • We can all thank car buyers in China (with a penchant for long wheelbases) for the existence of the Panamera Executive, but credit definitely goes to Porsche for making this car as fun as it is. There are no lack of long-wheelbase alternatives on the market, but there’s just something a little more exciting about driving a car that already looks like a stretched 911. I mean if you’re going to schlep friends and family around town or punch the clock chauffeuring wealthy business people, why not do it in a Porsche, right?

Auctions: eBay Find of the Day: Ayrton Senna’s 1993 Honda NSX

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Europe, Acura, Honda, Celebrities

1993 Acura NSX reportedly formerly owned by Ayrton Senna, is up for auction on eBay.

It’s not often that things owned by the late Ayrton Senna come up for sale, but the seller of this black-on-black 1993 Honda NSX (aka, Acura NSX) eBay find claims it was once owned by the Formula One legend, and that he left a footprint on the factory carpet that can still be seen today. (Footprint, or vacuum lines?…)

NSX no. T000999 was given to Senna as a gift from his mentor and sponsor, Antonio de Almeida Braga, the seller claims, and it was stored at a palace near the Estoril F1 circuit in Portugal. He also was known to drive two other NSXs, a black one and a red one – the latter in which he was seen often.

The seller claims to have owned T000999, which is still in Portugal, for 17 years, and the 31,000-mile odometer indicates it was driven about 1,500 miles per year on average. Thankfully the car has been kept stock, so whoever buys it can enjoy driving it just as Senna did – that is, if the car actually is what it’s claimed to be. If the story checks out, then this is one valuable NSX, which is reflected in the high minimum starting bid of 47,500 pounds ($73,620). There have been no bids at time of writing, but with nine days left in the auction, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this one.

Senna is credited with improving the development of the mid-engine Honda when he told engineers after a test drive that the car needed to be more rigid. After eight months more chassis development, the car was stiffer and the suspension was finely tuned to Senna’s satisfaction. The rest is history, as Honda stunned the world – and a few supercar manufacturers – soon after when it released the excellent NSX in 1990.

Official: Toyota Hilux Invincible sounds as robust as it looks

Filed under: Truck, Europe, Work, Off-Road

Toyota HiLux Invincible

The Hilux might not be the only Toyota product that we Americans don’t get, but with respect to our collective want for JDM jewels like the Alphard, Aygo and of course the noble Crown, it’s the forbidden-fruit pickup that we most lust after. As you’d suspect, announcing a new Invincible trim-level for the truck doesn’t make us want the thing any less, either.

Toyota Europe announced some specifics of the HiLux Invincible in a press release today, noting that the new grade adds a does of style to match the trucks hard-won reputation for toughness. Chrome accents, two-tone alloy wheels and an all-black leather package don’t exactly scream “indomitable” to us, but the Hilux does look pretty spiffy.

In terms of function, the Invincible should still prove plenty rugged. The truck can be had with two-or four-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmissions and with the buyer’s choice of a 2.5-liter or 3.0-liter diesel engines. Follow on to find a brief press release from Toyota Europe.

Tesla Model S scores five stars in NHTSA crash tests [w/video]

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, Videos

Tesla Model S NHTSA crash

Tesla Motors is having a good week. Right after the California-based maker of the Model S electric vehicle reported better than expected earnings and vehicle-production numbers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) let it be known that the Model S received five-star crash-test ratings, according to Automotive News. That means the sedan received the best possible marks for frontal and side-impact crashes, as well as for rollover. The bad news: some Teslas were destroyed in the process. It’s part of a trend. Earlier versions of the Model S also received top crash test scores last year. Before that, the all-electric Roadster also passed crash tests back in 2008.

A refresher on the other good news of the week: Tesla announced Wednesday that it increased sales to 5,150 vehicles for the second quarter, and said it may double production next year. After reporting its first profit in the first quarter, Tesla’s second-quarter gross margin was 22 percent and may reach 25 percent by year-end. Tesla’s second-quarter revenue was $405.1 million and the company narrowed its second-quarter loss to $30.2 million from a $105.5 million loss a year earlier.

You can check out several Model S crash-test videos below, though you might want to cover your eyes.

2014 Jeep Cherokee configurator screencap

Production delays aside, Jeep is steaming towards its September on-sale date for the 2014 Cherokee. The reborn midsizer’s configurator has just gone live, meaning you can fiddle with different options, colors and trim levels to your heart’s content.

The cheapest model available is the 4X2 Sport, which starts at a reasonable $22,995. On the high end, the Cherokee’s builder allowed us to indulge our passion for ludicrously priced vehicles by outfitting the top-end Trailhawk, which already starts at $29,495, with $8,610 in options. The resulting car, which you can see above, would retail for $39,100 after the $995 destination is factored in.

Head on over to Jeep’s build-it-yourself website and have a look around.

Report: Initial D manga ends 18-year run with ‘Final Stage’

initial D

Initial D, the Japanese manga that helped popularize drifting and make the AE-86 generation Toyota Corolla (Trueno in Japan) the cult classic that it is today, has finally ended after 18 years of publication. The last installment, called Final Stage, was released in late July, in the August 6 edition of Young Magazine, reports The Truth About Cars.

If you don’t read the manga (a Japanese comic) perhaps you’ve watched the anime (a Japanese animated movie or TV show) series that it spawned, or the live-action movie from 2005 (which has some cool drifting scenes). What stands out the most about Initial D are the cars, which are drawn accurately and animated fluidly on paper or the TV screen – representing an acute understanding by the technical artists of how cars look and behave while they’re being driven.

As is often the case with manga-anime relationships, the Initial D manga takes storyline priority with the anime following loosely behind. Though the manga has ended, TTAC reports that another series of Initial D episodes (and another live-action movie) will be produced to tie things up for fans of the anime.

Report: Inventor’s electric vehicle charger triggers bomb scare in Denmark

Filed under: Etc., Europe, Government/Legal, Technology, Electric

Danish Police and Bomb Squad officers on the site of a suspected car bomb in an underground car park, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, as police seal off parts of central Copenhagen. A Swedish-registered vehicle with suspicious pipes and wiring in an underground parking lot caused police to temporary seal off parts of central Copenhagen, but the device was later found to be scientific experiment, police said Tuesday. (AP Photo/Jens Dresling/POLFOTO) DENMARK OUT

A project manager and director for Swedish Television had parts of Copenhagen locked down for three hours on August 6, when his electric car invention scared passersby in an underground parking lot into thinking it was a bomb, Perth Now reports. Copper pipes and wire poking out from underneath a car and other odd equipment caused the panic, but a bomb squad cleared the car after realizing it was some kind of scientific experiment.

The inventor, Dan Zethraeus, reportedly confirmed that the crude device is, in fact, part of an experiment to develop a new way to power electric cars directly from the road. He didn’t give any other details on the device, citing his lack of a patent for the technology.

The scare happened when Zethraeus was on vacation in the Danish capital – he had decided to travel without removing the suspicious equipment. In the future, he says, he will remove the equipment before embarking on road trips. Sounds like a pretty good idea, no?

Video: Powerball winner’s first purchase will be used Acura NSX off Craigslist

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Acura

Video of Powerball winner Paul White

We don’t play the lottery very often, but when we do, even a five-dollar win is cause for celebration. So we can’t possibly imagine how Paul White from Minnesota is feeling after scoring a third of this week’s $448 million Powerball jackpot. It has to be an overwhelming experience, but we think he’s going to end up handling it well if his first press conference is any indication.

Like some of us, White has a pretty reasonable idea of what his first purchase is, and boy, is it a good one: an early Acura NSX. Yes, this man has class. Rather than run out and buy a clichéd Rolls-Royce or Lamborghini, his first instinct is to go pick up a $30,000 Acura that he has been eyeing on Craigslist for months. It’s enough to make us wonder if he’ll use his winnings to get on the list for one of Acura’s new NSXs when they finally come around in 2015.

Watch White describe what it is about the NSX that makes heart skip a beat in the press conference video from USA Today below (note: video autoplays).

Video: CarTube answers what happens when you add YouTube to cars

Braly Political makes a video about what would happen if YouTube made apps for cars. Enter CarTube.

We’ve already found out what can happen to people when they drive while operating their cell phones, and it can be tragic. There are plenty of studies on distracted driving that show use of mobile devices while behind the wheel is both dangerous and increasingly commonplace, and the obvious solution, voice-controlled technology, might also be more dangerous than we thought.

But technology doesn’t slow down for anybody. With digital media devices becoming an inescapable part of our lives, YouTube applications have become so popular that the video service can be operated on almost anything with a screen. But there’s one frontier YouTube hasn’t conquered: the automobile. Could you imagine what would happen if we could watch videos on car windshields, or had a keyboards mounted to steering wheels? We’re glad Barely Political dared to imagine (but we hope YouTube doesn’t), and then made a hilariously creepy video about it for YouTube’s Geek Week called Introducing CarTube. All we ask is that this one stays in the idea box.

We won’t spoil the fun, so be sure to watch the video below – this one shouldn’t be missed!
