Report: Scion exec admits brand has too many dealerships, may contract network

2013 Scion FR-S - front three-quarter, red

Despite being conceived by corporate giant Toyota, Scion painstakingly built its reputation on being something of an offbeat, youth-minded brand, working hard to establish individualist, almost hipster-like credentials. So it comes as something of a surprise to hear WardsAuto report that Scion has a whopping 1,000 dealers across America – just 200 fewer than Toyota itself. This, despite a much smaller product portfolio and a sliver of the sales volume.

All those factors may explain why Bill Fay, US group vice president for Toyota, is admitting to the industry publication that its dealer network “might actually go down a little bit.” As it stands, the volume end of the equation is probably an even bigger incentive – Scion’s sales are way down from the salad days of the mid-2000s, when the brand had fewer models but sold more of them. With the (then) white-hot xB and tC models, Scion shifted 173,034 units in 2006, while Ward’s notes the marque’s 2013 sales are only at 41,261 units through July. In the story, AutoPacific analyst Dave Sullivan observes that other low-volume brands have far fewer dealer points, noting that Mini has just 115 dealer points and Infiniti has 200. By Sullivan’s estimate, he would expect to see 350-500 Scion stores based on its sales figures.

Dealer question aside, the bigger issue is where the brand goes from here, and Fay admits Toyota is studying a number of different strategies, including possibly going “small-premium.” Nothing is finalized, though according to Ward’s, Fay discounts the idea that the FR-S – the brand’s sales bright spot – will drive the brand to consider a more driver-oriented lineup.

Official: Smart Fortwo Electric Drive lease now $139/mo

Filed under: Car Buying, Convertible, Coupe, Budget, Smart, Electric

Electric cars seem to be getting more affordable by the day, and the latest to get a price drop is the 2013 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. With sales currently limited to only a handful of states, the Smart Fortwo ED is preparing for its nationwide rollout by offering a 36-month lease of the Fortwo ED Coupe for as low as $139 per month – or the same price as the non-electric Fortwo. The previous Fortwo ED leases started at $199 a month.

Available until September 3, conditions of this lease include a down payment of $1,999 and signing up for the Battery Assurance Plus battery-lease program, which is a separate lease for the battery at $80 per month. This means that lessees are actually driving the Fortwo ED for just $59 each month, although a mileage cap is set at 30,000 miles. There has been no price drop for those interested in purchasing a 2013 Fortwo ED, however, as has been the case with rival EVs like the Ford Focus Electric, Nissan Leaf and, most recently, the Chevy Volt.

As an added bonus, Smart is also giving its dealers a $2,000 incentive on the Fortwo, which can be used in any way the dealer wishes – local advertising, lowering the asking price for consumers, etc. AutoblogGreen‘s Sebastian Blanco has put together quite a bit more info on the Smart Fortwo ED lease, click thru to read more.

Official: Toyota promises Hybrid-R concept for Frankfurt

Filed under: Concept Cars, Frankfurt Motor Show, Hybrid, Technology, Toyota

Toyota Hybrid-R Concept badge

Toyota will be bringing a new concept car to the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Dubbed Hybrid-R, Toyota says the concept will feature the same Toyota Hybrid System-Racing tech found in the automaker’s latest endurance car, the TS030 Hybrid.

That car took second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a gas-powered, 3.4-liter, naturally aspirated V8 and a capacitor-based hybrid system. The result was 530 ponies from the engine and an extra 300 horsepower from the electric motor and batteries.

Toyota’s press release came with but one image, a new Hybrid badge which is a far cry from the Hybrid Synergy Drive label found on the automaker’s other offerings. There’s really not much else to go on yet, but the news that Toyota is already adapting its racing tech for a concept bodes well for the future of exciting, hybridized offerings from the automaker. We’ll be at Frankfurt live, and will be sure to bring you all the news on this new concept as it becomes available.

Study: Six small cars earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards [w/video]

2013 Honda Civic Sedan IIHS crash test
IIHS Top Safety Pick + Award
The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety has released the results of its latest small overlap front crash tests, and there’s a surprise among small cars. IIHS tested 12 cars, half of which managed “Good” or “Acceptable” ratings overall, qualifying them for the the coveted Top Safety Pick+.

Top Safety Pick+ is still a fairly rare achievement since the new small overlap crash tests were instituted, as it’s taken manufacturers time to design, engineer, build and bring to market cars that can score well on the new metric.

The overlap front crash test covers the car’s structure, restraint systems and kinematics, as well as measuring the “injuries” the crash test dummy’s heads, necks, chests, hips, thighs, legs and feet.

The highest scorers were the Honda Civic Sedan, followed closely by the Civic Coupe. These were also the only two to earn overall scores of “Good.” The Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Scion tC all earned acceptable scores overall, which was still enough to qualify them for the TSP+ rating. The bottom half of the test included the Chevrolet Sonic, Volkswagen Beetle, Chevrolet Cruze, Nissan Sentra, Kia Soul and Kia Forte.

Only 25 models have earned the TSP+ rating so far, which requires cars to earn “Good” ratings for occupant protection in four out of five tests, while scoring at least an acceptable on the fifth test.

Official: 2014 Toyota Tundra gets five grades priced from $25,920*

Filed under: Car Buying, Truck, Work, Toyota, Off-Road

2014 Toyota Tundra front three-quarter view

Toyota has announced pricing details for its refreshed 2014 Tundra, with the fullsize pickup offered in five grades. Naturally, that doesn’t include the buyer’s choice of three cab styles, the option of two- or four-wheel drive, and a choice of a 4.0-liter V6 base engine or 4.6-liter and 5.7-liter V8s.

The base SR starts at $25,920, while the volume SR5 model starts at $29,465. Toyota notes that all SR5s ordered with the big V8 hold the line on pricing from 2013 while including a further $650 in standard equipment. The first of three high-end trims, Limited, starts at $36,940, while the Platinum and 1794 Edition both start at $44,270, with all prices subject to a $995 destination charge. Also noteworthy on the cost-savings front, Limited CrewMax 4×4 models are priced $2,000 less than their 2013 equivalents, (4×2 buyers save $1,900).

As is typical for a model as as customizable as a pickup, Toyota’s pricing structure is far from simple. Adding the 5.7-liter V8 at one trim level can cost several hundred dollars more or less than another trim level – the same goes for adding four-wheel drive. So, rather than break out the Enigma Machine to try and decipher what options cost what on which trim, we’ve just rolled the whole pricing chart in. Scroll down for a look, including Toyota’s full press release, and then check out our recent First Drive feature of the truck.

Spy Shots: 2014 Nissan Rogue gives us our best look yet

2014 Nissan Rogue spy shots

Nissan is reportedly fast-tracking the development of its next-generation Rogue crossover, and judging by this latest set of spy shots, the new small CUV is coming along quite nicely.

To no one’s surprise, the new Rogue takes the vast majority of its design cues from the Hi-Cross concept that debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and specific elements like the pronounced wheel arches, angular nose, flat roofline and more stylized taillmaps should make for a Rogue that’s far more style conscious than the model it replaces. This stronger design language should help the new Rogue to better stand out in the sea of Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 rivals.

There’s far more to the new Rogue than just some swoopier sheetmetal, though. This crossover is expected to be the first vehicle to ride on the Renault-Nissan CMF (Common Module Family) platform, an architecture flexible enough to eventually support a host of new products. As we reported earlier, the next Rogue will be built in the US, in Tennessee.

According to our spies, Nissan plans to launch the new Rogue in the 2014 model year, and we won’t rule out a possible debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November. For now, take a gander these new spy shots.

Report: Court upholds pension cuts to 100 retired GM execs

ARCHIV: Das Logo von General Motors und ein blaues Lichtband zieren das Renaissance Center in Detroit (Foto vom 08.06.11).

100 retired executives from General Motors will soldier on with smaller pensions after a trio of judges in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, ruled in favor of the automaker. The dispute stemmed from the requirements made by the Obama administration as part of GM’s bankruptcy and restructuring, according to a report from The Detroit News.

The gist of the suit is that the former execs thought their pensions were being calculated one way for the purpose of the cuts, while the automaker was actually counting a different way, with GM factoring in a salaried retirement plan into the executive retirement plan. The judges in the appeals case sided with a 2011 ruling by US District Court Judge George Caram Steeh.

One of the conditions for the bailout was that GM needed to trim all executive pensions worth over $100,000 per year by up to two-thirds. Not surprisingly, some execs weren’t pleased about this. As The Detroit News notes, former CEO Rick Wagoner saw his pension fall from $20 million to $8.5 million.

According to The News, trimming the pensions of the top executives alone saved $221 million per year, while overall pension and health care cuts added up to $4.6 billion in savings.

Video: Toyota builds world’s first ‘outdoor website’ for RAV4 promo

toyota rav-4 outdoor website with bike rider

This whole thing started with the premise that Toyota’s target RAV4 buyers are people who spend their time cycling, hiking, and generally not in front of computer screens. These people are therefore not able to benefit from the full website experience that Toyota has built for the RAV4. We should clarify that the video below is for Toyota South Africa, and maybe RAV4 buyers there really are the disgustingly outdoorsy ideal that us bacon-eaters are not living up to.

Toyota’s agency partner, Hello Computer, set up a 1.8-kilometer track at a cycle park that replicated sections of the automaker’s website with real physical displays and interactive feedback. Riders were asked to leave their mouses and hit the trail on a mountain bike to experience the RAV4 Outdoor Website and learn about the vehicle.

That seems like a lot of effort for something that’s available on the smartphones of these hyper-active people who aren’t in front of computers, but hooray for creatively conquering a problem that didn’t exist. Hey, let’s not be complete wet blankets – maybe some of the cyclists that ran the Toyota gauntlet got a RAV4 for their to- and fro-ing after the experience. Check out the video of the outdoor website below.

Report: Cameron’s iconic house from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is for sale. Again.

Cameron Frye's garage from Ferris Bueller's Day Off - real estate listing

We can’t fathom why somebody didn’t swoop up this famous house in Highland Park, Illinois, when it was first offered for sale in 2009, and again in 2011 – especially considering its role in the hit 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. But if shoppers were holding off due to the price, it’s time for them to take another look: since 2009, the home on 370 Beech St. has dropped from $2.3 million to $1.65 million, and now, to $1.5 million.

The Chicago-area home, which was Ferris Bueller’s friend Cameron Frye’s house in the movie, has four bedrooms, glass walls, and was built by notable architect A. James Speyer in 1953. The detached garage, an add-on built in the 1970s where the owner stored his classic cars, is also where Cameron sent his dad’s 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder plummeting to its death into the ravine behind it. (Don’t worry, the car was actually a replica made with MG underpinnings – not one of the 55 examples ever made).

Now, with that price reduction, perhaps the future owner will have a bit of money left over to rehab the kitchen stage a reenactment of the famous scene – with a Ferrari replica, of course.
