Report: Are you the 2015 Nissan Versa facelift?

Filed under: Spy Photos, Budget, Sedan, China, Nissan, Design/Style

The current-generation Nissan Sunny – the overseas equivalent to the Versa sedan – has been around since 2010, and now it appears that Nissan has some small changes in store for it. Based on these small, dark and grainy photos from Chinese site, Auto Sohu, the Sunny could be set to receive a slight styling refresh.

From what we can tell, the biggest change will be to the headlights with the Sunny getting boomerang-style units similar those on current Nissan sedans in the US. We wouldn’t be surprised to see these changes to carry over to our Versa sedan soon. Grille and fascia changes also seem to be in the works, but it’s hard to make out any other changes from these images alone.

Official: 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel gets 9,200-pound tow rating

The current-generation Ram 1500 is entering its fifth year on the market, but Ram’s half-ton truck is not showing its age whatsoever. While we continue to wait for the fuel economy figures for the all-new EcoDiesel V6, Ram has released towing figures for trucks equipped with this new engine, as well as models fitted with the upgraded gasoline-powered V6.

The EcoDiesel – a $2,850 option – will help the Ram compete with V8-powered trucks with its max towing capacity of 9,200 pounds, which is just 50 pounds shy of the 2013 Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter V8. The true benefit here is that the diesel should return impressive fuel economy in the process, and even though official estimates have yet to be released, Chrysler has promised that it will achieve more than 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

But even with the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6, upgrades to the eight-speed automatic transmission have resulted in an increase in towing capacity, now up to 7,450 pounds. This number is expected to be best in class for base-engine trucks.

Video: Honda celebrates the life of Ayrton Senna the best way it knows how

Filed under: Motorsports, Japan, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Honda

Honda is returning to Formula One in 2015 with McLaren, and when that engine maker and that F1 constructor are mentioned together, two other words are never far behind: Ayrton Senna. There are engine suppliers, constructors and drivers that have bigger numbers, but those three form a triumvirate that came close to defining F1 in the eighties.

Honda Japan has produced a commercial called Sound of Honda that celebrates Senna at a race that turned out to be one of the most momentous of his career for good and bad reasons: the 1989 grand prix at Suzuka where he won, then was stripped of, the driver’s championship.

The commercial has a terrifically simple premise – there’s no CG, no old footage of Senna, no one says a word, it’s just sound. And it’s pretty damn good. Check it out below.

Quick Spin: 2014 Roush Stage 3 Mustang

Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Ford, Quick Spins

2014 Roush Stage 3 Mustang

Up until now, it’s been some years since I managed to get behind the wheel of the hot Mustangs tuned by the folks at Roush Performance. My memories of those vehicles are fond, as the Roush up-fits usually make for better-driving examples of the iconic Ford pony, with better-tuned suspensions, excellent short-shift kits and, of course, huge additions of power. The wake-your-neighbors aural characteristics of these cars have been nothing short of outstanding, too.

But in the years since my last experience with the Roush formula, Ford’s own development team has churned out some pretty potent ‘Stangs. We currently live in a world where the Blue Oval will sell you a Mustang with 662 horsepower from the factory, and the recently departed Boss 302 remains one of the best Mustangs – and best sports coupes – the Autoblog crew has ever driven.

So with great-driving and hugely powerful Mustangs coming straight off the line at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant, does the Roush package still offer that extra special something to make it stand out? I spent a week with a Stage 3 coupe to find out.

Driving Notes

  • Within the Stage 3 model range, there are three different “phases” of engine tune that can be had. Our test car, in Phase 1 spec, adds a supercharger to the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V8, the end result being 575 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque. Plenty powerful, for sure, but if that’s not enough to get your motor running (pun totally intended), the Phase 2 kit will net you 625 horsepower and the Phase 3 option packs 675 horsepower. Take that, GT500.
  • One of the most notable characteristics of any Roush package is the exhaust treatment, and as you’d expect, it’s loud. Sorry – loud. Like, tough-to-hold-a-conversation-with-your-copilot loud. There’s a huge roar on startup, and the harder you mash the throttle in every gear, the more robust the noise. We love a tough-sounding Mustang, and in terms of getting noticed and letting folks know that this isn’t your ordinary factory Ford, the Roush treatment is a hilarious thrill. The sound does have a tendency to drone at highway speeds, but it’s a sweet note. Besides, the Mustang’s stock Shaker stereo is pretty horrible at higher volumes, anyway.
  • The big disappointment with the Roush package is the interior, where it feels like a few steps were missed in the customization process. The optional leather Roush-specific seats are nice and decently comfortable, but seriously lack lateral bolstering. Considering you can now get Recaro chairs on every engine configuration of the stock Mustang, these are a must-have for the more hardcore Roush tune. Our car featured the optional rear seat delete, replaced by a functional cross-brace, but that aside, it’s base Mustang GT spec in here. No upgraded stereo and no fussy MyFord Touch, though both can be had for an additional cost. We just miss any big feeling of exclusivity from the cabin.
  • Outside, it’s a different story. The Roush looks fantastic. We dig the visual enhancements like the hood scoop and vents, as well as the revised lower front fascia with pronounced foglamp housings. The added trim along the rocker panels is a nice touch, and while the side window louvers wreck visibility, they look nifty. The upgraded 20-inch wheels look good, too, wrapped in sticky Cooper RS3 275/35R20 tires.
  • With 575 hp and 505 lb-ft of twist on hand, there’s no denying that this Stage 3 Mustang is quick. Roush estimates that hitting 60 miles per hour will take just four seconds, and from behind the wheel, it feels every bit of that. However, even with supercharged thrust, power delivery is very linear, and the Roush is pretty easy to drive at slower speeds around town.
  • Roush has given the Stage 3 a full suite of suspension tuning, and the end result is something that’s far better able to put down all that power than, say, a GT500. But here, too, the car feels many steps away from being an all-out monster. The steering is still sort of vague, and the action of the six-speed manual shifter is rough when trying to quickly row between the gears. The cue ball shifter is cool, yes, but having a proper short-shift kit here would help things tremendously.
  • Larger StopTech brakes with red-painted calipers provide plenty of stopping power, and again, the upgraded suspension is welcome with the added thrust from the 5.0-liter V8, but in a sort of old-school fast-Mustang way – the on-road action still has all the precision of trying to cut tissue paper with a chainsaw. It’s vicious and fun, but it’s not even close to matching what the Boss can throw down.
  • And really, that’s how the Stage 3 Mustang left me feeling after my week behind the wheel: not as good as the Boss 302. The latter remains one of Ford’s best performance creations, and it will indeed be missed. But that’s not all bad for the Roush. Fact is, it’s better to drive than a GT500, even with a reduction of nearly 100 horsepower. (When do you actually need 662 hp, let alone 575, anyway?)
  • As-tested, however, the Stage 3 sits just above the $65,000 mark, which is over $10,000 more than the aforementioned GT500. (That’s $17,000 for the Roush package, over $10,000 in optional extras, and the $38,000 Mustang GT Premium donor car.) If you aren’t just power-hungry, the added cost can be justified by the added exclusivity of the Roush treatment, with a more ferocious exhaust note and unique styling, and the better suspension geometry that results in a more composed on-road demeanor, as well. Of course, there’s the added value of Roush being a full-on OEM, not just an aftermarket tuner bolting accessories onto Mustangs – everything found on this car was specifically designed for it. Really, the Stage 3 kit is just as awesome as it ever was. But these days, it’s just tough to beat what’s coming out of Ford’s own factory.

Report: Treasury needs GM stock to be worth $95.51 to break even

Special Inspector General Christy Romero has delivered another report to Congress on the state of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) up to June 6 of this year, assessing numbers to the US Treasury’s remaining stake in General Motors. After stock sales in February and another a few months later, the Fed is still the owner of 14 percent of GM, totaling 189 million shares, and is $18.1 billion in the hole after the $49.5 billion loan to the automaker. Although the share price has risen more than 20 percent this year to $37.08 at the time of writing, Romero’s latest calculations indicate it would need to climb to $95.51 for the government to be made whole. In May of this year that number was $70 per share.

GM stock is on the rise, but no one expects it to reach that number before the government’s self-imposed deadline for being divested of the stock. If sold right now, Treasury would make about $7 billion and wash its hands of the rest. Analysts expect GM’s stock to continue rising so that $7 billion number should also climb and the loss get trimmed, but even with another 25-percent gain between now and April, when the government is expected to be fully divested, that would only get it to $46 per share.

GM will be looking forward to next April, probably no matter where its stock price is, if for no other reason than to have ammunition removed from the “Government Motors” grousers. For now, it can point to the Center of Automotive Research study that declared everyone’s already been paid back plus interest, because “the cost of doing nothing was not zero.”

Burned VW Cross Polo with shotgun barrels

As car people, there’s a certain degree of delight that comes with watching an old James Bond movie and seeing Desmond Llewelyn describe the accoutrements of an MI6-modded Aston Martin or Lotus, all while saying, “Oh grow up, 007.” But in reality, a car with concealed firearms, a hallmark of Bond’s rides, is actually a terrifying prospect, as one Czech citizen found out.

The incident occurred in Johannesburg, South Africa, when Radovan Krejcir emerged from his Mercedes-Benz and started hearing popping sounds as he was walking into his pawn shop. A Volkswagen Cross Polo, parked directly across from where Krejcir regularly parks, opened fire with a dozen shotguns concealed behind the license plate, according to The Mirror. Ten rounds hit the driver’s side window, but the Czech national was clear of his vehicle by that point. After, the VW caught fire. Whether this was intentional in order to destroy evidence, or merely a result of placing 12 hot gun barrels in the back bumper of a car, remains to be seen.

This was not a random act of violence, though. The Associated Press reports that Krejcir is linked to the Johannesburg underground, and that he fled his home country after escaping a police raid in 2005. He popped up in South Africa in 2007 and has been the subject of extradition efforts by the Czech government ever since, who want him to serve an 11-year sentence for tax evasion.

Since arriving in SA, Krejcir has been charged with both robbery and insurance fraud, although charges were eventually dropped. It’s also been insinuated that he was involved in the murder of a strip club owner in 2010. Further proof that this isn’t you average sleezy pawn shop owner? He drives a matte black Mercedes-Benz CL-Class AMG that’s been bulletproofed. Head below for the full news report from South Africa’s Eyewitness News.

Official: Production of Shelby GT350 is coming to an end

Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Ford

One Autoblog staffer who drove the limited-edition Shelby GT350 wrote it probably was the best Mustang he’d driven, but, at some point, the fun had to come to an end: December 31 is the last day the GT350 will be available to order.

The GT350’s option list has evolved much like it did for the original 1965-67 GT350. For 2011, the 45th Anniversary edition only came in coupe form and was painted white with blue stripes, just as with the 1965 car. The 2012 GT350 was offered as a coupe or convertible, and three colors were added to the option list, just like the 1966 model. For 2013, more colors and options were added in addition to equipment and styling updates, which resulted in Wilwood instead of Baer brakes. No major changes were made for the 2014 model. From the first car in 2011, customers have been able to choose between three different configurations for their 5.0-liter V8: naturally aspirated with 440 horsepower, supercharged with 525 hp (with warranty) or supercharged with 624 hp (without warranty).

“When we unveiled this latest version of the Shelby GT350, we promised it would be built for a limited time to preserve its collectability and value,” states John Luft, president of Shelby American. He may have a point, because the original GT350, which also had a limited production run, is among the most valuable muscle cars in the world.

While the end of 2013 will mark the conclusion of a great modern-day muscle car, Shelby American wants us to remember one of the late Carroll Shelby’s favorite sayings: “Our favorite car is the next one we build.” That and the other vehicles in the company’s lineup, such as the GT500 Super Snake and Raptor, will continue to be offered for sale.

For more details on the GT350, scroll down for the press release.

Auctions: Chevy Camaro GS Racecar Concept to be auctioned in Monterey

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Chevrolet, Racing

2010 Chevy Camaro GS Racecar Concept - front three-quarter view

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro GS Racecar Concept, built for the SEMA show back in 2008 by Riley Technologies with assistance from GM’s High Performance Vehicle Operations, will be offered for sale at the Mecum Auctions during Monterey Car Week next month.

The prototype motorsports Camaro was painted to resemble Mark Donohue’s 1969 Camaro Trans-Am racecar, and it had a few performance modifications done to make it eligible to compete in Grand Am’s Koni Challenge GS class. The production Camaro body-in-white was seam welded, the fenders, doors, hood and trunk were replaced with carbon-fiber pieces, a three-inch exhaust system with aftermarket mufflers was swapped in and engine, transmission and differential oil coolers were added. The stock Chevrolet LS3 V8 was dropped onto solid engine mounts and paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox, with upgraded brakes completing the package.

Mecum Auctions estimates this track-oriented prototype will bring in between $110,000 and $200,000 at the auction block.

Detroit band Gentlemen Mutineers recording song inside a 2014 Chevy Impala - video screencap

When the Chevrolet Sonic came out, the YouTube-tastic band OK Go used it in a music video in which they drove the tiny hatch through a bunch of giant instruments to play their song Needing/Wanting. Two years later, the arrival of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala has got another band in a music-making mind, but this time it’s Detroit’s Gentlemen Mutineers recording their song Detroit Throttle inside the “library quiet” cabin of the sedan.

We could tell you more about it, but Chevrolet tells you all you want to know in the press release below. Besides, a municipal anthem should be allowed to speak for itself, so you can watch it in the video below.

Toyota begins testing Segway-like Winglet in Japan [w/video]

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Transportation Alternatives, Toyota, On Two Wheels, Japan

Toyota has just now started testing a two-wheeled Segway-like vehicle that it first trumpeted almost five years ago, but when the vehicle in question tops out at less then four miles per hour, these things do take time. Toyota’s Winglet, which the Japanese automaker first announced to the world in August 2008, has started public trials on the streets of Tsukuba, Japan, as the company looks to get more information on the stand-up vehicles safety and maneuverability.

The Winglet, Toyota says, is an illustration of the “development of a society where mobility is safe, freely accessible, and fun.” Tsukuba, which is 40 miles northeast of Tokyo (or, theoretically, about 12 hours by Winglet), is apropos because of its position as an “environmental model city.” The vehicle, which is said to have a single-charge range of about six miles and can be recharged in about an hour, is being tested on public sidewalks. So watch out, brave citizens of Tsukuba.

Meanwhile, read Toyota’s press release and check out footage of them in full flight by scrolling below.
