Spy Shots: Watch this Nissan GT-R Nismo attack the ‘Ring

Nissan GT-R Nismo spy video

Following yesterday’s spy photos of the Nissan GT-R Nismo at the Nürburgring, we’ve been informed that some intrepid spies have captured video of Super Godzilla lapping the track. We aren’t sure which turn the first clip is showing, but the second and third are almost certainly the tough right-hander known as Bergwerk.

Like the current GT-R, the Nismo, even with what might be a new exhaust system, isn’t a vehicle that sounds particularly good in a flyby. It’s more of just an intense whooshing noise. Take a look at the full video from RSR Nürburgring down below.

Followup: Stolen first production Volvo P1800 recovered

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Etc., Europe, Government/Legal, Volvo

Volvo P1800 - chassis number two - front three-quarter view

Late last month, we told you about a 1961 Volvo P1800 that had been stolen in Sweden. The thought of losing a classic coupe to an unscrupulous thief is troubling enough, but this wasn’t just any P1800 – it was the very first production example minted, and the restored red-over-white two-door was owned by the vice president of the Swedish P1800 Club to boot. Chassis Number Two was pilfered from a Stockholm lockup on either August 21 or 22, and the theft triggered an international hunt of sorts.

Fortunately, that hunt has come to a (mostly) happy ending. According to Larmtjänst AB, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting vehicle crime in Sweden, the car was spotted by someone who had read about the missing classic. The P1800 was recovered in Hägerstensvägen, a municipality of Stockholm, after being found abandoned on the road covered with a tarp. The owner is reportedly very relieved that his Volvo is mostly intact, marred only by a broken ignition and a dirty interior.

August 2013: Sizzling Summer Edition

Filed under: Car Buying, By the Numbers

Honda, Toyota And Nissan Make Big Gains, Domestics Not Far Off

By the Numbers cutout art

The summer sales season came to a close last month with all of the major auto companies we follow posting double-digit sales increases in August. Smaller companies with multiple brands like Jaguar-Land Rover, which was up a relatively impressive 40 percent, are at the top of the list, but companies that sell in much larger volumes were right behind.

Japanese automakers led the way with Honda/Acura climbing 26.7 percent, Toyota/Lexus up 22.8 percent and Nissan/Infiniti increasing 22.3 percent. US domestic automakers, however, had an August to celebrate as well, with General Motors gaining 14.7 percent, Ford and Lincoln up 12.2 percent and all of Chrysler (including Fiat) up 11.5 percent.

August was a month of records, as well, with Subaru, a perennial hot-selling brand on our table, beating its old all-time sales record in the US with 41,061 units sold last month – an increase of 45.1 percent versus last year. Hyundai, up 8.2 percent, set an all-time sales record for August, as did Honda and Kia. Maserati had its best month ever in the US, and Mazda had its best August in 10 years. Even Toyota reported achieving its best month of sales in more than five years.

Check all of last month’s sales figures in the chart below.

*Brands and companies are displayed in descending order according to their percentage change in volume sales. There were 28 selling days in August 2013 and 27 selling days in August 2012, so there is a difference between the change in monthly sales volume and the change in average daily sales rate (DSR) for each brand/company. Also, brands are combined and reported as companies only if their sales figures are released jointly.

Official: 2014 Scion FR-S gets price increase, knee cushions [w/video]

Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Scion

2013 Scion FR-S - front three-quarter view

There’s not a lot of breathing room between the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ – the two rear-drive coupes are about as close to badge-engineered as the auto industry gets in this day and age. In this case, that’s not a terrible thing, though, since they’re both so engaging to drive, but it does make for interesting comparisons when it comes to pricing and model year updates.

Late last month, Subaru announced pricing for its 2014 BRZ, which didn’t get much more than the inclusion of Aha internet radio compatibility and a $25,595 starting price – just $100 more than the 2013 model’s MSRP. A modest $25 increase in destination charges ($795) means that it starts at $26,390. For its part, Scion will ask $24,600 for a base 2014 FRS, plus $755 for delivery, for a total of $25,355. That means the Subaru is more still expensive, but it has more available equipment as well.

The 2014 Scion FR-S isn’t getting many tweaks, but a couple of small changes – knee pads on both the transmission tunnel and the door panels around the speaker grilles and a new standard 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system – are appreciated. (Note: 2013 model shown above).

If you’ve ever wondered what each and every little difference is between the two models, Driving Vancouver has an excellent new video that shows off all of the (2013) differences, right down to the trunk liners. Check it out by scrolling below.
