Followup: Range Rover Evoque convertible reportedly gets go-ahead after all

Filed under: Convertible, SUV, Land Rover, Luxury

Despite a report earlier this year stating that a production version of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible was shot down, there have been signs suggesting otherwise recently. Last week, we heard that the fate of this two-door, drop-top SUV could be decided upon soon, but WhatCar? says that the decision has already been made.

Quoting an insider, the article states that the Evoque Convertible has been given a green light for production with the first units being built next year. WhatCar? also says that no structural modifications are necessary for the removal of the roof, which could lessen the development time and cost of the vehicle.

As there are really no luxury SUV convertibles with which to compete against, Land Rover seems to be expecting the Evoque Convertible to rival convertibles such as the Audi TT and BMW 4 Series. We’re a bit dubious, but time will tell.

Report: Detroit pins hopes to bankruptcy as Motor City sags

Detroit from the air

Detroit. The Motor City. Motown. Hitsville, USA. Hockeytown. The largest municipality ever to file for bankruptcy in US history. You can add that last one to Detroit’s many titles, as Republican Governor Rick Snyder authorized emergency manager Kevyn Orr to file a petition for bankruptcy yesterday.

Detroit’s Chapter 9 bankruptcy bid is likely to be very bad news for city employees, retirees and their families, but what does it mean for the auto industry? Automotive News spoke with Wall Street financial guru Steven Rattner, the same man that acted as President Barack Obama’s so-called auto czar, ushering General Motors and Chrysler through bankruptcies of their own, to see what parallels there will be between the two situations.

According to Rattner, bankruptcy for the city was inevitable, just like it was for GM and Chrysler. “It’s analogous to the auto companies, in that you have too many stakeholders whose claims are too underwater to realistically ever worked this out with some kind of bankruptcy,” Rattner told AN. But, Rattner cautions, “This will be much messier.” The auto bankruptcies took a brief six weeks, while the city’s case will likely last at least a few months, if not a year or more.

While the automaker presence in the city isn’t what it once was, GM still employs roughly 3,000 people at its Renaissance Center headquarters, right in the heart of downtown. Chrysler’s Detroit workforce is mainly blue collar, at the Jefferson North factory, which builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. Ford, the only automaker not to go through bankruptcy, has limited its presence within Detroit city limits.

In a statement, GM said its “is proud to call Detroit home and today’s bankruptcy declaration is a day that we and others hoped would not come. We believe, however, that today also can mark a clean start for the city.” Ford shared a similar sentiment, with a release stating “The city has a difficult job ahead, and we are optimistic that governmental leaders will be successful in strengthening the community.” Chrysler, meanwhile, reiterated its commitment to the city, “We not only continue to invest in the city and its residents by adding to our presence in Detroit, we also are committed to playing a positive role in its revitalization.”

Spy Shots: 2014 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible caught naked in the wild

2014 Chevy Camaro SS Convertible spy shot - top up - silver

While we had our first genuine look at the 2014 Camaro SS back at the New York Auto Show this spring, we hadn’t yet gotten a glimpse of the droptop version of the pony car, until now.

Nabbed near Chevy’s home turf in beautiful Milford, MI, the ’14 Camaro SS Convertible looks ready for prime time as-is. We’ll be honest: From the shoulder-line up, this new Camaro looks almost identical to the outgoing car, with no apparent changes to the folding soft top or rakish A-pillars. Below the waist, the convertible shares the revised front hood, nose and revamped rear treatment with the SS coupe.

This particular SS Convertible is wearing a new set of 20-inch five spoke wheels, as well as a beefy quad exhaust setup out back. Sharp-eyed readers will also notice that the Chevy test driver isn’t terribly pleased with getting his picture taken. Gentle souls should avert their eyes for images four and five of our gallery…

Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock get pulled over by police officer in Lamborghini Miura - video screencap

Jerry Seinfeld has featured many beautiful cars and hilarious comedians in his Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee web series, but this latest episode might top them all. (To his credit, it feels like we’ve been saying that a lot lately). In this video, Seinfeld snags the keys to a 1969 Lamborghini Miura and picks up funnyman Chris Rock.

Not surprisingly, Seinfeld says the Miura is “the most beautiful car ever designed,” and he shows how fast it can be, too. After stopping for lunch and a conversation with Rock, Seinfeld gets an unexpected chat with one of New Jersey’s Finest. There are plenty of laughs, but the Lamborghini and its long eyelashes steal the light in this episode. Check it out below.

Video: See why one man’s passion for Porsche’s 911 is a German thing

Restorer John Willhoit's Porsche 911 gets the Petrolicious video treatment - screencap

You’ll often hear Porsche 911 owners say the same thing about how they ended up buying one: They could never forget the feeling they experienced during their first ride. Top-flight Porsche restorer John Willhoit will comment on how the rear-engine layout gives the 911 its unique handling and plenty of room in the interior, but he’ll also tell you that, after his first ride in one, he was hooked.

Willhoit’s 1971 Pastel Blue 911T wasn’t his first Porsche; it was a one-owner basketcase parked outside his sister’s neighbor’s garage when he found it 20 years ago. Rain water had been draining onto and into it for years, so it was clear to him when he saw it in person that it would be a labor of love to bring it back to life. Of all the things we would expect in a restoration done to this level, it would be a paint job, but, amazingly, the paint is original! Everything else, however, isn’t.

Scroll below to watch this new video from Petrolicious, where you’ll find out what Willhoit did to restore his personal 911 hotrod and stuff 300 horsepower into it. Just don’t think he’ll do the same for your Porsche – unless you don’t mind waiting a year to get your car into his shop and have a cool $300,000 to spend on the restoration. Enjoy!

ETC: Holy crime-fighting Ford F-150, Batman!

Ford F-150 Crime Fighting Bat Truck

What would Batman drive for his weekly trips to Home Depot for the bits and pieces needed to keep his lair deep below Wayne Manor in tip-top condition? Certainly not the Batmobile – there’s no way a 4×8 sheet of plywood will fit between the wheel wells, not to mention the fact that jet turbine engines have an unfortunate tendency to set trailers on fire when towing…

No, what Batman needs is a pickup truck. The boys from Ford teamed up with Galpin Auto Sports to build just such a machine, and it has just debuted at Comic Con. Designed by Jared Barris, grandson of the legendary kustomizer George Barris, the 2012 F-150 pickup you see here, dubbed Crime Fighter, is painted Tuxedo Black with Ferrari Red highlights and is affixed with fins on each side of the truck bed. It’s nothing if not unique.

Well, it’s at least unique for now. According to Ford, Galpin in Southern California is willing to take orders for customers looking to don a cape and hit the town for a night of crime-fighting action. Or trips to Home Depot. Check out our high-res image gallery and then scroll down for the official description from Ford. We’re waiting for details such as pricing and build time from Ford, and we’ll update this post if and when we hear back.

Report: Saab US bankruptcy plan gets legal green-light

Saab

It feels utterly bizarre that we’re still talking about Saab, but Reuters is reporting that the bankrupt Swedish manufacturer’s American arm has gotten approval from the US Bankruptcy Court to liquidate its assets and pay back creditors. As part of the plan, secured creditors like Ally Financial will receive full repayment. Unsecured creditors, consisting of those affected by abandoned leases and contracts will get anywhere from 25 to 82 percent of their money back.

There are currently $77 million in unsecured claims, according to Reuters, but that number doesn’t include claims from former Saab dealers. Naturally, the entire affair is full of lawyers and legalese. A trust formed on the Saab side will be negotiating with creditors and their affiliates in an attempt to reduce claims against Saab. This sounds like the start of a long and sordid affair…

Video: Chevy ad compares Spark EV with Ferrari 458 Italia

Filed under: Budget, Technology, Videos, Hatchback, Chevrolet, Specialty, Electric

2014 Chevy Spark EV - front three-quarter view

Chevrolet’s new commercial for the 2014 Spark EV emphasizes the little hatchback’s performance over pretty much everything else, and it even goes as far as to compare it to a Ferrari 458 Italia. That’s right, the electric bubble is pitched in the commercial as having a higher torque figure than the Ferrari – and it does, with a massive 400 pound-feet ready to be unleashed.

That doesn’t translate into a quicker car, however, as the 458’s V8 with 570 horsepower and not-exactly-quaint 398 lb-ft gives it a 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds compared to the Spark EV’s 7.6-second run.

“We think the fun-to-drive element is an area for us to differentiate ourselves,” Sam Basile, executive chief engineer for GM’s global minicars and emerging-market vehicles, told Automotive News.

EV makers who aren’t Tesla might want to take note of the Chevrolet ad, because, as the novelty of clean electric propulsion wears off, the Spark EV has planted something else in our minds: quick electric propulsion for the masses. That is, if its sales weren’t limited to California and Oregon.

Watch Chevy’s refreshing commercial below.

Report: Chevy delays next Cruze until 2015

2016 Chevy Cruze - front three-quarter view

The Chevrolet Cruze has proven to be a popular global car for General Motors. So popular, in fact, that the General is in no rush to replace the compact and is using the opportunity to build more engineering changes into the car’s design. Originally, we were expecting the next-gen Cruze to debut late next year for the 2015 model year, but according to Reuters, Chevrolet has pushed this timetable back by about a year. With the new Cruze now set to go on sale in December of 2015, it will likely carry a 2016 model year designation.

Other than riding on GM’s new D2XX platform, we have had little intel about the next-gen Cruze, so we have no clue what changes are being made to the car. What does seem evident is that Chevy is looking to prevent the Cruze launch from suffering the same kind of flop as the 2013 Malibu, which required emergency updates just one year after its launch. As the article points out, the Cruze has helped spur GM’s post-bankruptcy turnaround, and by the 2014 model year, it will be the oldest car in its US portfolio.

Report: Akerson calls for GM tech to stymie Tesla

Filed under: Hybrid, Technology, GM, Tesla, Electric

Electric vehicle maker Tesla has had some good days lately as sales of the Model S have exceeded expectations as much as the company’s profits, thanks in no small part to innovative thinking that has resulted in mass sales of ZEV credits to other manufacturers, free charging stations, 90-second battery swaps and manufacturer-owned dealerships. All of this has the attention of General Motors, who views Tesla as a disruptive force to the auto industry and as a threat to the 104-year-old automaker.

Case in point: GM recognizes that Tesla must be doing something right if it can sell more of its $69,900 Model S sedans than the $39,145 Volt. So what is GM doing about it? Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson assigned a small team to study Tesla so the company won’t be caught off guard in the future. In an interview with Bloomberg, Steve Girsky, GM vice chairman, said, “History is littered with big companies that ignored innovation that was coming their way because you didn’t know where you could be disrupted.”

GM was one of those big companies at one point, and it hasn’t quite broken that mold. It has struggled to move on from the old, inefficient practices of its past, leading Akerson to chide employees at a recent conference in Houston because so many in-house patents had failed to be commercialized and implemented in GM designs. This, of course, resulted in a huge research-and-development budget that was wasteful. But Akerson knows that GM must rely on innovation and a tight focus on technologies that customers want if it is to be profitable and survive in the long term.

Ultimately, it seems GM is looking at Tesla to help establish a healthy culture of innovation, as the company is stinging from the success of the Model S. But at least it’s looking at a glass that’s half full.
