Filed under: Videos, Hatchback, Peugeot, Racing

In preparation for the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb being held later this month, Sébastien Loeb is getting in his first testing sessions of his Red Bull-sponsored Peugeot 208 T16 racecar. Marking its return to Pikes Peak for the first time in 14 years, Peugeot has released an exciting video that provides a look into the background behind this effort, as well as our first look at the car in its race-ready Red Bull livery.

Loeb, a Pikes Peak rookie, will be driving this specially modified 208 T16 in the Unlimited class with an 875-horsepower, twin-turbo V6 mounted in the rear. The video gives us an excellent perspective as the racecar rockets up the hill, and we all get to hear the powerful engine in action. Scroll down to watch this video, and we’ll have more coverage of the race in a couple of weeks.

Official: Holden launches tuned, pre-facelifted Malibu in Australia

Filed under: Sedan, GM, Holden, Australia

As General Motors prepares to launch a refreshed 2014 Chevrolet Malibu in the US, the current, year-old version of the car will go on sale in Australia as the Holden Malibu. Rather than just making it right-hand drive and putting new badges on the Malibu for Aussie duty, Holden engineers worked on the sedan’s drivetrain and suspension to give it a tuning unique to that market.

It seems like one of the biggest challenges was getting the Holden Malibu to drive smoothly on Australian roads, and GM’s crew Down Under accomplished this by retuning the suspension’s damping calibration, as well as giving the car proper right-hand-drive tires. Yes, apparently tires designed for a left-hand-drive car would cause the Malibu to pull “excessively to the left,” according to GM’s press release. Engine choices for the Holden Malibu are the 2.4-liter gasoline four-cylinder or a 2.0-liter diesel I4.

Scroll down for the official press blast.

Official: Bentley releases new details on Continental GT3 racer

Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Bentley, Racing

Porsche’s new LMP1 Prototype isn’t the only motorsports news coming out of Volkswagen AG this week. After unveiling its new Continental GT3 at the Paris Motor Show last year, Bentley has released some new images and details as this racecar continues its development. Similar to the Porsche announcement, Bentley’s new GT3 marks a significant return to motorsports, only in this case, Bentley hasn’t raced a car since 2003 – a winning effort at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

From street to race form, the Continental has dropped about 2,200 pounds by shedding many of the luxury and tech features that make the street-legal Continental GT the car that it is – including 50(!) electronic control units. The Continental GT3 uses the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 as the road car, but we’re guessing output has been tweaked a bit from the standard 500 horsepower. Except for the carbon fiber hood, decklid and doors, Bentley says that the body of the GT3 is a direct carryover from the Continental GT.

Inside, even a stripped interior and full roll cage won’t stop Bentley from being Bentley as it gives this racecar the same attention to detail as its road cars – the seats, steering wheel and door pulls all receiving the hand-crafted treatment from the factory in Crewe. There is no word as to when the Continental GT3 will make its racing debut, but more details about the car can be found below in the official press release.

Review: Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic

Memoirs of a Hack MechanicWhen you self-identify as a hack, that means you’re proud of it, and Rob Siegel is proud of being a hack. He even has rules for what makes “a good kludge,” which he delineates in his book, Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic. Rob Siegel, you see, isn’t just a backyard wrench-twirler. His column, The Hack Mechanic, has been a fixture in the BMW Car Club of America’s official magazine, Roundel, for decades. Now, Bentley Publishers has given Siegel a wider platform for musing about cars, while really not talking as much about cars as you’d think.

Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic bills itself as “a memoir with actual useful stuff” – an apt description. It’s not a how-to manual for fixing your car, and it may be more helpful keeping your life in balance than it is with carburetor balancing. That’s no bad thing, and Siegel himself explains how classic manuals like John Muir’s How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive and books like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Shop Class as Soulcraft serve more like manuals for self-discovery than fix-it books.

The tone and Zen-seeking flavor of those books makes Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic an easy read that often makes you chuckle (because you’ve been there) or marvel at the clever solution to a potential landmine of a repair (“cascading failure” is Siegel’s apt descriptor). Talking about the process of auto repair not from the “put-tab-B-into-slot-A” perspective, but from the “stand back and look at the big picture” point of view that the book takes is due, in part, to the author’s day job as an engineer. It’s good advice, and it’s why the book has appeal beyond fans of Neue Klasse Roundies.

The actual useful stuff is exactly that, especially the section that covers tools and shop procedures. Knowing the right kind of equipment to buy, where to spend the money, and where you can find bargains is key to getting the job done in an at least somewhat enjoyable fashion, and that’s all well-covered by the book. Another nugget of gold is a detailed section of repairing air conditioning systems, because without AC, your summer enjoyment season with a car lasts about five weeks until it’s too sweltering to use, forcing you back to your Corolla. And nobody wants that.

Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic is a book that will feel right at home next to your spiral-bound How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, and it’s written with a breezy, conversational tone that lets you get to know the author even if you haven’t been reading Roundel for 25 years. It’s less a car manual than it is a how-to guide for living with this particular addiction, from buying to keeping to selling cars that entertain you, and that’s why it’s a worthwhile addition to your library.

Like just about every other automaker on the planet, Cadillac is looking to stake out a larger claim of the Chinese automotive industry. Right now, the brand is viewed as somewhat downmarket from rivals that many in the U.S. see as being on equal ground.

Perhaps, then, Cadillac will look to try something new. In a new short film for the Chinese-market SRX, Cadillac attempts to bridge East with West via Route 66. The ad shows actress and singer-songwriter Karen Mok taking on Will Rogers Highway with a male friend. The Mother Road calls, romance blooms and the Cadillac SRX is the tool that unites the pair. Click past the jump to view the spot.

Video: A woman shows you how to build a proper circle track racer

Jeri Ellsworth

Jeri Ellsworth on building a race car – Click above to view video after the jump

Jeri Ellsworth is a certified renaissance woman. A high school and college dropout, she’s a self-taught computer programmer and an ace welder and circle track race car builder. She has also started her own race car building business while her peers were at prom and went on to open a chain of computer shops.

More recently, Ellsworth has taken to YouTube to show aspiring NASCAR-types how a street stock racer should be built. Ellsworth is extremely careful and meticulous, knocking out some seriously pretty welds on her way to completing a 1981 Chevrolet Camaro racer.

Her work (and plumber’s crack), looks to be enough to impress embarrass all of her male peers, both in the garage and on the race track. To check out Ellsworth’s skill, hit up the video after the jump. It’s the first in a series, so if you like what you see, we urge to watch ’em all.

Report: Mulally urges Capitol Hill to adopt national fuel standard

ford ceo alan mulally

Will there be one fuel standard to rule them all? Ford CEO Alan Mulally certainly hopes so, and he’s letting Washington know. As manufacturers spend time and money pushing to reach established Corporate Average Fuel Economy goals, some states are looking to set their own rules. That could prove to be a tricky – and hugely expensive – proposition for the automakers.

We know we said “some states,” but you all know the one we’re talking about. California is (once again) considering the idea of setting its own average fuel economy rules starting in 2017, and the federal government is (once again) considering letting them. Currently, California and the federal government agree that fleet-wide fuel efficiency will be required to hit 34.1 miles per gallon starting in 2012, a figure that runs through 2016.

As part of a visit to D.C. this week, Mulally told House members and Bill Daley, White House Chief of Staff (among others), that he wants the government to step up and standardize fuel economy and emissions rules, which would prevent states from breaking out their own guidelines.

To celebrate its tenth anniversary in the ever-hungry, ever-growing Chinese market, Porsche is unleashing a special edition version of its 911 Turbo S. The car comes with the Turbo S’ 530-horsepower, twin-turbo flat-six, mated to Porsche’s PDK sequential gearbox.

Rather than go crazy with mechanical mods, Porsche is sticking with an appearance package for the commemorative 911. Outside, there’s special Gold Bronze Metallic paint set off with flat black and carbon fiber accents. The car rides on sexy black 19-inch Fuchs-style alloys borrowed from the 911 Sport Classic.

Inside, customers get a gold commemorative plaque, and all the Alcantara you could ever want. Porsche sets off the acres of black fabric with contrasting gold stitching.

If you want one, you’re pretty much out of luck. Porsche is only going to build 10 examples, and they’re all going to China.

Report: Bentley Mulsanne stretches out thanks to ArmorTech Motors

Filed under: Aftermarket, Sedan, Europe, Bentley, Specialty, Luxury

2011 Bentley Mulsanne ArmorTech

2011 ArmorTech Bentley Mulsanne – Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2011 Bentley Mulsanne is officially ready for use by warlords and dictators the world over. Thanks to the work of ArmorTech Motors, the world’s tyrants can safely roll over crowds of protesters and the odd land mine swaddled in the comfort of Connolly leather and a high-def entertainment system.

ArmorTech will stretch your Mulsanne a minimum of 20 inches, and refinish the interior with all the bespoke touches your heart desires, including a top-shelf entertainment system and passenger compartment divider wall. If a 20-inch stretch won’t cut it, ArmorTech will be happy to stretch the big Bentley a mind-boggling 45 inches.

Armor plating is an optional extra, so if you don’t expect to encounter a hail of bullets any time soon, you can opt not to have the extra poundage tacked on. In any case, with the appropriate application of funds, you can distance yourself even further from the Great Unwashed – and those who opted for the plebeian standard Mulsanne.
