Teased: Subaru BRZ STI teasers added to Japanese website

Subaru BRZ STI teaser image

Subaru BRZ STI teaser imageComing Soon. With those two words, Subaru has officially dropped a confirmation bomb on our expectations for a higher performance version of the much-loved BRZ coupe, known, of course, as the Subaru BRZ STI. Two teaser images are being shown on the Japanese web-side home of STI along with the promise of ‘coming soon,’ and there’s also a rather lovely looking set of twisty roads with the words ‘Purity of Handling.’

There’s not much we can glean from the two teaser images, but we’re expecting an aggressive body package to go along with a significant increase in horsepower from the BRZ STI. We’re also not totally clear on what ‘coming soon’ really means – the auto show season will be kicking off in full swing this fall, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a debut in Los Angeles. That said, you’ll know more just as soon as we do.

Autowriters Aaron Robinson and Ezra Dyer added to The Car Show on SPEED

SPEED is betting big on its newest TV series, called The Car Show. You’re most likely already aware that the program will be hosted by Adam Carolla, Dan Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley. Now, SPEED has announced that some well-known auto scribes are joining the team to pitch in on writing duty.

Aaron Robinson and Ezra Dyer have become a part of The Car Show family. Robinson is the Technical Editor at Car and Driver, while Dyer has written for a handful of publications and has a running column at Automobile. The two will add their automotive knowledge and insight to a team that already knows a good deal about cars. Well, we’re sure of everyone except Salley. The Spider owns four NBA championship rings, was a member of the Chicago Bulls record-breaking 72-win season, and wasn’t terrible in the film Eddie. None of that translates to cars, but we’re hoping the writers stay away from attempting to squeeze his six-foot, 11-inch frame into a Mazda Miata.

Honda fans in the UK can sink their teeth into a special edition of the Civic five-door, with new design elements inspired by the British Touring Car Championship series. The Honda Civic Ti package is available on both the 1.4- and 1.8-liter i-VTEC Civic SE models. Honda will only produce 500 examples of the Civic Ti, with the first cars going on sale in March.

The Civic Ti is a looks package only; there are no performance enhancements. Outside, there’s a GP body kit that includes spoilers at both the front and rear, side skirt inserts and rear body skirts. Premium White Pearl is the only Ti paint color, and it nicely contrasts the 17-inch Pro-Race matte-black wheels from Honda’s BTTC racing partner, Team Dynamics, .

Inside, the Civic Ti gets a standard Pioneer navigation/multimedia system, with iPod/USB connectivity and hands-free calling. (Pioneer is Honda’s main sponsor in the 2011 BTCC series.)

Pricing starts at £15,995 for the 1.4-liter Civic Ti and £16,995 for the 1.8 ($25,985 and $27,612, respectively, based on current exchange rates). Follow the jump for Honda’s official press release.

Small car or CUV could be added to Volkswagen plant

2011 Volkswagen NMS Sketch – Click above to enlarge

It’s no secret that Volkswagen has ambitious plans for the U.S. market over the next decade. The German automaker has its sights set on a combined one million sales per year (made up of 800,000 VWs and 200,000 Audi vehicles, give or take) by the year 2018. That’s three times as many vehicles as the company sold last year.

Of course, selling more cars in the U.S. means building more cars in North America. Hence VW’s billion dollar investment in a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the automaker will build the upcoming “New Midsize Sedan” specifically for the American market.

Put down your Little Debbie snack cakes, job seekers – a report from Autoweek suggests that VW has plans in the works to build another vehicle in Tennessee. While we had previously heard that the second model may be an Audi, it now seems as if it may be a VW-badged small car of CUV. The report also indicates that an engine plant may go up alongside the new facility to build engines for North America.

In any case, the value of the U.S. dollar as compared to the euro is likely to have a large impact on whatever decision is finally made.

Report: Post-bankruptcy GM has added nearly 7,000 jobs

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that General Motors has added a total of 6,900 jobs since the automaker emerged from bankruptcy in 2009. The news came out of a radio interview with Steve Girsky, GM vice president. Girsky said that a portion of that figure is made up of workers who were originally laid off as part of the restructuring process and then later recalled as manufacturing picked back up. Of the nearly 7,000 jobs, 1,100 are situated in Michigan. GM has recently increased its workforce at its Delta Township and Brownstown Township facilities, amongst others.

The company has also hired around 2,800 workers at its Canadian operations as well. GM is set to release its financial statement for the most recent business quarter later this month, and Girsky says that the numbers continue to demonstrate a company on the mend. Last quarter, the company posted a $865 million profit.

While the addition of nearly 7,000 jobs is a good milestone for GM, it’s important to bear in mind that the figure marks a little more than a sixth of the workers laid off during restructuring.
