Paul EisensteinEven growing up in New York City barely prepares you for the sprawling metropolis that is Seoul, South Korea. Spend a few days wandering the increasingly affluent town and you’ll be hard-pressed to miss the many coffee shops, seemingly at least one on every block. Seoul is a highly caffeinated city, a Seattle on overdrive, and for good reason. Its people seemingly never sleep. Workers in few countries clock more hours on the job.

“We are a driven people,” suggests Hyun-Soon Lee, vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Co. And while he hesitates when I ask what it is that drives the Koreans so much, he admits that, more than anything, it is the need to show they are the equals of the Japanese, who brutally occupied the country for so much of the last century.

Straddling the Han River, the capital city has come a long way since I first visited the so-called Land of the Morning Calm more than a quarter century ago. Back then the wounds from the Korean War were readily apparent in a town that was just beginning to claw its way out of the Third World, its streets largely populated by bicycles, scooters and a small but fast-growing number of primitive Hyundai Pony sedans.

These days, Seoul is a thriving city that is climbing ever skyward, its builders nearly as busy as those in Shanghai and Beijing. And the densely packed streets are overflowing with automobiles, a surprising share of them highline products from Europe, Japan and, of course, Korea, where the country’s carmakers are making a rapid push into the luxury market.

Autoblog visits the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic at the Mullin Museum

1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic In Detail – Click above for high-res image gallery

My first time going to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was back in 2003. There were some incredible classic cars on the 18th fairway, with Ford celebrating its 100th anniversary and Bugatti as the featured marque. In the multitude of millions of dollars worth of cars, though, there was one car that stood out from all the others – Peter Williamson’s 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. Despite my complete lack of knowledge of pre-war cars at the time, even I could recognize that the car had a presence about it that no other vehicle at the show could boast. My intuition was right, and the Bugatti eventually went on to win the coveted Best of Show award that year.

The Bugatti made the news again earlier this year when Gooding & Company announced it had sold the car to an unnamed buyer in the range of a record $30-$40 million. Soon after, it was announced that the car would be on display at the recently-opened Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA. Since I’m always looking for an excuse for the museum to let me look at their incredible collection of cars, I called them up and convinced them to let me have a look.

After an hour of inspecting and photographing every inch of the car, I’m declaring the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic worthy of its title as the world’s most expensive car. Hit the jump for my top ten reasons why.

Chevrolet Suburban celebrates 75 years, Autoblog drives every generation

Chevorlet Suburban 75th Anniversary

Chevrolet Suburban 75th Anniversary Event – Click above for high-res image gallery

Quick, what’s the longest-running nameplate in the car business?

If you said Honda Civic, you deserve to be smacked upside the head with a four-inch exhaust tip – it’s merely 37 model years old. The vehicle we’re talking about is positively prehistoric by comparison. The Porsche 911? Wrong again, as it only predates the Civic by a decade. You’re getting closer if you said the Ford F-Series, but still, FoMoCo didn’t launch its best-selling pickup until 1948.

You’ve got to go all the way back to 1935 for the launch of the auto industry’s Methuselah, the Chevrolet Suburban. That makes 2010 the 75th anniversary of the full-size SUV archetype. To celebrate, Chevy opened its vault on one of the Dog Days of August to let journalists drive a handful of vintage models.

It was something of a belated party, as GM stopped building 2010 model year Suburbans in June, including the special Diamond Edition model. But we’re not going to complain about being given the opportunity to get seat time in eight of the ten historic “Caryall” generations. Model years 1936, 1946, 1951, 1966, 1972, 1990, 1999 and 2002 were on hand, most thanks to GM’s Heritage Center.

We decided that the only proper way to approach the task was to drive back in history. This served well to highlight not just how much the Suburban has changed in recent model years, but how much the auto industry has evolved since the pre-war era. But it also showed how consistent the Suburban has been over all these years, offering eight-passenger capability in a roomy wagon body mounted on a heavy truck frame since its inception. History has shown this formula’s a winner; Chevy estimates it has built between 2.25-2.4 million Suburbans in total.

Follow the jump for a taste of our experience driving the Suburban back in time to its beginning.

2011 Ford Fiesta gets IIHS Top Safety Pick – Click above to watch video after the jump

We have mountains of respect for the men and women who work at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. After being invited to the institute’s Charlottesville, Virginia facility for a front-row seat to the 2011 Ford Fiesta’s frontal-offset test, we can honestly say that if we had their job, we’d have a hard time getting into just any old car ever again. While the Blue Oval’s new sub-compact passed its battery of evaluations with flying colors (being the first and only minicar to earn a Top Safety Pick nod since the institute added a rollover test), we were also treated to a tour of some of the more poorly engineered models from the recent past.

Manufacturers have made an impressive amount progress on the safety front in the last decade, thanks largely to a close partnership with the IIHS. The institute has worked to revise crash tests to more accurately reflect the composition of vehicles on the road. One of its primary functions is to identify crashes where people die in otherwise well-rated vehicles and to adjust crash tests accordingly. While the public identifies the institute with bouncing perfectly good cars off of chunks of aluminum and concrete, the truth is that crash testing is only a small part of the IIHS mission. Of course, it’s also the most fun part. Follow the jump to take a look at a video of the Fiesta’s frontal-offset test.

2010 Woodward Dream Cruise: Autoblog’s Livestream starts Saturday, 10AM EST

Woodward Dream Cruise

1.5 million people. 40,000 cars. 16 miles of famous Woodward Ave. It’s that time of year again to cover our favorite event near the city of Detroit (we love the Detroit Auto Show, but c’mon, it happens in the dead of winter): the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Like years prior, we’ll be on-hand for the official cruise day tomorrow, though Detroiters have had their classic cars out on Woodward Ave. all week before the thousands of classic car gawkers show up on Saturday and slow things down to idle on the street.

In a nutshell, you can expect Autoblog to make you feel like you’re there even if you choose not to make the trek to D-town.

We’ll be covering the 2010 Woodward Dream Cruise on three fronts:

  1. Livestream: Come to Autoblog.com at 10AM EST on Saturday to watch the cruise all day via livestreaming. Our setup this year is the best it’s ever been.
  2. Twitter/Facebook: Follow therealautoblog on Twitter and Like the Autoblog Facebook page for cool car tweets and updates throughout the entire day.
  3. Galleries: Like always, we’ll bring you plenty of high-res image galleries of the best cars cruising on Woodward. And we’ve made a promise to ourselves this year to label each and every image so you know what you’re looking at.

Make sure to check us out this weekend so you don’t miss a minute of coverage!
