23rd Nissan Z Car Convention – Click above for high-res image gallery

The Nissan North America headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee played host to the 23rd Annual Z Car Convention this past weekend. While we missed out on Friday’s autocross and drift challenge action, we were on hand Saturday morning for the car show. Owners from around the country rolled out their pieces of Z history, from the 240Z to the 370Z. Nissan itself pulled a few heritage models out of the mothballs and parked them on the lawn for all to enjoy. Talk about tasty.

There were even a handful of vintage machines with nary a Z or Fairlady badge in their bloodline on display as well. We were particularly smitten with the blue Patrol poised to go where no 240Z had gone before. Likewise, there were a bevy of cars from the Z’s racing history nestled at the foot of the Nissan tower. No matter how hard we begged, the Nissan crew wouldn’t let play with the East African Safari 240Z in the open fields around the headquarters, but they did trot out the refreshed 2011 Rogue crossover, and more to the point, they were kind enough to let us have a peek under the fiberglass of Paul Newman’s Bob Sharp prepared 1981 Datsun ZX Turbo. That’ll do.

Autoblog gets seat and simulation time with Toyota’s newest safety technology [w/video]

Inside Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji tech center – Click above for high-res image gallery

Sitting in the shadow of Mount Fuji, Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji technical center is part proving grounds and part engineering center. But unlike most facilities, Higashi-Fuji includes an array of engineering and research offices employing over 3,000 employees, and an assortment of non-track test facilities.

The Higashi-Fuji campus opened back in 1966 and has grown to encompass nearly 2.7 millionsquare feet of facility floor space. We were given the rare opportunity to visit the facility where we witnessed one unique crash test, tried out one of the world’s most advanced driving simulators and sampled an assortment of new safety features, including a brake override system, enhanced pre-collision braking, pedestrian detection and updated ABS calibrations for the Prius. Make the jump for the full report.

Car Prices Will Climb For Years

Have you’ve been watching car prices lately? They seem to go up every month. Forget everything you’ve been reading about sales incentives, bargain leases or low-cost financing. They just mask the fact that automakers are quietly bumping up MSRP’s every chance they get.

In other words, they quietly raise the price of a car and then loudly announce the deals they’re offering. Sure, you get a discount. But that discount comes off an ever-higher price.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say again. By 2015, the average new car in the American market is going to cost about $35,000. I’m not talking about the MSRP, which is already at an average of $33,000. I’m talking about the transaction price, what people actually pay for a car.

There are a variety of reasons why this is happening. But it basically comes down to this: even though car sales are very weak, we’re actually in a seller’s market. The planets are in alignment for automakers to raise their prices, especially for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. And it’s only going to get worse.

John McElroy is host of the TV program “Autoline Detroit” and daily web video “Autoline Daily”. Every week he brings his unique insights as a Detroit insider to Autoblog readers.

X Games 16 Subaru Practice Session – Click above for high-res image gallery

It was just a short time ago – five years, to be exact – that rallying was introduced as a competition in the X Games. The first event started out in spectacular fashion, with Travis Pastrana beating out the late Colin McRae after the former World Rally Championship winner rolled his car with just a few turns to go.

Since then, the competition has become stronger and car manufacturers have increased their involvement as interest in the sport has increased thanks to ESPN’s mainstream audience. This year looks to be one of the most exciting events yet with a host of new cars, new drivers, new rules and even a new event. Follow the jump to learn about what to expect for this year’s X Games 16 and what it’s like to ride shotgun in a 500-horsepower rally car.

Regrets, I’ve Had a Few: Jonny Lieberman bids farewell to Autoblog

A little over a month ago, I got a call from Jonny. Something was up. He was excited and anxious, and before the words “MacKenzie offered me a job, and I’ve accepted” came out of his mouth, I knew he was off to greener pastures.

I’m proud of a lot of things at Autoblog, but getting Dr. Lieberman on board is near the top of that list. And now he’s gone, taking the Senior Editor position at Motor Trend after the buff book’s editor-in-chief called and said, “We need to talk.” Plenty of people have moved on from Autoblog over the years, but given Jonny’s penchant for prose and never-say-die attitude, we asked him to pen a farewell letter before heading off to do some ludicrous comparison test for MT. You’ll be missed, sir, so the floor is yours… one last time.

Damon Lavrinc – Senior Editor

Working at Autoblog has been one of the best experiences of my car-writing career. As you may or may not know, if there’s a website about cars, odds are it’s hoisted my byline at some point. From The Truth About Cars to Jalopnik to Clunkbucket and most points in between, I’ve cranked out some auto-centric virtual ink nearly everywhere. But Autoblog was the feather in my digital cap. No car website commands more respect, is more widely read or opens as many doors. And yeah, a pretty big door just got opened for me.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the wonderful men behind the screen. I’ve worked at some sites filled with mega-friendly people that weren’t capable of pouring piss from a boot. Other places were hyper-competent and staffed almost totally with assholes. Autoblog combined near-ruthless professionalism with the kind of positive working environment you only dream about in any job. It really is a wonderful operation, one that sent me Japanese whiskey as a wedding gift. Thanks to Damon Lavrinc for always being in my corner and John Neff for not only giving me the chance, but for running such a tight ship. I’d like to thank especially Drew Phillips, “my photographer,” for putting up with my right foot on all those canyon runs.

But of course, it’s not all roses and sunshine. There are quite a few things I regret. In true Butthole Surfers fashion, allow me to quote, “Well son, the funny thing about regret is, it’s better to regret something you have done, than to regret something you haven’t done.” Sadly, while there’s nothing I regret doing at Autoblog (well, maybe SEMA), there’s a whole slew of things I regret not doing. With that in mind, here’s a small list of stuff that for one reason (lazy!) or another (extra lazy!) I never got around to sharing. Read on…
