Mercedes-Benz announces in-car iPad integration

Mercedes-Benz iPad integration

Apple continues its march towards world domination. Since its introduction, automakers have paid a lot of attention to the iPad; Hyundai plans to use the device as an Equus owner’s manual, while Chevrolet, Ford and Volkswagen have developed apps for it, and BMW has introduced an in-car docking system for the super tablet.

Not one to be left off the technology train, Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to create its own headrest-mounted iPad docks. The units will allow rear passengers to use and charge iPads, which could usher in a whole new era of back-seat driving as the iPad navigation app battles it out with the factory unit up front.

Mercedes-Benz will do the ‘unthinkable’ to go green

At the Mercedes press conference during last week’s Paris Auto Show, the company rolled out its CLS – the car everyone was really there to see – for dessert. We couldn’t have our pudding without eating our meat, though, so there were five courses served before it: the Smart Ad Lib, Smart scooter, Smart bicycle, Mercedes A-Class E-Cell, and a 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel S-Class, throughout which time Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche and Smart head Annette Winkler took a good thirty minutes to stress the consumer and environmental friendliness of the brand’s offerings.

This will not be an isolated incident, either. Zetsche said “We want to be efficiency world champions … and we will be,” and to do so will require initiatives that were “previously unthinkable,” such as the hybrid S-Class and the coming four-cylinder. While there’s no timeline placed on his pronouncement, it is clear that if M-B is going to stay with BMW and Audi in the emissions and efficiency stakes it will need to take a sledgehammer to conventional ideas of the brand.

Audi has laid out its electronic initiatives and BMW has its Efficient Dynamics, but so far Mercedes has only laid out a range of different projects under no particular umbrella, such as an all-hybrid S-Class line, more efficient ICE engines, and a new range of small cars for America. We wait to see if there is one particular way M-B will ultimately go to fulfill its aim… and if that way will include euthanizing Maybach…

Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz ML AMG snapped with less disguise

Mercedes-Benz is in the process of updating the AMG side of the family, including the replacement of its 6.2-liter engines with the more efficient 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V8. One of the models set to receive the new mill is the 2012 M-Class, and photogs posted outside the Nürburgring have caught the revised SUV getting ready to push its prodigious weight around the circuit.

The current generation ML63 AMG churns out 503 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, but with the twin-turbo 5.5-liter mill bolted in, the reworked high-po ML could see at least 544 hp and close to 600 lb-ft of twist. In addition to the upgraded engine, the camo-clad mule also benefits from a more aggressive lower-front fascia, a new character line running across the side and an assortment of other revised body mods, all of which should make their way to the new model when it goes on sale early next year.

Review: 2010 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG w/P31 Development Package

As Subtle As Dropping A TV Set From A Hotel Balcony

Roger Daltrey has gone on record as saying that in the Who’s early days, they were paid ₤75 to ₤150 a show, yet they would bust-up around ₤250-300 worth of gear every time they took to the stage. That’s bad math. Similarly, Mercedes-Benz asks those willing to pay $57,350 for its least expensive AMG model – the C63 AMG – to pony up a further $5,950 for the new-for-2010 P31 AMG Development Package that adds 30 horsepower, uprated brakes and a passel of miscellaneous hi-po gear.

From the perspective of a rational consumer, this too, fails to add up, as the standard-issue C63 is already a hooligan’s hooligan, a car from which no sane individual would walk away wishing for bigger stones. But as with Daltrey’s Who, the C63 is a fantastically overachieving beast of rather pedestrian roots, and when it comes down to it, adding the Dev Pack promises to be like dropping off Pete Townshend in the brand-new lobby of a mid-’60s Holiday Inn. With a set of Marshall stacks. Drunk and fresh off a painful breakup. In other words, it might not make a whole lot of sense or be a particularly wise financial decision, but it’s also a brave call with the glorious potential for unbridled mayhem.

Paris 2010: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG mixes Wall Street and Miami Vice

Making the swap from a naturally aspirated 6.3- 6.2-liter V8 to a direct injection, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 hasn’t at all reduced the Mercedes CL63 AMG’s brawny beauty. The standard version gets 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Opt for the AMG Performance Package and you boost that to 571 hp and 664 lb-ft. All that power doesn’t come with a bigger fuel price, either: at 22 combined miles per gallon with the help of stop/start and the AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sport transmission, the new car posts a 25 percent increase in fuel economy over the 6.2-liter beast.

The AMG Performance Package that throws in all that extra gumption also comes with double-spoke wheels in titanium gray, extra carbon fiber trim under the hood and in the cabin, as well as a leather and Alcantara steering wheel. With it you get a 4.4-second 0-60 time, without you’ll have to make do with 4.5 seconds.

Helping you keep things composed while on the move are crosswind stabilization added to the Active Body Control, Direct Steer and Torque Vectoring Braking, which brakes the inside wheel when necessary to maintain crispness when things go curvy. If you’re looking for a bit of green, you’ll find it in the regenerative braking. The rest better be in your wallet. All the details are in the press release after the jump and the high-res gallery of images below.

Spy Shots: Clearest look yet at 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK spied

We’ve been staring at spy shots of the forthcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK for months, but now we have our best look yet at what Benz’ baby coupe will look like once the camo tape is peeled away.

The grille gets a nose job to match its larger SLS AMG sibling, and the photo above reveals it to be a more pleasing aesthetic than in previous shots. Also, it seems the new SLK wants to play with the cool kids who are all wearing LED running lights.

If our intel holds up, the reason behind the larger grille isn’t just to mimic the gorgeous gullwing, but to feed the new 476 horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. If that mill is going in any SLK, it’ll be wearing an AMG badge on the back, and we’re hoping to get a better look when we stop by the Mercedes-Benz booth at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

Mercedes-Benz has just released a new ad for its new 2012 CLS. The big German luxury yacht is one of the more stylish sedans in its segment thanks to its fresh redesign, and apparently, rascally young whippersnappers will do just about anything to bring the car to a stop so they can get a better look. Or something.

Though the overall “coupe-like” shape of the CLS remains for next year, Mercedes-Benz has infused the vehicle with a number of design elements aimed at giving the four-door a little bit more soul. Along with the corporate upright grille and dizzying headlight array up front, the sides of the vehicle now feature some seriously flared fenders and an elegant crease just below the shoulder line.

We dig. Mercedes-Benz plans to show off the 2012 CLS in the flesh at this year’s Paris Motor Show starting next month. Hit the jump to take a look at the new commercial.

Ex-Hyundai and Benz stylist Piaskowski joins Ford as head of exterior design

Joel Piaskowski, designerAccording to AutoWeek, Joel Piaskowski, formerly of General Motors, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz, is now making his way to Ford to head the exterior design team for the automaker in the Americas.

Piaskowski is perhaps best known for penning the Hyundai Genesis coupe and sedan – two vehicles that helped change the Korean automaker’s image here in the United States. He then left Hyundai at the end of 2008 to become the head of design at Mercedes-Benz’s advanced design studio in Irvine, California. Following his departure in March of this year, Piaskowski officially joins Ford Motor Company on October 1.

With recent debuts like the Fiesta as well as the upcoming Focus, Ford is proving that it’s capable of creating great design. Adding Piaskowski to the mix of clever-eyed design team should only strengthen Ford’s future portfolio, and we’re eager to see what new designs come out of the Blue Oval under the journeyman’s leadership.

Mercedes-Benz unveils the limited production A-Class E-Cell electric vehicle

Mercedes-Benz has dropped the curtain on its latest electrical wonder, the A-Class E-Cell. The vehicle is scheduled for a limited production run of just 500 units, with lucky lessees in Germany, France and The Netherlands expected to receive the majority of them. Unfortunately, a company spokesman told Inside Line that the A-Class E-Cell will not show up on U.S. soil. This Europe-only offering showcases Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electric drive technology and will be produced at the company’s Rastatt plant in Germany.

The four-door, five-passenger, minivanish-looking E-Cell is based on the company’s standard A-Class hatchback. The electric goodies include a 70kW (peak output, 95 horsepower) motor that churns out a rather remarkable 214 pound-feet of torque and twin lithium-ion batteries that supposedly provide up to 124 miles of range between charges. Top speed is a highway-capable 93 miles per hour. Speaking of that electric motor and powerful battery pack, Mercedes-Benz has the following to say:

This makes the A‑Class E‑Cell an outstandingly assured and dynamic performer on the road, taking just 5.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 km/h.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-Cell is set to debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of the month, but you can hit the jump to discover a whole lot more about it right now.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe spy shotWe know that Mercedes-Benz is planning on rolling out both a coupe and convertible version of its popular C-Class sedan, and now we also have an idea of what the interior is going to look like. We’re still quite curious to see the upcoming luxury coupe parked next to its two-door E-Class brethren. The E-Class currently rides on the C-Class platform and it will be interesting to see how the two vehicles stack up in the size department.

We have some burning questions to ask the automaker and we hope to have answers courtesy of the upcoming Paris Motor Show. What are the price points for the 2011 C-Class coupe, cabrio, and redesigned sedan? Will the two-door C-Class ride on the same platform as the sedan? Most importantly, when can we get the keys to a C63 coupe?
