BMW pondering first Latin America plant?

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, BMW, South America

BMW Roundel logoBMW may be planning to set up a new manufacturing facility in Brazil. The automaker currently only sells around 10,000 units per year in the South American country, but BMW has seen sales leap by 50 percent annually in the market for the past few years. According to Reuters, standards of living in Brazil are increasing at a rapid pace as the country prepares to host both the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. Those increases have helped to fuel light vehicle sales, which ticked up by 11 percent in 2010 to 3.33 million units. That figure surpasses even Germany’s appetite for passenger cars.

If BMW does decide to set up camp in the southern hemisphere, odds are the company will simply outfit its Manaus motorcycle manufacturing facility to handle assembly of completely knocked-down vehicle kits, at least at first. Should sales increase by leaps and bounds, Reuters reports that BMW would consider a full-fledged manufacturing facility to help satiate demand. The company says that sales of as little as 50,000 units could make such a move worthwhile.

2013 BMW i3 – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Footage from cold-weather testing of the BMW i3 in Sweden has surfaced, showcasing the all-electric city car’s rear-wheel-drive platform and penchant for getting sideways. These are still early tests, as the full production i3 isn’t expected to be ready until 2013.

Still, with 150 horsepower on tap from a rear-mounted electric lump, the little BMW could well be a barrel of laughs, as well as an environmentally-responsible mode of transportation. Of course, we wouldn’t expect much range with these kinds of antics…

The BMW i3 sports an aluminum body around a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic passenger compartment, and will be considered a premium micro car when it hits showrooms. How premium? Expect the price tag to creep past $40,000. See how much fun electric drifting can be in the video after the break.

Report: BMW and Volkswagen evacuate employees from Japan

Filed under: Etc., Japan, Safety, BMW, Volkswagen

japan flag bmw and vw logo

The situation in Japan is still very tense and evolving on a moment-to-moment basis, and it will take years for the nation to fully recover from the earthquake and tsunami. In response to the still-dangerous developing situation, at least two European automakers who operate facilities there have decided to bring home some of their foreign nationals.

According to Automotive News Europe, BMW employs 750 people in Japan, and 50 or so of its German employees have returned to their home country. Volkswagen has around 600 workers located in Japan, and so far, 30 of the 40 German employees have left the disaster-stricken nation.

Will other automakers follow suit?

Video: BMW releases official M5 flick

BMW M5 Teaser Video

BMW M5 teaser video – Click above to watch video after the jump

BMW just can’t seem to help itself when it comes to sharing frosty videos of the next-generation M5 undergoing winter testing. The German automaker has released this second clip to accompany the first, complete with plenty of shots of the muscle-bound sedan getting sideways on the powder. We’re a little handicapped by the fact that we don’t speak German, but that certainly didn’t stop us from enjoying watching the big four door do what it does best on the white stuff.

We still can’t help but feel a pang of remorse for the loss of the naturally-aspirated V10 that powers the current M5, but from what we hear, the new twin-turbo V8 will give us plenty to sing about. Unfortunately, rumor has it that buyers won’t be able to pick up their next-gen M5 with a manual transmission. Still, we’ve got our fingers crossed that BMW will still offer a third pedal in the meanest of the fives. After all, if American buyers can take home the new 6 Series with a row-your-own gearbox, a manual transmission option shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for the M5. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.

BMW confirms New Energy Vehicle, an electric 5 Series for China

The Chinese will get their very own plug-in hybrid BMW at next month’s Shanghai Motor Show when BMW debuts the 2011 5 Series New Energy Vehicle. According to BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, the car – based on the long-wheelbase 5 Series – is aimed specifically at the Chinese market.

There wasn’t much else to be had from BMW about the New Energy Vehicle, except that it probably won’t hit North American shores. It may, however, loan some of its technology to the ActiveHybrid 5, which BMW showed off as a concept last year. So far, we’re still waiting on the production version of that car, which uses a more traditional gasoline-electric hybrid set up.

BMW M3 Pickup Spy Shots

There aren’t words to convey just how happy this makes us. With Spring officially licking at the sanctified asphalt of the Nürburgring, testing season has kicked into high gear. Our elite squad of spy photographers has set up camp to take in the action and happened to catch this bizarre beastie obliterating its tires amongst a herd of other BMW mules. As you might expect, there’s exactly zero information on the machine other than it looks for all the world to be an M3 pickup.

Trust us when we say that we’re going to sleep more soundly tonight knowing that somewhere in the world, this creation exists.

We have no idea what the BMW engineers are up to with this one, though we love the idea of an M3-powered spiritual successor to the El Camino throne (bonus points for the camouflage as racing stripes motif, too). Assumed to have the same 4.0-liter V8 found in the nose of the current M3, this beast should be be good for 414 horsepower – perfect for making lickety-split runs to the hardware store.

We’d sell a passel of vital organs for a little seat time in this thing, even if it does simply turn out to be an early April Fool’s joke. The shots are real, so perhaps BMW’s design team are just blowing off some steam, or readying a one-off for Europe’s tuner extravaganza of choice, the Essen Motor Show?

Hamann gives the BMW X6 M with more power, matte paint and… salmon skin?

Filed under: Aftermarket, Performance, SUV, Geneva Motor Show, Europe, BMW, Specialty

BMW Hamann X6 M

2011 Hamann Tycoon EVO M – Click above for high-res image gallery

Hamann has released the decidedly abrasive Tycoon EVO M, its take on the 2011 BMW X6 M. In typical Hamann fashion, everything about the car is completely beyond comprehension. First, Hamann added an entire herd of horsepower to the stock figure, kicking the total from an already absurd 550 to a stupefying 670. According to Hamannn, all that power translates into a 186-mile-per-hour top end.

Outside, the big Bimmer has been widened by 60 millimeters, taking it from huge to gargantuan. Its new-found size is set off by a carbon-accented matte-black paint scheme sitting atop 23-inch wheels at all four corners, also in matte black. The taillights, roof rack, hood, rear spoiler, antenna and exhaust surround all get the carbon fiber treatment.

Where things get truly insane is the interior, though, where Hamann has eschewed carbon fiber or aluminum trim in favor of Nanai Salmon Leather. Hamann says its as durable and luxurious as traditional interior leather, and carries the look and structure of salmon skin. In reality, it looks very similar to snake skin. Setting off the interesting trim choice is the usual litany of Alacantara-trimmed seats and quilted leather upholstery. Read the full details for yourself in the press blast after the jump.

2012 BMW 650i Coupe – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Following closely on the heels of the official images-and-press-blast debut of the 2012 BMW 650i, BMW has let loose video footage of its next big coupe.

Having lost the squared-off decklid of the last 6 Series, the 2012 650i is sleeker and more aggressively styled than the last generation. In motion, the coupe looks silky smooth, but ready to pounce thanks to its 400-horsepower twin-turbo V8.

As pretty as this thing is, it’s hard not to start squirreling your pennies away for this thing’s Stateside launch. Pricing for the 650i is still a mystery, but we expect it will be pretty dear. Click past the jump to see BMW’s new grand tourer in motion.
