Ford claims that the 2011 Boss 335 GT packs the most-powerful V8 ever offered in an Australian sedan. And after seeing four-time Australian Touring Car champ Allan Moffat at the wheel, we’re inclined to believe them.

The Boss 335 GT squeezes 450 horsepower from a supercharged, DOHC 5.0-liter V8 based on the same mill powering the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in the U.S. With 10 more horsepower than our Mustang and two more doors, the Boss 335 GT is likely one of the most efficient ways of getting you and three friends arrested Down Under.

Unfortunately, that privilege is reserved solely for the Australians, as there’s zero chance the Boss 335 GT will come to our shores. Hear the 335 GT in action after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Dan!

Report: UAW boss calls Mulally’s salary “morally wrong”

UAW boss Bob King

After the miracle Ford CEO Alan Mulally and his One Ford team pulled off in turning around the company in the face of an industry meltdown, it might seem hard to argue about the amount of money the CEO makes. But that’s exactly what United Auto Workers President Bob King did in front of reporters at an event in Detroit, calling Mulally’s $54.5 million stock payment “morally wrong.”

CNN Money reports that King said that he liked Mulally, but added, “It creates problems for Ford in both the salaried work force and the hourly work force. It seems like one individual is getting all of the gain.”

So how and why would King bring up Mulally’s pay at a time when Ford just doled out $5,000 in profit sharing checks to the union? King’s statements come as the UAW prepares to negotiate with the Detroit 3 automakers on a new labor contract to replace the last deal that was ratified in 2007. Yeah, that may have something to do with it…

King wouldn’t go into specifics when asked what the UAW is looking for in the next contract, but did add that he’d like to get back some of the concessions the UAW agreed upon when the Detroit 3 were losing money by the bushel full. The UAW boss also said that he wasn’t looking for a contract that will make Detroit automakers uncompetitive.

With the launch of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 street car in the books, Ford has turned its attention to the racetrack and has begun testing the Boss 302S race car that is set for production later this year. The Boss 302S was unveiled in December as a replacement for the FR500S Mustang and is a notch above the Laguna Seca package but not quite as hardcore as the Boss 302R.

Fortunately, Ford Racing had the cameras rolling at the recent test session at Homestead-Miami Speedway and has uploaded some footage of the Boss 302S on track. The car sounds even better than the street car and is capable of hitting 150 miles per hour on Homestead’s front straight. Turn up your speakers, then click past the jump to watch the video.

America’s Answer To The BMW M3

The Trans-Am series of the late 1960s and early 1970s could be considered the golden era of American motorsports. Not only did it showcase the most desirable American cars of the time, but it featured some of the world’s greatest racing drivers engaging in this country’s own brand of fender-banging racing.

It’s why Ford is so proud of the Boss 302, winner of the 1970 Trans-Am season with legendary driver Parnelli Jones behind the wheel, and why the street car has become a legend. But ask Jim Farley, Ford’s head honcho of marketing, about the 2012 Mustang Boss 302, and he’ll tell you that it’s not just about building a remake of the original. “This is not a nostalgia project,” he told us. “This is not in any way trying to bring back the Boss. This project is so much more than that. If we wanted to do that we could take a 5.0-liter, put some stripes and spoilers and other upgrades on it and that would be it. It was not a means to an end. The Boss 302 was originally a means to an end. It was a production car to go racing. This is a completely different project. We were not going to do this project unless we could beat an M3 at this track.” This track being the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

With Bavaria’s best sportscar in it sights, did Ford achieve its goal of building a modern day legend, or is the 2012 Boss 302 simply another one of the infinite variations of the Ford Mustang? Ford invited us out to Monterey for a full day with the car, including some track time at Laguna Seca, and we have the answer.

We eagerly await the day someone hands us the keys to a 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca. When that day arrives, we know the color of the will unfortunately not be Grabber Blue.

Regular production versions of the car will only be offered in either black or silver with red accents… and that’s a darn shame – we can say with certainty that the Boss 302 here at Barrett-Jackson looks damn good in Grabber Blue. Volkswagen’s U.S. boss wants Scirocco in the States

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Whenever anyone brings up the Scirocco, we still can’t help but wince a bit at the fact that the United States was snubbed from the car’s second coming. Apparently we’re not alone. According to USA Today, Volkswagen America head honcho Jonathan Browning wouldn’t mind seeing the low-slung three-door on our shores, either. Browning said that while Volkswagen was unable to make a solid business case for bringing the Scirocco to the U.S. market the last time around, he still wants to see the car in our neck of the woods. Unfortunately, we may have to wait a few years before that happens.

Browning said that there were a few other more pressing items on his plate at the moment, including improving his company’s quality and making the dealer experience more tolerable. Those seem like plenty noble goals, but we still wouldn’t mind seeing the ‘Rocco on American soil sooner rather than later. While we love the Golf GTI as much as the next lead-footed American, there’s just something about a Scirocco that flips all the right switches.

We’re waiting, VW.

Former Shell boss predicts $5/gal gas in 2012

Gas price sign shows pricing at an arm and a legWith fuel prices in a temporarily lofty spot thanks to the holidays, it’s hard to think of the price of a gallon of gas as a bargain, but according to the former president of Shell Oil, that’s exactly what it is compared to what we’ll see just one short year from now. While speaking with Platt’s Energy Week Television, John Hofmeister said that he fully expects gas prices to be above $5.00 per gallon by the end of 2012. That stance puts Hofmeister firmly in the worst-case scenario club, though other analysts are barely any jollier in their predictions.

Tom Kloza, who serves as the chief oil analyst with Oil Price Information Service, believes that Hofmeister’s predictions will come true, just not in the time-frame that the former Shell head honcho has predicted. Instead, Kloza says that he expects $5.00/gallon fuel to show up within the next decade. If so, we can probably expect to see a repeat of the financial shock that occurred when fuel prices shot up in mid-2008. The predictions are enough to make us a little queasy, so you have to really feel for our friends in Blighty – the UK recently saw gas prices spike to $7.30 a gallon. What will their prices be in 2012?

Ford shows Aussies who’s Boss with special FPV Falcon

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Ford, Australia

FPV Boss 335 GT

There’s no shortage of similarities to be found between Australia and the United States. Both are former British colonies flying red, white and blue flags; both are big masses of land divided into states; both have Top Gear spinoffs and share a common affinity for Crocodile Dundee. We could go on, but the key commonality here is love for muscle cars. More than anything, that’s what ties these two countries together from opposite ends of the Earth.

General Motors has capitalized on that shared trait by bringing powerful Holdens over to America under Pontiac badges. Arch-rival Ford, meanwhile, has gone the other way, taking a popular American performance badge and slapping it on one of its Australian products.

The result is the Ford Boss 335 GT. Based on the Falcon sedan, Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) has given the Boss 335 GT a touch more power than the 2012 Boss 302 Mustang: the 335’s supercharged 5.0-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 pumps out 450 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque (compared to the 440hp and 380 lb-ft on the all-motor Boss Mustang). The power’s driven to the 19″ rear wheels through a six-speed manual and kept in check by oversized, cross-drilled and ventilated Brembo brakes.

FPV’s also made sure the special Falcon got all the requisite striping you’d expect from a Boss, and equipped the interior with everything they bad to throw at it. With the American and Australian dollars close to par, though, the $70,000 sticker price may seem a little steep. UNfortunately, this is an exclusively Aussie product, so if you (i.e. our U.S. readers) want to show ’em who’s Boss, you’ll have to stick to the Mustang. Dang.

Ford has yet to officially release pricing for the 2012 Mustang Boss 302, but a forum member over at TheMustangSource.com with some inside information has revealed that the special edition pony car will retail for $40,995 including destination and delivery. This places the Boss 302 almost squarely in the middle between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT500.

While certain things like a navigation system won’t be available, Boss 302 customers will have a few options to choose from. Recaro seats and a Torsen differential adds $1,995, an Accessory Package with floor mats and car cover go for an extra $475, and Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat paint is an additional $495. The track-oriented Laguna Seca Package comes in at a grand total of $47,990.

At first we weren’t sure about the complete accuracy of the information, but a representative at Ford has confirmed these numbers and options. So is the 2012 Boss 302 a steal at $40,995 or is that crazy money for a hopped up pony car with a live rear axle? Let us know in the comments below.
