Rumormill: Next Bugatti Veyron to hit 270 mph

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Bugatti, Rumormill, Luxury

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Bugatti is reportedly beginning work on the next generation Veyron, and rumor has it that they’re looking to hit Ludicrous Speed. Okay, maybe it won’t go quite that fast, but with a target of 270 miles per hour, it figures to be pretty darn close.

According to AutoExpress, despite losing money on each one it builds, Volkswagen Group has no plans to watch its mighty hypercar fade away, and the next version will stick to the business of shattering perceptions of what a production car can do. Reportedly, the 8.0-liter W16 engine and its quad-turbo setup will return in a similar form as is employed in the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. However, the new car will head to the scales and produce a number far below what we see in current Veyron models. It will achieve this through more extensive use of lightweight alloys and carbon-composite materials.

If AE is reading its tea leaves correctly, the new warp-speed Bugatti Veyron to make an appearance sometime in 2013.

Paefgen hands Dürheimer the keys to Bentley… and Bugatti

Wolfgang Dürheimer and Franz-Josef Paefgen

The king is dead. Long live the king.

After eight years at the helm of Bentley, Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen has officially stepped down from his position as chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors. Following the announcement a little over a month ago, the longtime Volkswagen group executive has literally handed the keys over to his successor, Wolfgang Dürheimer, on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show.

The official changing of the guard took place when Dürheimer accepted the keys to the vintage 1930 Bentley 8-Litre saloon that served as company founder W.O. Bentley’s personal transport.

Intriguingly, Dürheimer will also be taking charge of Bugatti. The two executive rolls were combined when Paefgen took the head office at Molsheim as well upon the resignation of Thomas Bscher from Bugatti’s helm. Industry insiders were waiting to see whether the brands would be placed under separate leadership once Paefgen was out of the picture, but now we have an answer.

Bugatti launches new online configurator… complete with Rape Yellow

Looking to kill some time? Online car configurators are sure to do the trick, and one of our favorites is Bugatti’s. The ultra-luxe exotic automaker lets you specify from a staggering array of colors and options, and have recently launched a new version with even more choices than before.

Astute reader Bryan was playing around with the new web feature and found he could customize the colors on even the smallest detail. Say, the air intakes, for example, which needn’t be the same color as the body or any of the other details, but can be painted in any of a hundred or more different colors. Including “Rape Yellow”.

Now Bugatti didn’t make up this color. It takes its name from a yellow flower, known in Latin as Brassica napus and in English as the rape, from which we get rapeseed oil. Since “rape” (to most people at least) doesn’t have such a wonderful connotation, the oil is often referred to as Canola. Would Bugatti do well to do the same? Follow the jump to see how Bryan, whom we thank for the tip, stumbled upon this little gem.

Video: EVO‘s Chris Harris takes on the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport with EVO's Chris Harris

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport reviewed by EVO’s Chris Harris – Click above to watch video after the jump

We know what resident lucky bastard Autoblog contributor Rex Roy thinks about the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Now we get another perspective on the hypercar courtesy of EVO magazine’s Chris Harris. His thoughts? Occasionally frustrating, yet worth every penny. Harris laments that he gets an amazing sensation of speed yet he has to be off the gas almost as quickly as he gets on it. The 267-mph Veyron Super Sport just moves too quickly for everyday situations.

Since it is Chris Harris behind the wheel, we’re treated to a nice patch-laying takeoff before he launches into a discussion of the car. The clip, which you can find after the jump, also treats us to a little over a minute of no talking… just footage of the car. Wonderful.

“It is not possible,” was the answer from Jens Schulenburg, Bugatti vehicle engineering chief. He was answering the question as to whether a standard Veyron could be modified to be as fast as the 2011 Super Sport edition. “It is like a domino effect,” he explained, “To get more horsepower, you need more cooling. To get more cooling, you need more airflow through more and bigger radiators. To accomplish this, you need to redesign the front end. When you do that, you change the aerodynamic balance of the car at speed. To rebalance the car, you need to change the roof and rear fascia.” Schulenburg could have kept going. For an hour.

We got the picture: The $2.58 million Super Sport is not a standard Veyron with a chip. Shame on you for even thinking that. Consider the Super Sport a Veyron 2.0 release; a significant re-engineering of the 1001-horsepower, sixteen-cylinder, quad-turbo, all-wheel-drive supercar.

But given the Veyron’s sales success – they’ve sold approximately 260 since the vehicle’s debut in 2005 – why go to all the trouble for a maximum of 40 cars? (Bugatti will cease Veyron coupe production at 300 units.) “Current Veyron owners wanted a more dynamic, exciting driving experience,” said Julius Kruta, Bugatti’s Head of Tradition. “Most of the orders booked for the Super Sport are from current Veyron owners. They asked us for a car that felt more extreme.” Is that even possible? We flew to Spain to find out.

Video: Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is ‘Absolutely Crackers!’

Of all the phrases in the English language, few are likely to as accurately describe what it’s like to drop the hammer on the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport as “absolutely crackers.” That is if you’re trying to keep things PG, at least. The crew from Autocar managed to beg, borrow and steal their way into the cockpit of what is perhaps our era’s pinnacle of production automotive engineering for a quick blast through the European countryside. Fortunately enough for all of you, they were also kind enough to video the whole shebang.

With a total of 1,200 horsepower and 1,100 lb-ft of torque, the Super Sport is the standard Veyron on amphetamines. If you’re brave enough, this horse will theoretically gallop all the way to 268 mph. Of course, you’d need a stretch of highway long enough to not only hit those speeds, but to come back down from them as well. There’s no need to worry, they’re not driving that black-and-orange one again, so hit the jump to see Autocar’s take on the Veyron Super Sport.

Bugatti Veyron vs. BMW S1000 RR – Which is fastest?

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Etc., BMW, Bugatti, Motorcycle

2010 Bugatti Veyron versus BMW S 1000 RR

Car guys insist that their four-wheeled machines are as fun as any motorcycle. The two-wheeled, leather-clad bike folks laugh at this notion, then scream off into the twisties at 9,000 rpm. The discussion can go back and forth until both parties are blue in the face. Inside Line decided it would be fun to put two powerful examples, one car and one motorcycle, to the test. These aren’t just run-of-the-mill vehicles, either: In one corner is a 2010 Bugatti Veyron while in the other sits a 2010 BMW S 1000 RR. The battleground? Forest roads around Molsheim, France

The Veyron obviously has the power advantage, thanks to its quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 engine that produces 1,001 horsepower. The 190-horsepower BMW, however, has a huge weight advantage and the agile bike can get around any Citroën-shaped obstacles that it might come across.

The staff at Inside Line give the nod to the bike, for a number of valid reasons. It makes more sense in a day-to-day atmosphere, can slip through traffic, and when the luggage rack is applied it has more cargo capacity. The S 1000 RR also gains an edge when comparing maintenance costs. Changing a tire on a bike isn’t too much of a hit to the wallet, but to change the full set of rubber on the Bugatti costs $90,000. Furthermore, there are only two machines in the world capable of handling that job — one in France and another here in the US.

Regardless of the outcome, the pair both represent unique forms of engineering excellence and the real winner of the shootout is Inside Line. Getting to spend time with either vehicle is a treat, but getting to do it on a scenic French road is a dream. Head on over to Inside Line to live vicariously through their lucky contributor.

Video: Barrett-Jackson buyer reneges on $700,000 Bugatti Veyron purchase

2008 Bugatti Veyron at Barrett-Jackson

It’s not very often you see a Bugatti Veyron going up for auction…especially at Barrett-Jackson. Perhaps better known for their muscle cars and classics, the occasional late-model sportscar will sometimes pop up, but we can’t ever remember a Veyron crossing the block. Well, on Saturday night, a 2008 Bugatti Veyron with 11,800 miles on the clock did indeed cross the block at B-J…but things didn’t go quite as planned.

The one-time fastest production car on the planet (it’s been trumped by Bugatti’s own Super Sport) might have sold for over $1.8 million new, but was struggling to break the 1 mil mark in Vegas. Heck, it barely got to $700,000. Now, that’s still a lot of money for a car, but it should have brought much more – we’ve never heard of a non-wrecked example going for anywhere near that little. In the end, the Bug went to a guy seated near the stage who outbid a couple of phone bidders – but that’s when it got weird.

Saying that he hadn’t actually bid and then that he was only trying to help, the would-be buyer rescinded his bid… and was promptly escorted from the premises. Barrett-Jackson didn’t want to lose any credibility – so CEO Craig Jackson stepped up and bought the car himself. Just as he was announcing what had happened, he got a phone call from one of the other phone bidders who was saying he’d take the car off Craig’s hands. Quite the little soap opera, but good theater nonetheless. Follow the jump to see the video and take a look at the gallery below as well. Hat tip to Larry!

Report: 2013 will be the year of the Bugatti Galibier

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Bugatti, Rumormill, Luxury

Bugatti 16C Galibier concept

Bugatti 16C Galibier concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

AutoWeek is reporting that the Bugatti 16C Galibier concept is going into production, and the ultralux bruiser will arrive in 2013. There remains 40 examples of the Veyron scheduled to be built, but when that is finished, AW says the Galibier will be prepped for a run of 300 units.

Instead of four turbochargers, though, the sedan will employ two superchargers affixed to the W16 engine and throw down something in the neighborhood of 800 horsepower. And compared to the super-duper coupe that got this whole thing (re)started, it’ll be something of a bargain: just $1.5 million.

Might want to place an order for a bigger piggy bank…
