Video: Seven Marine uses Cadillac CTS-V engines in outboard motors

Seven Marine 557 outboard

Seven Marine 557 – Click above to watch the video after the jump

In case anyone was accusing supercharged, the 556-horsepower LSA V8 that powers the Cadillac CTS-V of lacking versatility, refer to this video and stand corrected. Custom boatbuilder Seven Marine has taken the enormously powerful engines and adapted them to a marine outboard application.

According to Seven Marine, its 557 is the most powerful outboard ever made. The grunt is channeled to the water through an electronically-controlled ZF transmission. The Seven Marine 557 is also the first outboard ever to be joystick-controlled.

According to Seven, it can be hung as a single-engine setup on a 25 to 27-foot boat, or in a double, triple or quad setup on boats ranging up to 55 feet. Seven Marine claims the engine should be good for a 10-20 percent efficiency and performance increase over standard onboard engines because it requires fewer gear sets to operate, which means less drag. You can check the CTS-V-powered marine setup in the video after the jump.

Spy Shots: Latest Cadillac XTS prototype caught inside and out

2013 Cadillac XTS spy shots

We’ve seen spy photos of Cadillac’s upcoming XTS before, but only from far away. Now, our intrepid spy photographers have managed to get up-close and personal with the new Caddy flagship, giving us a sneak peak at the sedan’s interior in the process.

Based on the XTS Platinum concept shown at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, this new Cadillac sedan will replace both the STS and DTS within the automaker’s lineup. This way, the current entry-level CTS can move slightly upmarket to allow for a new, smaller ATS sedan (alphabet soup, we know) that is slated to arrive in the summer of 2012. The XTS is expected to use the same Epsilon II platform that underpins the Buick LaCrosse, and we expect both front- and all-wheel-drive variants to be available.

A quick glimpse at this prototype’s interior shows that it will be very similarly designed to the CTS, though we certainly hope that higher-quality materials will be in place. (Let’s be honest – the CTS’ interior was fine for 2008, but it’s ready for an update). Other new details spotted on this test car include a set of Brembo brakes up front (is an XTS-V in the works?) and large, 19-ish-inch wheels. See the full slate of photos in our high-res image gallery below.

Report: 10,000 Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac SRX models face faulty defroster recall

Filed under: Sedan, Recalls, Safety, Crossover, Buick, Cadillac, GM

General MotorsThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and General Motors have announced the recall of 10,000 vehicles. According to The Detroit News, certain 2011 Cadillac SRX and 2011 Buick Lacrosse models may have been built with a defect that can prevent the vehicle’s defroster from effectively clearing the windshield. NHTSA is concerned that the reduced visibility could lead to an accident.

The problem was discovered to during a production trial, in which one in 50 vehicles exhibited the defect.

At the moment, no crashes or incidents have been reported as a result of the programming error, though it’s worth noting that only a third of the 10,179 vehicles covered by the recall actually belong to customers. The rest are either unsold or are awaiting delivery.

GM dealers will reprogram the HVAC software to fix the bug free of charge.

That said, we can still all stare at all the pretty pictures that General Motors has been so kind as to release upon the masses. Check out our high-res image gallery below, where you’ll see the two cars in all their specially prepared, tire-squealing and exhaust-popping glory. Also note that this is the first time the cars have been displayed wearing the official livery of Andy Pilgrim (the No. 8 car) and teammate Johnny O’Connell (the No. 3 car) and they are lapping Sebring for a second session.

Cadillac recalling 50,000 CTS models worldwide over potential handling fault

Filed under: Sedan, Recalls, Safety, Cadillac, Luxury

2010 Cadillac CTS

General Motors and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration have announced a recall of certain 2009 and 2010 model-year Cadillac CTS models. The notice covers around 50,000 units worldwide, 11,147 of which were sold in the States.

According to NHTSA, jam nuts on the vehicles’ suspension could come loose over time, eventually allowing the toe link to completely separate from the vehicle. If this happens, the rear wheel could turn in or out, making the vehicle difficult to steer. GM says that owners may hear a metallic clanking noise in the rear of the vehicle as a warning before this happens.

So far, no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the defect, though NHTSA warns that if left untreated, owners could experience a loss of control.

GM says that it will install new jam nuts free of charge and replace the rear suspension toe link as necessary. A recall schedule hasn’t been established yet, but owners should hear something soon. Hit the jump for the full recall notice.

Cadillac announces comprehensive warranty, scheduled maintenance program for 2011

Filed under: Car Buying, Etc., Cadillac, GM, Luxury

Cadillac Crest

Cadillac is stepping up its customer service game. The General Motors luxury nameplate has announced the introduction of Cadillac Shield – an extensive warranty service scheduled to hit the ground this month. Buyers can now look forward to Cadillac Premium Care Maintenance, which includes oil changes and tire rotations for the first four years or 50,000 miles, as well as the company’s five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage. Pile on five years of 24/7 roadside assistance with courtesy transportation and you’ve got the basic groundwork for the new warranty program.

And to quote every infomercial ever made, “but wait, there’s more.”

OnStar is part of the party with one year of the company’s Directions and Connections plan and its own smart phone app. The app monitors oil life and fuel levels as well as allowing owners to manage simple vehicle tasks (like locking and unlocking the doors) from their phone.

Speaking of apps, Cadillac is rolling in its own smartphone program as part of the deal, too. The Caddy app allows users to locate their vehicle in a parking lot, schedule maintenance, locate dealers in the area and call for roadside assistance. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

Top Gear China pilot to include Cadillac versus… donkey?

top gear china

The rumors appear to be true and Top Gear China is reportedly officially underway. According to the Global Times, a 30-minute pilot episode has been filmed and Chinese comedian Cao Yunjin will be one of the three hosts helming China’s version of the greatest automotive television show… in the world.

The format is expected to remain true to the Top Gear style, but so far, little is known about the actual content being filmed. One challenge from the pilot episode has been leaked, and it apparently features a Cadillac taking on a donkey. The two are tasked with lugging millstones around a farm to see which tackles the job more efficiently. Uh-huh.

Here’s hoping the next challenge involves deciphering Geely’s multi-brand system.

Single-handedly Changing America’s Perception About Station Wagons

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon – Click above for high-res image gallery

If you’ve spent any time on German roads, one thing you’ll notice – right after the speed limit signs with a slash mark through them – is that station wagons are popular.

Nearly every manufacturer builds multiple models ranging from sub-compacts to near full-size behemoths. Mercedes-Benz E-Class and C-Class wagons are everywhere. Ditto for BMW 3 and 5 Series Tourings. Volkswagen, Fiat, Citroen, Seat, Skoda and Peugeot all sell lots of wagons. Perhaps it’s a legacy of the Lamborghini Espada or the undeniable fact that the current M-B E63 AMG wagon is seriously cool, Europeans like wagons.

Americans, on the other hand, don’t. Our country’s collective notion of station wagons is stuck in Clark W. Griswold-land. Too bad. Most Americans have no idea what they’re missing.

Report: 2012 Cadillac SRX to get 3.6L V6

2011 Cadillac SRX

General Motors may have pulled the plug on the Cadillac SRX Turbo, but fear not, we will not be stuck with the anemic 3.0-liter V6 as the Caddy’s sole powerplant. A report from GM Inside News states that the 2012 SRX will use the automaker’s well-received 3.6-liter V6 with direct injection – the unit currently found in the CTS sedan.

Not only is the 3.6-liter V6 more powerful than the outgoing 2.8-liter turbocharged six, it will likely be tweaked to improve overall fuel efficiency when it makes its way under the SRX’s hood. Known internally as “LFX,” this engine currently produces 304 horsepower in the CTS, though rumors have suggested that power will be increased for use in the larger crossover. GM Inside News also reports that the SRX will get a few other tweaks for the 2012 model year, including a heated steering wheel.
