2010 Cadillac SRX recalled over power steering lines

Filed under: China, Recalls, Safety, Crossover, Cadillac, Luxury

General Motors has announced a voluntary recall of the 2010 Cadillac SRX luxury CUV over concerns of possible damaged power steering lines. The recall affects 3,996 units, and of those GM believes only two or three are actually affected by this issue. If the power steering lines in question are damaged, they could leak steering fluid onto the engine and start a fire, which has actually happened in at least one case. GM’s official statement after the jump. [Source: General Motors]

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

This is sort of like a dream come true. We’re already madly in love with the Cadillac CTS-V in both its sedan and sexy coupe forms, and in just a few months, we’ll have a five-door station wagon version that still packs the V’s 556-horsepower supercharged V8, rear-wheel drive and a proper manual transmission. It’s like General Motors made this one just for us (we aren’t complaining). Want one? $62,990, including destination charges.

So, what does $63K get you other than some family haulin’ lunacy on wheels? Leather, heated seats, navigation, HID headlamps, a premium Bose sound system and Cadillac’s premium care maintenance service for four years or 50,000 miles. Optional goodies include the $3,400 Recaro heated and ventilated front chairs (you want these – trust us), $800 19-inch polished aluminum alloys, $600 for slightly fancier wood trim and $300 for suede on the steering wheel and shifter.

Realistically, you can get a perfect CTS-V Wagon with a six-speed manual and the Recaro seats for $66,390. That, folks, is one heck of a bargain. As great as it is, we’re thinking that GM won’t manage to sell a whole bunch of this very niche product, so we’re thinking it’s an easy pick for a future collectible. Hit the jump to read GM’s official press blast.

Report: Cadillac sponsors communist party movie?

Filed under: China, Etc., Cadillac, Luxury

Cadillac SLS

Cadillac is doing its best to secure its spot in the ever-growing Chinese auto market, and according to sources culled by Automobile, the luxury marque may have even gone so far as to sponsor a documentary on the rise of the communist party in the People’s Republic. Depending on which translation you believe, the name of the film is either “The Birth of a Party” or “The Great Achievement of Founding the Party” (both are pretty catchy) and the sponsorship is part of a drive to get the word out about its long-wheel base SLS.

With the number of wealthy individuals in China growing by the day, it should come as no surprise to hear about The Crest doing whatever it can to promote its products in the country. Still, as Automobile points out, it’s only a matter of time before some yokel with an internet connection begins drawing imaginary connections and calling GM out for its contributions to communism.

General Motors has issued a recall notice for 2009-2010 all-wheel drive Cadillac CTS’ and CTS-Vs due to an issue with the front passenger-side knee airbag.

In a collision, the front passenger’s knees are at risk of being hit – however, this risk is only for passengers not wearing their seat belts. Dealers are instructed to replace the glove box assembly and, if necessary, modify the instrument panel structure. Per usual, these services are free of charge and the recall is scheduled to begin on or before October 20th, 2010.

Cadillac CTS-V “Competition” commercial – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Recently, we showed you a behind-the-scenes look at Cadillac’s newest commercial featuring the CTS-V sedan out on Germany’s hallowed-be-thy-name Nürburgring. Now, after all of the editing and post-production work has been completed, we’re left with a brand new television ad spot simply dubbed “The Competition,” showing viewers that one of the world’s fastest sport sedans will strive to be better and better. How can you improve on 0-60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and a ‘Ring run in just 7:59.32? We’re eager to find out.

Aside from the gloriousness of watching a CTS-V do what it does best out on one of the world’s greatest road courses, we like this video because it makes mention of the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG – two vehicles that inspired Cadillac to raise the bar for its own sport sedan. Give credit where credit is due, after all. Still, we like stiff competition, and you can watch Cadillac’s latest ad spot for yourself after the jump.

Behind Cadillac’s “The Competition” commercial for the CTS-V – Click above to watch video after the jump

Once upon a time – May 9, 2008 to be precise – the Cadillac CTS-V ran the ‘Ring in 7:59.32, and just five days later we had video proof of the event. Now that over two years have passed, the feat will leave the geek-o-riffic world of ‘Ring time watchers and be shared with the rest of America in a commercial called The Competition.

What that commercial will say or how it will be used to promote this particular bit of rather old and arcane news is to be determined, but we do know what’s behind the scenes. If you want to find out, you’ll hop on after the jump and check out the three-minute vid with director Jeff Zwart. Yes, that Jeff Zwart…

Drop Top Customs to unveil convertible Cadillac CTS at SEMA

DTC Convertible Cadillac CTS – Click above for image gallery

The shop behind the beautiful convertible Dodge Challenger that stole the spotlight at last year’s SEMA show is at it again. Drop Top Customs has announced that it will set about creating a topless version of the ever-sexy Cadillac CTS Coupe for this year’s aftermarket shindig. We’re not entirely sold on the thought of hacking the razor-sharp roof line from the coupe and replacing it with a folding soft top, but we’ll reserve judgment until after we see the final product in the flesh, er, sheetmetal.

DTC has been cranking out convertible versions of production hardtops for around 30 years, so the company knows what it’s doing when it sets to taking the plasma cutter to an otherwise unsullied vehicle. Last year, that infamous convertible Challenger actually walked away from SEMA with a design award from Chrysler itself, so chances are the new drophead CTS will have the fit and finish of a factory effort. Still, we’ve got to wonder just how many people are clamoring for a convertible Caddy these days. After all, there didn’t seem to be much pent-up demand for the XLR…

Cadillac CTS, Infiniti M models earn Top Safety Pick status from IIHS

Filed under: Safety, Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Hyundai, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has put a new crop of large luxury vehicles through its crash test gauntlet, and the Cadillac CTS and Infiniti M joined some impressive company in scoring a Top Safety Pick designation. The CTS and M clinched the highly regarded award by receiving the top score of “Good” in roof strength testing. To achieve the top score in rollover safety, a vehicle’s roof has to be able to support four times the weight of the entire vehicle.

The Top Safety Pick designation is handed out only to vehicles that received a “Good” score for all four IIHS crash tests while also featuring standard stability control to help avoid accidents altogether. The Cadillac and Infiniti join the BMW 5 Series, Lincoln MKS, Volvo S80, Hyundai Genesis and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class as Top Safety Pick winners.

Since large luxury vehicles cost so much and contain so many safety features, it’s not all that surprising that so many models aced IIHS testing. But not all vehicles passed the test with flying colors. The Lexus GS and Audi A6 managed only an “Acceptable” score in roof testing, while the aging Acura RL lagged behind the competition with a “Marginal” rating. Hit the jump to read over the IIHS presser.

Cadillac SRX scores Top Safety Pick from IIHS

Filed under: Safety, Crossover, Cadillac, Luxury

When it comes to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash rating system, earning a score of “Good” is the best any automaker can hope for. And if a vehicle receives a score of “Good” for front, side, rear and and rollover crash protection and the vehicle has standard electronic stability control that car, truck or SUV becomes an IIHS Top Safety Pick. The 2010 Cadillac SRX became the 15th midsize SUV to be awarded with the desirable designation after the hot-selling crossover passed the rollover crash protection test with flying colors. The SRX had already received a “Good” score for its performance in the other crash tests.

The current government standard for roof safety is that it needs to be able to support 1.5 times the overall vehicle weight. The roof of the SRX proved to be able to hold 4.14 times its weight, nearly tripling the standards required by the feds. The IIHS tests roof strength by pushing a metal plate against one corner of the roof at a constant rate of speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before the roof collapses by five inches is compared to the vehicle weight to determine the strength-to-weight ratio. Hit the jump to read over the IIHS presser.

HDLI: Cadillac Escalade top target for thieves

Filed under: Coupe, SUV, Truck, Cadillac, Ford, Infiniti, Luxury

The Highway Data Loss Institute has churned out its official list of vehicles with the highest and lowest insurance claims for theft. The study combines the rate of insurance claims per vehicle as well as the cost of those claims, helping companies that supply coverage determine exactly how much to charge us poor saps. The Cadillac Escalade took top honors this year with $146 in theft loss payments per insured vehicle, per year. On average, insurance companies pay out around $11,934 per theft claim when it comes to the Escalade with 10.8 of the SUVs stolen per 1,000 vehicles. That’s more than 10 times the theft rate of the vehicle with the lowest theft losses – the Volvo S80.

In fact, of the top 10 vehicles on the Highway Data Loss Institute’s list, six were of General Motors origin. How do the thieves get around the bad-guy battling OnStar vehicle immobilization? Easy. They load the coveted SUVs onto a flat bed and drive away.

The 2008-2009 Ford F-250 crew cab four-wheel drive took the silver when it came to vehicles with the highest theft loss, followed by the 2008-2009 Infiniti G37 coupe. Hit the jump to see if your vehicle’s on the list.
