VW dealer network to undergo “radical change” as brand ramps up

Volkswagen CEO Jonathan BrowningDealers across the U.S. have been in shrink mode for years, as auto sales have dropped to the point where many stores could no longer remain open. That trend should reverse itself by 2014, though, at least for Volkswagen, as that brand looks to improve its sales volume here in the States.

Wards Automotive reports that VW’s drive to hit 800,000 U.S. sales per year by 2018 will result in an expanded dealer-base. In the near term, VW is looking at evolutionary changes to its 588 U.S. dealers to handle increased volume, but VW CEO Jonathan Browning said “radical change” will be in order as sales really start to take off.

How many dealers represents “radical change?” Browning isn’t interested in forecasting based on the fact that he doesn’t know how healthy the U.S. auto industry will be in seven years. But Browning did talk about new products and technology during an interview at the Passat launch in Chattanooga, TN, and the chief executive sees a seven-passenger vehicle in our future. One option could be a new Microbus based off the Bulli concept from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. He also claims that 20 percent of Volkswagen’s overall volume in the U.S. will pack clean diesel tech. The oil-burning engines won’t be featured across the entire model lineup, but could make up significant volume for vehicles like the Jetta and Golf.

Report: Accounting change could net Ford $13-billion profit

Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Ford, Earnings/Financials

2011 Ford Mustang

Ford is looking to make an accounting change this year that would eliminate a valuation allowance from its books and net the company $10 to $13 billion in profits. The move shows that Ford is confident that it sustain its new-found profitability, after four straight years of operating losses from 2005 to 2009.

The valuation is held against deferred tax assets, which the company needed as it saw profits disappear. With the company making $9.3 billion in profits over the last two years, the valuation isn’t necessary any more.

When the move is made, Ford said it will record it as a “special item for the quarter,” to avoid a negative tax effect. Even after Ford gets the valuation allowance off its books, the company may still be able to operate tax-free until the end of the decade, as it is still eligible for tax breaks after $31.4 billion in losses from 2005-2009.

Changing tires while moving – Click above to watch video after the jump

Can you change a tire quickly? It doesn’t matter, because your skills fail to impress this crew of suicidal Saudi stunt drivers. No need for a jackstand when you have three friends, a long stretch of road and the ability to pilot a vehicle like one of the Duke boys.

While this stunt takes a lot of skill, and cojones far outweighing the curb weight of the vehicle involved, we checked the stupidity meter and it exploded in our hands. Click past the jump to see the most thrilling tire change you may ever witness.

Chicago 2011: 2012 Acura TL is the face of change… at least a little bit

Acura has yanked the sheets off of the latest take on its bread-and-butter TL at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. In the face of much criticism, the Japanese automaker’s stylists have set about taking some of the edge off of the sedan’s styling with a fresh front fascia that goes some way toward making the vehicle look more like a car and less like Picaso’s interpretation of one. The 2012 TL now wears shorter overhangs both front and rear, and the new look includes shedding the chrome trim from around the rear taillamps for a look that’s altogether more appetizing than the previous iteration.

A few changes have cropped up under the hood as well. Acura engineers managed to cut engine friction to increase fuel economy, and a new six-speed automatic transmission helps bump the final figures to 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. That’s an increase of three mpg highway over the five-speed automatic-equipped 2010 model. Fans of the third pedal need not fret, though. Acura says that buyers will still be able to snag their 2012 TL SH-AWD with the same six-speed manual setup that’s currently available.

Inside, TL Advance trim now comes with a blind-spot awareness system and ventilated heated and cooled seats, while the TL Tech boasts a 60-gig hard-drive based navigation and entertainment system. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

Mini Connected app will change music to suit driving

If you’ve used one of the athletic apps for the iPhone, you’re probably familiar with the feature that matches the music to your workout. You run faster, the system ups the BPM. Cycle slower and the tempo drops. Mini wants to do something similar with the Mini Connected system, and that’s just the tip of the interactive infotainment iceberg.

Mini Connected is the automaker’s integrated music and navigation system, which connects to a smattering of smartphones to stream music and data to the stereo. However, the iPhone and iPod are currently more deeply integrated into the system, including the introduction of the new iPod out functionality which displays Apple’s music player controls on the Mini’s center-mounted screen. But that’s nothing new and Mini wants to go deeper, so it’s releasing the Mini Connected iPhone/iPod touch app to increase the interaction.

The headlining Dynamic Music function plays tunes that have been exclusively composed for Mini and then adjusts the rhythm based on your driving style. Additionally, a web radio function allows users to listen to local radio stations independent of their location, and the app can be programmed to read RSS news feeds, supply Google local searches and send information from your browser to the Cooper’s display. Facebook and Twitter integration will also be included, while the “Minimalism Analyzer” provides advice on how to drive more efficiently.

Mini hasn’t outlined a timeframe on when the new app will be released, but it’s a few steps above and beyond what’s on offer from Ford’s Sync system – assuming it works as seamlessly as advertised. The one drawback: it’s currently only for Apple users, so Android, Blackberry, PalmOS and – any day now – Windows Phone 7 users are out in the cold for the time being. Get all the details in the press blast after the break.

First Drive: 2011 Nissan Leaf doesn’t change the game, just the players

We’ve met the Nissan Leaf before. First at its coming-out party in Japan, followed by an all-too-brief stint behind the wheel of a Versa-based prototype late last year. Now we’ve had a chance to sample Nissan’s first foray into the world of electric vehicles in production form and the automaker picked one of its most important markets – the heart of Silicon Valley – to give us some seat time.

If there’s any area ripe for early-EV adoption, it’s San Jose, CA. And during a quick test loop through the tight confines of Santana Row and a run through the city’s suburban surrounds, it’s obvious that the first mass-produced EV is officially ready for prime-time.

Follow the jump to continue.

FIM e-Power 2010: Last lap lead change at Mazda Raceway

Filed under: Motorsports, Motorcycle, Electric, Racing

Michael Czysz at the FIM e-Power International Championship at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

In racing, planning is everything. This point was proven once again as the bright yellow (Flying Banana, if you will) race machine from Lightning Motors held the lead of the e-Power International Championship until the very last few hundred feet. And then ran out of juice.

Sadly, for Lightning Motors at least, this slight miscalculation allowed the Flying Banana to be passed literally just feet ahead of the finish line by Michael Czysz, who took the win mounted on his own MotoCzysz E1pc electric race bike. For those keeping track, Czysz was 6.7 seconds behind at the start of the last lap.

Michael Barnes took second place on the Lightning Motors machine, followed by Thijs de Ridder aboard the Crystalite bike. Our congratulations to all of the riders!
