There’s always a little skepticism attached to Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates. Even though the agency adjusted its testing procedures in 2008 to help generate more realistic figures, buyers and experts seem to approach the mystical city/highway numbers with the general impression that figures have little bearing on what owners actually experience in day-to-day use. So it should be no surprise that when General Motors and the EPA announced that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco would hit 42 miles per gallon on the highway, a stink of disbelief filled our newsroom.

That kind of lofty highway fuel economy is typically relegated to hybrids, clean diesels and subcompacts that require an uncanny mastership of human origami to ferry four friends along – not roomy four-door compact sedans. Fortunately, GM was kind enough to turn us loose on a long stretch of Southern California interstate to put the fuel economy of the Cruze Eco to the test.

Chevrolet Super Bowl ad

Chevrolet Super Bowl ad – Click above to watch the video after the jump

General Motors is planning an all-out advertising assault on this year’s Super Bowl with a total of five ads spread throughout the game. The spots will focus on the Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze Eco, Silverado HD and, of course, the Volt. Each of the 30-second spots have a completely different feel, and at least a few of them will show up after Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers are done beating themselves to oblivion during the post-game coverage. GM is staying fairly tight-lipped about the plots surrounding the majority of the ads, but the company has been kind enough to let slip the Camaro spot ahead of time.

The clip features Bumblebee of Transformers fame going toe to toe with a car lot mascot. Spoiler alert: don’t put your money on the chipmunk.

The ad features one impressive donut with plenty of tire smoke and some fairly seamless CG for good measure. Hit the jump to take a look at the video for yourself and read the full press blast.

Production Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback coming to Geneva

Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

General Motors has confirmed that it will debut the final production version of the Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The original design was previewed by the five-door Cruze show car we saw in Paris last year, but we expect the completed car to look more like the design renderings that were filed at the European patent office in December, complete with front-end fittings more closely related to what we see on the Cruze sedan.

Oh, and just in case you forgot, the Cruze Hatchback has not been given the green light here in North America. A shame, since Ford’s new five-door Focus is just about to hit dealerships and Hyundai has promised us a hatchback version of its swoopy new Elantra. What gives, GM?

We’ll have the complete details live from Geneva in just a few weeks. For now, follow the jump for The General’s official press release.

All Convertible, Little Compromise

2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible – Click above for high-res image gallery

Chevrolet doesn’t need any help selling its Camaro. It handily throttled the Ford Mustang in sales last year despite only being able to offer customers a single coupe bodystyle compared to the Stang’s more expansive coupe, convertible and GT500 range. In fact, General Motors says the Camaro is jumping off of dealer lots with nearly no incentives and 90 percent retail sales. Still, buyers have been clamoring for a droptop version of the mighty Bowtie since the Camaro Convertible concept hit the scene in 2007. This year, The General has finally obliged by taking out the knife.

The history of the Camaro is littered with topless wonders that looked like a stack of cool cash while parked, yet most drove like a wet noodle when you stepped on their skinny pedals. The minds that pull the strings at GM have made it clear that in the coming years, what was once the king of the muscle car heap will turn its attention more toward the sports car crowd, and to that end, they’ve striven to deliver a Camaro Convertible capable of all of the same driving dynamics as the coupe. Have they pulled it off? We took to the streets of San Diego to find out.

This is not your typical review of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt

Gene Weingarten is not an automotive journalist. He is, however, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning writer for The Washington Post. And yet, despite limited automotive knowledge by his own admission, he’s written an excellent review of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

Weingarten admits he was predisposed to hate the Volt (and American cars in general), but his time behind the wheel didn’t jibe with those expectations. And it wasn’t even because the car apparently made him more attractive to members of the opposite sex (though we doubt that hurt its chances any).

Trust us on this: Go and read all five pages of Weingarten’s review of the Chevy Volt, then come back and tell us what you think.

Chevrolet Camaro SS Daytona 500 Pace Car

Spoliers and skirts and lights, oh my! Chevrolet is preparing one highly customized Camaro SS to pace the upcoming Daytona 500, and it appears that the Bowtie brand has thrown every accessory at its disposal to see what would stick.

At the rear, there’s a ducktail spoiler the likes of which we haven’t seen on a Camaro since the late 1970s. The profile view is dominated by a ground-effects package that makes the pony car’s already slab-sided, Coke-bottle appearance even more pronounced. We also note a set of wheels reminiscent of the units fitted by Hurst. And it’s easy to miss the new chin spoiler and slightly modified grille.

The most noticable updates, though, are surely the lights, which have to be bright enough for the entire field at Daytona to spot them. There’s an aerodynamic light bar up top and a pair of orangey-yellow lamps out back that the spy photographer says could practically be seen from space. See for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

Barrett-Jackson 2011: Chevrolet offers up a drop-top Camaro set to lead the Indy 500 field *Update: w/video

Chevrolet is taking to the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale stage to auction off a special drop-top. The first of 50 limited-edition cars, this 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car will cross the stage before heading to lead the field at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

The orange and white color combination matches that of the Indy-fied 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, which has since become a collectors item of its own. As far as we know, the Camaro ‘Vert will be a 2012 model, but everything here at Barrett-Jackson is listing this as a 2011.

Proceeds from the sale of this limited-edition Camaro will go the David Foster Foundation, which supports families with children in need of live-saving organ transplants. Charity cars have gone through the roof at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction and we would expect nothing different from this one.

The Camaro Convertible doesn’t have an official listing page, as it was something of a surprise for bidders, but you can watch Speed’s live online coverage here. Are you playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game? If not, test your auction pricing mettle by guessing what a series of featured vehicles will end up bringing at the auction block – you could end up winning a prize, like an Apple iPad. Enjoy!

*Update: The final gavel price? $225,000. Click past the jump to watch this Camaro cross the auction block.

Chevrolet certainly has created a few limited-edition vehicles in its time, and you can add this 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Le Mans Racing Z06 to that list. How limited is it exactly? The VIN plate reads #001… of one.

Built to celebrate 50 years of Corvettes racing at Le Mans, this special Z06 wears special door numbers, a 50th Anniversary seal on the B-pillar, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes and massive 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels. Under the hood sits a 7.0-liter LS7 engine producing 550 horsepower, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Inside, the car bears the signatures of both Dick Thompson and Dick Guldstrand.

All proceeds from the sale of this one-off Vette will go to the National Corvette Museum. Check out the official auction page at Barrett-Jackson and watch Speed’s live online coverage here.

*Update: Video of the Corvette crossing the block is available after the jump.

2011 Chevrolet Camaro sets stage for Baldwin-Motion return

Baldwin-Motion is back with the 2011 Motion Camaro – Click above for high-res image gallery

DeNooyer Chevrolet in Albany, New York is in love with the new Camaro. It also loves the history of the model line, especially when dealers and customizers got their hands on the cars. We’ve already seen DeNooyer team up with Redline Motorsports to bring us their COPO HTR Camaro. Now the two have teamed up with Joel Rosen to resurrect the Baldwin-Motion Camaros.

In 1966, Joel Rosen started up his Motion Performance shop and partnered with Baldwin autos to produce a handful of boosted Chevy products. The Baldwin-Motion team offered Novas, Biscaynes, Chevelles, Corvettes and, of course, Camaros. The original Baldwin-Motion cars were available in SS (425 horsepower) or Phase III versions (500 hp and up). Joel Rosen stood so firmly behind his Motion sports cars that he provided a written guarantee stating they were capable of running the quarter-mile in 11.50 seconds and hitting a trap speed of 120 miles per hour. Not one Baldwin-Motion owner ever returned a car.

Now Joel Rosen is partnering up with DeNooyer Chevrolet and Redline Motorsports to usher in a new era of Motion Camaros. Five special edition cars are available with a choice of either an aluminum LS7 427 or LSX 454. The Motion SS-427 and SS-454 make 525 and 550 horsepower, respectively. Both versions wear custom Motion touches like graphics, seat inserts, headrests and special badges. For the Phase III cars, power is upped to 600 hp for the Phase III-427 while the Phase III-454 pumps out 625 hp. Phase III cars get further upgraded intake manifolds, a special engine management system, custom Motion aerodynamic body pieces and more custom touches to the interior. The fifth car in the lineup is the Motion Phase III 427-SC, and that SC stands for supercharged. Output is pushed to a pavement pummeling 800 hp and the 427-SC receives forged internals as well as upgraded Brembo brakes and suspension components.

The 2011 Motion Camaro cars will all be built to order, wear unique VINs and show off Joel Rosen’s signature. Hop the jump to read the full press-release and be sure to get a look at the Motion Camaro in the gallery below.

Officially Official: Chevrolet replaces Daewoo name in Korea

Filed under: Chevrolet, GM, South Korea, Daewoo

Chevrolet Camaro in Korea Chevrolet Camaro in Korea – Click above for high-resolution image

There once was a time when Daewoo was one of the biggest companies in South Korea. It was larger than both LG and Samsung, and second only to Hyundai. But these days the name is all but gone.

The Korean government disbanded the Daewoo Group in 1999. At that point GM already owned about half of Daewoo Motors, a stake that has varied over time. Ever since, the General has used Daewoo’s resources to develop and produce a range of vehicles sold under other GM divisions, principally Chevrolet, which has already replaced Daewoo in many markets to become GM’s principal global brand. (The globalization of Chevrolet has escalated to such an extent that, over the course of last year, somewhere in the world, a Chevy was being sold every 7.4 seconds.)

One of the few exceptions has been in Korea itself, where the Daewoo name still means something. But that something isn’t necessarily good, and so GM is phasing out the name even in the brand’s own domestic market. The development has been a long time coming, and will encompass both the cars themselves and the company that builds them. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. is officially changing its name to GM Korea Co by the end of the quarter.

In an odd bit of history repeating, the company was called GM-Korea once before, after Detroit stepped in to take over half the company from Toyota, which had collaborated with what was then known as Shinjin Motor until 1972. Full details of the announcement in the press release after the jump.
