Report: Nardelli almost sold Chrysler to U.S. for $1

Robert Nardelli Chrysler

Even more terrifying tales of the automotive bailout are emerging from Steven Rattner’s new book. CNN Money reports that, according to the text, Chrysler had an even rougher go of things than General Motors. Rattner, who served as the head of the automotive task force, writes that after congress failed to give Chrysler the $7 billion in funding that the company originally asked for, executives began to scramble to find other ways to keep the operation afloat. That includes Pentastar boss Bob Nardelli asking the United States Treasury to force General Motors to buy Chrysler. After it was determined that the vast amounts of overlap between the two companies would make a merger impossible, things got even more bizarre.

According to Rattner’s book, Steve Feinberg of Chrysler parent company Cerberus Capital offered the carmaker to the treasury department for $1. The treasury thought the offer was a joke, partially because Feinberg made the suggestion to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson during a 2:00 AM phone call. Less than a month later, President Bush signed off on $17.4 billion in TARP money for GM and Chrysler. Thanks for the tip, Ollie!

Maserati to base upcoming junior Quattroporte on next Chrysler 300?

1989 Chrysler TC by Maserati

As excitement and anticipation mount for the arrival of a new “entry-level” sedan from Maserati, so do the rumors. The new model, expected to slot in below the current Quattroporte, has been the subject of much conjecture and speculation, but the latest hits a little closer to home.

According to reports, the junior QP could share its underpinnings with the next Chrysler 300C. This in contrast with previous reports that the Trident marque was looking to develop a new platform for the model, a move that would be decidedly more expensive for a Fiat/Chrysler empire already spread too thin. (Closer collaboration is expected between the Chrysler and Lancia divisions, which could also lead to a next-gen 300-based successor to the discontinued Lancia Thesis.)

As sources point out, this wouldn’t be the first time that Maserati and Chrysler have gotten into bed with each other. Close ties between onetime Chrysler chief Lee Iacocca and Alejandro de Tomaso (of the eponymous sportscar company that once owned Maserati) led to the disastrous badge-whoring exercise known as the Chrysler TC by Maserati (pictured above). If the latest reports come to fruition, we’d certainly hope the outcome would be in a different league altogether.

Marchionne: Chrysler profit not likely for 2010

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Chrysler, Earnings/Financials, Fiat

Sergio Marchionne harbors no illusions about Chrysler being in the black for 2010. The Detroit News reports the Chrysler chairman and Fiat CEO stated flat out that a net profit in 2010 isn’t likely during an August 23rd tour of a Toledo Jeep plant. Despite recent reports of operating profits from Chrysler, there’s still tremendous cost associated with loan interest payments and a lineup of moribund product to turn over. Add to the mix the reintroduction of Fiat automobiles to the U.S. market, and you’ve got an outlook that’s best described as “challenging.”

Still, Marchionne told U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, also in attendance, that Chrysler is “ahead of plan” during the tour. That plan includes paying back its $12 billion in governmental loans and launching the Fiat 500 in North America. A meeting on August 30th will lay out the requirements for dealers interested in Fiat stores, and Marchionne reports strong interest.

Dealers that choose to take on Fiat must create standalone showrooms for the brand, requiring significant investment, though there’s little overlap between Fiat and Chrysler product lines to muddy sales efforts. Other rumors that Marchionne dodged were talk of a Jeep Liberty-based SUV to be built in Toledo, and whether or not an Alfa Romeo sedan will be built in Brampton, Ontario.

First thing we did after arriving at the 2010 Woodward Dream Cruise was head out to the various automaker displays on Woodward Avenue. And, as you can see, that includes Chrysler. Included amongst the normal and expected 300s, Wranglers and Ram Trucks, we spotted a couple gems that are well worth your consideration.

Take, for instance, this Ram-bodied monster truck. Naturally, it’s crushing an import from the ’80s… We also got a kick out of the little slot car racing track set up to keep the kiddies (and kiddies at heart) happy in spite of the rain. Speaking of which, sorry about all the drops on the cars… sadly, unavoidable.

We went ahead and assembled the best shots from Chrysler’s officially confiscated parking lot. See the lot of ’em in our high-res image gallery below, and of course, stay tuned for lots more coverage from the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Check out our livestream for a live view of Woodward as the classics drive by.

Chrysler chooses 600 dealerships for possible Fiat franchises

Fiat 500

The Chrysler Group is only a few months away from bringing the Fiat brand back to the United States, starting with the launch of the too-cute 500 later this year. The automaker will be holding a Fiat Experience event in Detroit at the end of August, and around 600 dealers from around the country have been invited to attend.

These 600 dealers are located in cities where Chrysler is planning to have Fiat franchises – a total of 119 different markets around the country. The Fiat Experience program will give dealers a detailed overview of Chrysler’s exact plans for the brand in the U.S., and dealers will be allowed to submit proposals for snagging a Fiat franchise through mid-September.

No, not all of these 600 dealers will be approved for Fiat franchises, and Chrysler will be announcing its final list of Fiat locations in the fourth quarter of 2010. Hit the jump to see the current list of market considerations to find out if a Fiat dealer might be heading to a city near you.

Spy Shots: 2012 Chrysler 300 is more than a nosejob

The next Chrysler 300 – Click above for high-res image gallery

The next Chrysler 300 has had some chiseling and wedging applied to its current stoic proportions. The perfectly horizontal shoulder line now sweeps up from a lower front end into a shorter decklid. The nearly perpendicular front and rear on the 2010 have also been reshaped, particularly in the rear. Detail-wise, only the mirrors appear to have carried over, with what looks like new headlight hardware in an angled design, LED taillights in back, an integrated exhaust treatment and new rear window glass. Get a closer look in the gallery of high-res photos below while we wait to see what magic has been done to the inside…

GM follows Chrysler into the lifetime warranty business… with Vauxhall

Filed under: Car Buying, Europe, Vauxhall

That’s right. General Motors has taken the bold step of offering a lifetime warranty with all new Vauxhall vehicles it sells. Not surprisingly, the warranty is non-transferable and is only good for the first 100,000 miles on the odometer – apparently their definition of ‘lifetime’ is a bit different from that of Chrysler. Unlike their crosstown rivals, however, the guarantee covers most of the vehicle’s major systems, including the engine, transmission, steering, brake and electrical components. Not too shabby. The company is even looking into a way to offer the remainder of the warranty to second owners, which shows a pretty sizable amount of confidence in the company’s build quality as of late.

Interestingly enough, we haven’t heard a peep about similar programs for Vauxhall’s twin, Opel, or any of The General’s other deserving children. Here’s hoping that GM is using the Vauxhall warranty as a testbed for the rest of the family. Few things help move cars quicker than the peace of mind that comes along with the knowledge that the dealer will take care of any woe you have down the line. Similarly generous warranties have helped both Hyundai and Kia establish themselves here in the States, and they’d probably go a long way towards rebuilding consumer consideration. A bigger and perhaps more interesting question is, will this same guarantee apply to the forthcoming Vauxhall Ampera?

Hit the jump for a look at the official press release. Thanks for the tip, Lesbert!

Spy Shots: 2011 Chrysler Town & Country nip/tuck spotted

Filed under: Spy Photos, Minivan/Van, Chrysler, Dodge

Toyota and Honda may be improving the images of their minivans, but we mustn’t forget about the company that started it all: Chrysler. The very first Dodge Grand Caravan went on sale 27 years ago, and through all of the ups and downs that the automaker has faced over the years (especially in recent times), the Grand Caravan and Town & Country twins have always been a mainstay.

The current pair of minivans was introduced for the 2008 model year, so it’s only fitting that a slight mid-cycle refresh is on deck, and the folks at The Detroit News have snagged some spy shots of a Town & Country prototype out testing. In addition to modest exterior updates that include things like LED taillamps and a reworked rear bumper, expect Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 to be slotted under the hood. Combined with a six-speed automatic transmission, this should account for a healthy improvement in fuel economy, not to mention power.

What’s most important for minivan shoppers, though, is interior refinement, and the 2011 T&C is expected to get a host of cabin upgrades. More comfortable seats, higher-quality materials and an integrated center console will be on hand, and we’d expect the nifty Stow ‘N Go and Swivel ‘N Go seating configurations to carry over, as well. Look for similar improvements to make their way into the Dodge Grand Caravan, as well. Thanks for the tip, Aaron!

Marchionne: Chrysler earned operating profit in Q2

Chrysler may be more than a little short on new products right now, but that apparently isn’t stopping Team Pentastar from bolstering its bottom line. The Detroit Free Press reports that Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters that Chrysler managed to produce black ink between April and June. We won’t know exactly how much money Detroit-based automaker pulled in until August.

In any case, this counts as phenomenal news for the struggling automaker, which went through bankruptcy proceedings during the second quarter of 2009. Chrysler also posted an operating profit of $143 million in the first quarter, though one-time costs meant an overall loss of $197 million at that time.

While we’ll have to wait a couple more week for Chrysler’s official Q2 numbers, Fiat has already posted its results for the quarter. The Italian automaker managed a $146 million profit bolstered by a 12.5 percent increase in revenue. Global sales reportedly grew by 6.7 percent versus the same quarter in 2009, even with a 21.5 percent drop in sales in Italy. Fiat’s domestic market sales were negatively impacted due to the end of the country’s Cash for Clunkers-style program.
