BMW Super Bowl Ad

BMW was one of the few companies to keep its Super Bowl advertising plans to itself until kick off time, but the Roundel came to the game packing two 30-second spots. The company said it wanted to get two messages across to Americans: that its diesels are cleaner and more powerful than ever and that the German manufacturer is continuing to invest in America even as the economy struggles to recover. In order to make that happen, BMW enlisted the vocal talents of actor Chris Pine (of Star Trek fame) for the two spots. Pine is now the official voice of BMW advertising here in the States.

The first ad is clearly aimed at distinguishing the 335d from the American perception of diesel – sluggish old Volvo wagons, rough-idling Mercedes-Benz sedans and soot-spewing trucks and busses. The second ad focuses on the company’s efforts in Spartanburg, South Carolina, including producing every X3 on the planet. Hit the jump to check out both spots as well as the full press release.

GM Super Bowl Ad

Chevrolet Silverado HD Super Bowl ad – Click above to watch video after the jump

General Motors has gone ahead and saved us all the agony of waiting until the Super Bowl this Sunday to see all five of the company’s new ads. The automaker has officially yanked the veil of secrecy off of the spots well before kickoff, which means you can check them all out for yourself after the jump. The spots feature the Chevrolet Silverado HD, Cruze, Cruze Eco, Volt and Camaro in some very clever marketing. While we’re big fans of the Camaro “Miss Evelyn” spot that we saw earlier this week, the new clip for the Silverado HD is no less grin-inducing.

This year looks to be a good one for fans of clever advertising. With automakers from Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen to GM and Audi jumping into the fun, the commercial breaks are almost bound to be more fun than the actual game itself. Click past the jump to see the slew of Chevrolet ads before anyone else and to check out the press release.

General Motors is back and back big in this year’s Super Bowl. The automaker will have eight 30-second ads in and around the game, including the pre-game show.

“We’re looking to win the day,” says Chevy marketing director Chris Perry

GM marketing chief Joel Ewanick, who came to GM in April 2010 from Hyundai, with a short six-week stint at Nissan in between, is big on big media venues. He likes the Super Bowl, Academy Awards, Olympics, Presidential debates and the like.

Don’t look for big yucks, though, which is a mainstay of Super Bowl ad themes. All of the ads will be for Chevrolet, with ads by San Francisco ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, which launched the “Chevy Runs Deep” campaign last fall.

Ewanick told the agency to focus on telling stories that convey information and product benefits about Chevy’s newest and most important vehicles – the Volt, Cruze and Silverado pickup. There are two ads running in pre-game, five within the game and one during the post game show.

“We’re looking to win the day,” said Chevy marketing director Chris Perry. Among auto marketers, Chevy will be competing against Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, BMW, Kia and Chrysler. Toyota, Honda and Ford, which have bought time in the past, are sitting this year out.

Hyundai Elantra Super Bowl

Hyundai Elantra Super Bowl commercials – Click above to watch after the jump

Hyundai has purchased no less than four 30-second spots during this year’s Super Bowl for what we can only imagine is more money than we’ll make in three lifetimes. Two of those commercials will highlight the hot-selling Sonata, while the other two have been reserved to get the word out about Hyundai’s redesigned 2011 Elantra.

In fact, the Elantra is part of a much larger marketing campaign that kicks off this weekend with new commercials being aired during the NFL’s AFC Championship game. Thing is, you might not be able to tell these commercials are for a Hyundai because they’ll be unbranded and not mention the company or car at all.

This, my friends, is how corporations do viral marketing (Hint: You might not want to tell us that you’re doing something viral, because then it’s not viral anymore). Without mentioning the product they’re trying to sell, these pre-Super Bowl commercials being aired during the AFC Championship game, along with more ads in print and on the web, will highlight the conspiracy to brainwash compact car buyers to accept poor design and a dearth of innovation in exchange for practicality and reliability. Then, during the Super Bowl, Hyundai’s two Elantra-related commercials will reveal what the rest of the unbranded marketing campaign was really trying to sell. That is, the Elantra. Clever, except for the part where we’re told beforehand what the mystery commercials are all about.

Check out the Elantra’s two Super Bowl commercials for yourself after the jump.

Videos: New Mini commercials crank up the weirdness

Mini vs Monster Teaser

Mini vs Monster Teaser – Click above to watch video after the jump

Brace yourselves, friends. Things are about to get a little strange. Mini has set about creating a 3D film titled Mini vs. Monster about, well… we don’t know what it’s about. We assume there’s probably a Mini in there somewhere, and there’s a pretty good chance that a monster of some variety plays a role, too. But beyond that, our guess is as good as yours. Mini has been so kind as to release three teasers for the films, though none of the trio serve to shed any light on the content of the film at all.

That won’t stop us from sharing them with you, though. The good news is that you won’t need any pesky 3D glasses to watch the three short YouTube clips after the jump. Supposedly, the trifecta of weirdness use depth of field trickery to give us all an idea of what the 3D flick will bring to the table. Consider us intrigued. Hit the jump to take a look.

Hyundai's Holiday Pomplamoose ads

Hyundai Holidays Pomplamoose ads – click above to watch video after the jump

Have you been digging the fun takes on classic Christmas songs in the “Hyundai Holidays” commercials? Meet Pomplamoose, the musical duo that stars in a series of Hyundai commercials alongside some of the company’s vehicles.

This isn’t the first time Pomplamoose’s unique vocal stacks and arrangements have been used in a car ad, their version of “Mr. Sandman” was used in a Toyota Avalon spot, but the Hyundai commercials are unusual for featuring Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn as prominently as the cars. In fact, the Hyundai commercials are consistent in style with the “regular” videos Pomplamoose has done. The coolest thing (besides the fun instrumentation) is that the ads were shot in the band’s garage. Young Yngwie Malmsteens practicing their minor pentatonic scales now have hope of being discovered without ever leaving the house! Check out the story behind the commercials and see the spots after the jump.

Video: Lincoln hires a Mad Man for new commercials

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Crossover, Lincoln, Celebrities, Luxury

Mad Men’s John Slattery, Lincoln’s new pitchman. Follow the jump to watch the new TV spot.

Lincoln wants everyone in TV land to know about its freshened model lineup. To grab their attention, they’ve gone with a heavy hitter from a pretty popular ad agency to shill the 2011 MKX: Roger Sterling, from Sterling Cooper Draper Price. OK, fine… not Roger Sterling, but John Slattery, the actor who portrays him on AMC’s Mad Men.

Slattery will plug the new “Smarter than Luxury” campaign, which launches during coverage of the Ryder Cup golf tournament. The focus of the ads is to highlight the technology and craftsmanship that are put into each new Lincoln vehicle. The TV spots will be backed up by a full print campaign as well, highlighting the 2011 Lincoln MKX and the MKZ hybrid.

Mad Men is a huge hit, so it’s a no-brainer for Lincoln to tap into that popularity. Mercedes-Benz has already signed Jon Hamm (a.k.a. Mad Men’s Don Draper) as the new voice-man for its commercials. Hop the jump to see Slattery pitch the latest from Lincoln.

The woman who tracks down real customers for car commercials [w/ video]

Danya Solomon

Danya Solomon helps manufacturers find customer testimonials – Click above to watch video after the jump

The testimonial is one of advertising’s oldest weapons. It’s a simple formula: If someone spent his or her hard-earned money on a product and lived to tell about it, chances are it will be good enough for you. But where do advertising companies come up with the jokers that we see splashed all over our television screens? It turns out that they look to one individual with a knack for finding people who are especially loyal to a specific brand or product. Her name is Danya Solomon.

Solomon is responsible for rounding up the everyday Joes and Janes we’ve seen on ads from Ford and Toyota lately. She spends her days scouring the internet, standing in parking lots and busting down pool-hall doors to find consumers who are passionate about the products they buy. The next time you see an average atomic family stand up and profess their love for a sedan, chances are Solomon had something to do with bringing them to the small screen. Hit the jump to see a few of the commercials she helped cast.
