Mazda Clemson Deep Orange 3 Concept Car

There are school projects, and then there’s the Mazda Deep Orange 3 Concept Car, a one-off built by Clemson University automotive engineering students and designed by Frederick Naaman from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Clemson students unveiled the chassis at the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas, although this is the first showing of the car fully clothed.

Sporting a unique hybrid powertrain that can automatically switch between front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive. A gas-powered engine handles the fronts, while the rears are powered by an electric motor and a battery pack. The Deep Orange 3 also has an unusual three-plus-three layout, making it a much cooler version of your parent’s old Vista Cruiser. The exterior sheetmetal clearly follows Mazda’s established design language, and looks like it could easily pass for a five-door version of the Shinari Concept. It really is a great looking vehicle.

The Deep Orange 3 was part of Clemson’s graduate-level auto engineering program, and is a regular partnership between the east coast school and the Pasadena-based design college’s students. Clemson, Art Center and Mazda will be showing the Deep Orange 3 at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, MI, from August 5 to August 8. The fourth generation 2012 Subaru Impreza has arrived, and to paraphrase Huey Lewis, the first thing you might notice is that it’s hip to be square… er. Underneath its skin, the new Impreza says a few things that Americans aren’t so used to – nor so fond of – hearing, like the fact that it has a smaller-displacement engine with less horsepower.

If that’s the step backward, though, there are more than two steps forward: It’s lighter, faster, more frugal, stiffer, nicer inside, has a better suspension and more interior room, all the while being the same size as the previous generation. Said Subaru Production Line Manager James Todd, “it’s all upside.”

We’ll let you decide that. But in the meantime…

Porsche buffs go searching for great German beer… deep in the heart of Texas?

Texas beer run roadtrip in Porsches

A good roadtrip needs a few items for success; great people, interesting destinations and, of course, the right vehicles. We can’t vouch for the people on a personal level in this tale, but Autoweek took on a Texas roadtrip and seems to have gotten the ingredients just right. How do six tuned Porsches, 800 miles and four breweries sound? As long as the drinking is done when the driving is finished (which of course it was), then you would be correct to say it sounds like heaven on earth.

Autoweek’s Jeff Bolton embarked on a quest for good German beer, using good German sports cars to shuttle him around the Great State of Texas. Starting in Dallas, the crew moves about until they end up in Shiner, Texas, where they chat with long-time brewmaster Jimmy Mauric.

If roadtrips were eligible for awards, this Texas Porsche beer run would be an early front-runner for Best of 2011. Head over to Autoweek to read about the trip, and be sure to check out the video as well.

Report: New slogan ‘Chevy runs deep’ coming this fall [w/poll]

Chevy Bowtie

General Motors wants you to know that, um… Chevy runs deep. We won’t pretend to know exactly what that means but we’re preparing ourselves to get used to hearing it. Apparently, it’s a new slogan that The General plans to use for marketing purposes starting this fall for the Chevrolet brand, though it won’t be used for all advertisements and won’t be attached to the Volt.

We feel the need to point out that this scheme runs exactly opposite from what the previous marketing executives had in mind for the Golden Bowtie, namely that those working for the company always call it ‘Chevrolet’ in lieu of the more slang ‘Chevy.’ But that was under the previous administration, which was recently replaced by Joel Ewanick and Chris Perry.

Ewanick and Perry are said to have formed the slogan with help from Goody, Silverstein and Partners, which was awarded the Chevrolet marketing account after the brand’s short stint with Publicis Worldwide and a 91-year relationship with Campbell-Ewald.

What do you think? Is this new slogan a winner? Is it better than the last few attempts by the brand to reinvent its marketing material in the States?
