Thanks to Autoblog reader Jose Rosario, we can now put the speculation to rest – the 2011 Dodge Charger will indeed receive a new full-width taillamp treatment that echoes that of its two-door Challenger kin. Rosario informs us that these spy shots were taken in Puerto Rico on the set of The Fast and the Furious Five, the latest installment of the durable Vin Diesel street racing franchise.

According to Rosario, the filming appears to be using at least one prototype of the new Charger, “because it has the sides of the current model but has the new front and they added the new rear which light up all in LED lights.” The film crew is also using more complete 2011 models, all of which are dressed up as police cars. The cars were used in a chase scene in which two current-model in a matte black finish pull a bank vault along the street, pursued by the Brazilian police cars (Even though the filming is taking place in Puerto Rico, the movie is set in Brazil). Rosario sadly reports that the last scene filmed the day these images were taken were of a current model Charger rear-ending a 2011 model.

Rosario managed to not only get shots of the new taillamps and well-integrated dual exhausts, but also some shots of the front end, which he says looks “more aggressive,” including more snout-like grille, new hood, subtly but completely redone headlamps and a revised lower fascia.

As if that weren’t enough, our man in PR also scored a shot of the 2011 model’s interior, which reveals a much more cohesive look. A new three-spoke steering wheel with redundant audio controls beckons, as does what appears to be a start button. The gauge binnacle eschews the four nacelles of the current car for a more unified cluster that’s marked out by a liberal helping of silvery trim and vertically oriented air vents bookend a new infotainment screen. Immediately below the screen, the Charger maintains its simple three-knob HVAC controls (albeit redone), and a step down from there is the CD slot. In the center console, a gated PRNDL surrounded by what looks like faux carbon-fiber trim. All-in-all, it looks like a massive improvement over the dour and workmanlike instrument panel of the outgoing Dodge.

What do you think – will the reborn Dodge Charger and its Chrysler 300 twin offer enough changes to rekindle your interest? Check out our images in the high-res gallery below, and then drop your fellow reader a line in Comments. Thanks for the pics, Rosario!

Will the 2011 Charger wear a new Dodge emblem? [w/poll]

New Dodge Logo for 2011Take a close look at the entire lineup of 2009 and 2010 Dodge cars and trucks and you’ll notice one thing they all have in common: the Dodge emblem is represented as a Ram’s head. So what’s the problem? While you could spend hours debating the merits of its recent strategy, the Chrysler Mothership has chosen to separate the Dodge brand into separate car and truck entities, and the newly launched Ram Truck brand will soldier on using that same Ram Head. Which means Dodge needs a new identity.

The first step Chrysler took to create a new corporate identity for Dodge was a new logo that will be used in marketing materials, but it won’t serve as an actual emblem on the vehicles. There’s plenty of online speculation as to what Dodge will use as its next emblem, or if it will in fact choose to go… um, naked. So far, all the spy shots of 2011 Dodge models have been seen sans logo or emblem, sporting only the Dodge name spelled out with individual chrome lettering.

So, what does all of this mean? Well… we really have no idea. But we’re interested in hearing what you all have to say. Take a good look at the potential new emblem on the right and then take part in our entirely unscientific poll below.

2011 Dodge Charger’s rump revealed on a t-shirt?

Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Performance, Dodge, Design/Style

It’s entirely possible. The crowd at the Mopar Nationals last weekend noticed something odd about the T-shirts handed out for the event. Parked among the usual suspects of Plymouth/Chrysler/Dodge lore sat a car that few folk recognized. It just might be the next-generation Dodge Charger. The internets have been aflame for awhile with word that the company’s big four-door would get a version of the rear light bar seen on the Challenger, and if the drawing on the shirt is any indication, it looks like those rumors might be true.

We’re not exactly sure who was behind penning the design for the T-shirt, but it seems unlikely that the gurus at Dodge would be so absent minded as to feed the Mopar hungry crowd at the Nationals a snippet of future product design. Even if the car in on the shirt is a figment of someone’s imagination, it looks plenty sharp to us – and that’s parked next to a Superbird. Thanks for the tip, FuzzyFish!

Reader Spy: Are you the next Dodge Charger SRT8?

2011 Dodge Charger prototype

2011/2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 prototype – click above for high-res image gallery

It’s no secret that Chrysler is unleashing redesigned versions of the 300 and Dodge Charger sedans this Fall and we’ve seen numerous images of them prowling the streets of suburban Detroit in recent months. Now another of Autoblog’s eagle-eyed readers, Marty M., has dropped us a note to let us know that he had captured what appears to be the new SRT8 version of the Charger.

We’re assuming this is the high-output Charger based on the size of the wheels and rear deck appendage, along with the depth of the front air dam. The freshly contoured flanks are visible under the camo, but we can’t quite tell if there is a new piece of glass at the trailing edge of the rear doors. The new SRT8 engine is expected to grow from the current 6.1-liters to 6.4-liters with at least 450 horsepower, and shooter Marty tells us it sounds very much how a big V8 ought to. It isn’t known if the high-performance SRT version of the next Charger will debut alongside its lesser linemates for model year 2011, or if it will hang out until it can earn a 2012 designation. Either way, it’s time to get excited.

Animated Dodge vs. PETA commercial dispute – Click above to watch the video after the break

Animated news. It’s just such a novel idea that we simply can’t believe it has taken so long to become mainstream. Well, mainstream if you happen to live in Taiwan, that is. Here in the States, we’re still dealing with old-school news anchors that actually read us the stories from pieces of – get this – paper. How quaint.

Fortunately, we’re not quite so behind the times when it comes to the Internet, so it’s none too difficult to find Taiwan’s animated news gems to watch in awe till our hearts are content. This latest little animation from Next Media Animation covers the recent spat between Dodge and PETA. Surely you remember the invisible monkey commercial, right? If not, click here to refresh your memory.

Still with us? Good. Now click past the break to see it all play out in glorious Taiwanese animated goodness. Pay special attention to the facial expressions of the fictitious PETA folk. Pure brilliance.

2011 Dodge Durango name confirmed?

2011 Dodge Durango teaser site test

2011 Dodge Durango teaser site (test version) – Click above for high-res image gallery

Magnum? Durango? There’s been plenty of banter about which nameplate Dodge’s new unibody SUV will ultimately wear, but now it seems we can put the debate to rest. At least two Autoblog readers have stumbled across the test version of the forthcoming 2011 Dodge Durango teaser website. Not only is “Durango” in the test URL, but “2011 Durango” is in the page’s title tags, and the landing page of Dodge’s test site lists it as an upcoming model. (Note to Chrysler: if you want to keep this sort of thing under wraps, don’t use a public-facing test subdomain.)

The teaser site itself is fairly typical. Visitors can page through several close-up images, join a mailing list, and spread the news via social media. In fact, the Facebook share feature reveals the teaser site’s eventual production URL. Finally, the website appears to confirm that the Durango will be sold as a 2011 model and not a 2012 as has been speculated. Our favorite part of the test teaser site, however, is the embedded audio. The music currently being used as a placeholder/audio test is the Benny Hill theme.

With both the 2011 Dodge Durango and the 2011 Ford Explorer now on unibody platforms, it’ll be interesting to how consumers perceive the two vehicles. While Ford is pushing the Explorer as an SUV rather than a crossover, the new Durango’s Jeep lineage (it shares its basic architecture with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, remember) could give it a significant advantage among those looking for a “real” SUV. Thanks to Matt and Bored for the tips!

Video: No (invisible) monkeys were harmed in the making of this Dodge commercial

Dodge’s monkey… now you see it, now you don’t – Click above to watch the video after the break

Ah yes. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. We here at Autoblog happen to be all for the ethical treatment of animals. And we’re people… allegedly. But we’re certainly not all fully in tune with the fine men and women that make up PETA. And we also happen to think that PETA sometimes goes a wee bit too far in their efforts to make man equal to beast… or is that the other way around?

In any case, PETA was apparently none too pleased by a recent commercial from Dodge touting a new promotion that included a chimpanzee named Suzie and a purposefully deadpan narrative from Michael C. Hall. In response to pressure from PETA, Dodge digitally altered its advertisement. Interestingly enough, it got way funnier in the process. Kudos, Dodge.

You’re going to want to click on past the break to see the before and after videos… trust us. You’ll also find the official letter from PETA asking Dodge to discontinue all the *ahem* monkey business. Sorry, couldn’t help ourselves.

Dodge releases 2010 Mopar Challenger pics

2010 Dodge Mopar ’10 Challenger – Click above for high-res image gallery

Good news if you’ve been itching to get a look at something other than a renderings and grainy detail shots of the Mopar ’10 Challenger. Dodge has just dropped a hefty batch of photos of the model in full. Supposedly, the company is only building 500 examples of the car, each of with a price tag of $39,000 if you want a six-speed manual. If you can live your life with a slushbox, Dodge will give you the car for $38,000. For that kind of coin, you get a raucous hood scoop and your choice of three accent colors.

Likewise, the interior will also wear a slew of new niceties, including Mopar logos embroidered in the side bolsters of both front seats, matching thread accents and a new steering wheel. Unfortunately, the car is based off of an R/T model, so don’t expect to see the heavy-breathing 6.1-liter V8 from the Challenger SRT8 under the hood.

2012 Dodge Durango (or is that Magnum?) revealed on Twitter

Filed under: Spy Photos, SUV, Crossover, Chrysler, Dodge

Ah, the magic of the interwebs. Chrysler has yet to officially reveal the 2012 Dodge Durango (which could yet be birthed under the name Magnum), but we’ve come across this rather nonchalant camera phone photo taken by one of the Twitterati.

Judging from the Durango/Magnum spy shots that have come through our hands, the exterior design hasn’t changed much during the SUV-turned-crossover’s development. If we’re honest, the design is a little milquetoast, but we’d rather Chrysler be executing simple designs rather than unsightly messes. Expect the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V8 to be under the hood when the SUV hits the road in early 2011.
