New VW Golf TDI BlueMotion is ‘most fuel-efficient ever’ with 73.5 mpg

Volkswagen claims its newly launched Golf TDI BlueMotion is about as good as it gets with that old standby, the internal combustion engine. The new Golf consumes 3.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers, the equivalent of getting 73.5 US miles per gallon (on the European cycle), a 15-percent improvement in fuel economy over the previous model.

The new Golf TDI BlueMotion produces 85 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer, which Volkswagen says is one of the best values worldwide for a car powered by internal combustion. Most impressive is the claim that this sort of efficiency, and the car’s 50-liter fuel tank, allows for a potential driving range of 1,500 kilometers (about 932 miles) between fill-ups. Upgraded aerodynamics – a lowered chassis, a special roof spoiler, and a radiator grille that gets cooled through partially closed air inlet screens in the bumper, for example – improve the Golf’s mpg.

The Golf TDI comes with a new common-rail, turbodiesel direct injection four-valve, four-cylinder engine that operates efficiently across a wide range of rpm. It offers 108 horsepower between 3,200 and 4,000 rpm, which VW says is ” a very fuel-efficient operating range.” Starting at 1,500 rpm and on through to 3,000 rpm, the new Golf TDI Bluemotion delivers a torque peak of 250 Nm (184 foot pounds). Put is all together with the modified six-speed gearbox and you get a 0-62 miles per hour time of 10.5 seconds. But, hey, 73.5 mpg.

This is the first Golf to be available in two well-known Volkswagen specification levels for those interested in spiffing it up. “Trendline” comes with 15-inch Lyon alloy wheels, a large rear spoiler and a redesigned and nearly closed radiator grille. “Comfortline” is additionally equipped with the ParkPilot parking assistance system front and rear, a “high quality” instrument cluster (no, we’re not exactly clear on what that means, either) and a few other perks. Android developers across the world have descended on San Francisco for this week’s Google I/O conference, and Ford is getting in on the action with its announcement to utilize Google’s new Prediction API to increase efficiency and decrease commute times.

The Prediction API has a range of location-based uses, but Ford’s plan involves tapping into your driving habits, gathering historical commute and errand data, and then optimize your route depending on traffic, weather and a host of other information.

Cutting down commute times and increasing fuel efficiency are at the top of the list, but it’s obvious Ford is primarily planning to use the tech for its future all-electric and plug-in hybrid-driving vehicles. By determining drive routes ahead of time, storing that information in the cloud and directing drivers to the most efficient roads, Ford can eliminate some of the range anxiety EV drivers have to contend with.

Tomorrow, a group of Ford researchers will be showing off concept version of the system at Google I/O, complete with a prototype use case that involves the driver opting in for the service (Ford is adamant that personal information security is of the utmost importance) and then utilizing the Google Prediction service to determine the most efficient route. The vehicle would ask the driver, “Good morning. Are you going to work?” and if the driver responds, “Yes,” the system will choose a route that’s optimized for the powertrain. This could also include EV-only zones, something that’s being experimented with throughout Europe.

We’re big fans of the 2011 Mazda2, but of all the good things this little hatch has going for it, fuel economy isn’t really one of them. Manual transmission models offer 29/35 miles per gallon city/highway, and while that isn’t terrible by any means, it’s sub-par when you consider the new standard for B- and C-segment cars: 40 mpg.

With the next-generation 2, Mazda plans to completely overhaul the powertrain, using its new SKYACTIV engine and transmission technology. The result is a Mazda2 that the automaker says will achieve 70 mpg without the help of an electric motor, making it the most fuel-efficient gas-powered car on the road.

The next Mazda2 will launch in Japan sometime in the first half of 2011 and will quickly make its way to other markets over the next few years. The 2 may be an all-new entry to the United States, but it’s merely a mid-cycle refresh of the car that’s been on sale overseas for years. We’re certainly eager to see what the Japanese automaker has up its sleeve, and while 70 mpg is indeed a lofty goal, it isn’t too far fetched these days.

A production sports car based on last year’s BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept will reportedly debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and come to market by 2013. According to Germany’s AutoBild, the car which they refer to as the I100 (as part of BMW’s project I which is also spawning the MegaCity EV) will be powered by a hybrid powertrain much like the one in the concept.

A 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine (possibly a diesel) paired with an electric motor based on the architecture of BMW’s mild hybrid 7 Series would drive the rear wheels, while a second motor would drive the front wheels. A lithium ion battery pack is earmarked to provide electrical energy storage, although it’s not clear if the plug-in capability of the concept would be retained.

According to Autobild, it’s also possible that we’ll see an M variant of this car using the 450 horsepower twin-turbo inline-six from the next generation M3 along with set of supercapacitors instead of a lithium battery pack.
