Dragster suspension in action – Click above to watch the video after the break

Last week we showed you what the suspension under a Mazda Miata looks like while carving up an autocross course. Today, we bring you a look at what your suspension is up to on a straight-and-narrow dragstrip launch.

This video will again test your car-enthusiast mettle. Do you care enough to see what your suspension is doing? If you drive on the drag strip regularly, this could be really helpful. If not, well, we hope you’re really into suspension dynamics.

You’ll notice that this shock is doing nearly all its work just after launch and then again right after passing the lights. That said, the shock is working diligently the entire time, in an attempt to keep the power pointed straight and the rear wheels where they belong.

Whereas the Miata’s suspension appeared to work quite hard in corners and then very little on straights, the dragsters mono shock set-up is in constant motion. The same, but different…

But wait, there’s more! Click past the jump for more reader-suggested suspension videos, where you can also see what goes on when tackling off-road racing from a number of angles. Enjoy! Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Lexus Safety Experience: Enthusiast knowledge made common

You’re an auto enthusiast. You know what all the acronyms on the buttons around your dash stand for. You understand that braking power can beat engine power 99% of the time. That feeling you get from activating the anti-lock braking system? It’s not “scary” and you know you should keep your foot down. The problem is that the average driver or new-car shopper is not an enthusiast. Lexus knows this and it has created an event to help educate its salesmen around the country, who in turn can better explain the safety systems available on the cars in the showroom.

The Lexus Safety Experience is a half-day event that highlights the safety tech fitted to most Lexus vehicles (some 2010 models and all 2011s). In short, it decodes the aforementioned acronym alphabet soup and then demonstrates exactly what each one does. What does VSC stand for? What is TRAC and VDIM? Is EBD something I should get tested for?

Answers: Vehicle Stability Control. Traction Control Activity Area and Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management. No, it means Electronic Brake-Force Distribution.

The terms might be foreign concepts to many of its customers, but Lexus is trying to change that. Not by telling its sales force what everything means – by showing them.

Enthusiast blog Saabs United inspires official automaker award

Throughout the turmoil of the on again, off again sale of Saab to Spyker, the site Saabs United did its part to rally supporters of the brand and keep the world up to date on what was happening at any particular moment. At one point during the brand’s dark days, Saabs United founder Steven Wade presented company CEO Jan Åke Jonsson with a boomerang as a symbol of the head honcho’s tenacity when it came to returning to the bargaining table. Now that Saab appears to be headed toward calmer waters, that boomerang has inspired Jonsson to create a Saabs United award.

The award features the very same boomerang along with a model of the Ursaab – the company’s very first model – on a plinth. The strange looking award will be handed out annually, and Jonsson says the honor will be given each year to the individual who made the single greatest contribution to the company’s success. Fittingly enough, this year the award went to Wade himself. Hop the jump for a look at the full press blast.
