Video: The importance of Angel Eyes, Ventiports and four round taillights

BMW Angel Eyes

Just the other day, we told you about how Lincoln isn’t really a luxury brand, according to Ford’s head design man, J Mays. His argument was that Lincoln lacked the unique DNA to differentiate it from the rest of the market, although the arrival of the MKZ is beginning to change that. Now, we have this video from Autoline Detroit, where Jim Hall, an analyst for 2953 Analytics who was quoted in yesterday’s Lincoln story, explains the influence of certain styling cues and how they impact the brands.

Using BMW (Angel Eyes) and Buick (Ventiports) as examples for small, simple touches that serve to distinguish the brand’s vehicles on the road, Hall then points out how changing trademark styling features, as Chevrolet has done on the new Corvette Stingray, can hurt the vehicle’s public perception. Take a look at the full video below for an interesting dive into what these styling features mean to their individual brands.

9-eyes.com features Google Street View’s most beautiful and disturbing images

Tumblr is a collection of personal fetishes, with homemade sites focused on everything from cats to cars to freckles. The site 9-eyes.com, on the other hand, doesn’t look through the two eyes of Jon Rafman, but rather through the numerous and far-flung eyes of Google Street View; the site is nothing but the “best” pics from Google’s roving army, like the one above.

We have no idea how the suited man (or is it a mannequin?) ended up on a lonely, rural lane. Nor do we have any idea why the boy is hiding behind the garbage can, why the reindeer is running down the road, or why Rafman – who blurs every person’s face – decided to blur the face of an elephant, as if we would have recognized it otherwise. But you’ll find that and much more in the museum-worthy collection.

Be warned: 9-eyes contains many flipped birds and shiny moons of a decidedly non-lunar variety. If you’re all right with that and you have time to kill, you know where to head.

See the streets of Long Beach through the eyes of Corvette Racing

Corvette Racing Long Beach

Corvette Racing Long Beach – Click above to view video after the jump

Corvette Racing went into the ALMS round in Long Beach, California ready for a fight. Coming off of the long grind that is 12 Hours of Sebring, the two-hour slam around a concrete-lined street course promised a new challenge for the team and drivers. As promised, the race was a hard fight, demanding the drivers stay vicious and focused from beginning to end.

Despite a lackluster last-place qualifying effort for the number 3 machine, car number 4 managed a second-place grid spot. Ten minutes in, Corvette Racing had first place, though they were only able to hang on until around minute 40. Despite its less-than-desirable start, car 3 managed to work its way up the ranks to a respectable finish.

Both cars came away with the scars of an all-out street race, but managed to finish near the top of the heap. Corvette Racing now heads into LeMans with a renewed focus and the momentum of two positive results in California. Click past the break to see the team’s results and get a closer look at the action.

‘Bye Dad: David Evan Davis, Jr., shuts his eyes one last time at 80 years, 140 days

David E. Davis, Jr., with wife Jeannie and son Matt

Talking about my dad just after the day of his death, I’m sort of forced to quote him. Right up to the last, he was “one tough summbitch” as he would say in praising anyone worth their salt. He saved that Burnside, Kentucky, inner country boy just for such moments as these.

His amazing wife Jeannie Luce Kuhn Davis (one of the great names in the annals of stepmothering) and I drove up to the hospital yesterday before I had to get to the airport to head to New York City, where I am writing this now. Jeannie was in her Chrysler minivan – her favorite for hauling dogs and people, in that order – me in a nice Saab 9-5 sedan. We’d brought the two big Italian Spinone hunting dogs, Tavi (for “Ottavio”) and Pucci (for “Puccini”), to the hospital the two previous days so they could give some love to their bedridden master. Jeannie was going to bring them again in the afternoon since my dad and everyone else on the floor got such a kick out of them with their silly bearded faces and warm affection.

In the morning my dad was fine and we had a good last bye-bye, saying we’d see each other really soon again anyway. After all, all post-op tests revealed that he was now completely cured of any cancer and he’d be heading home in maybe five or six days to heal up completely. We were all telling as much to the many well-wishers who phoned the room.

Feast your eyes on Truck Norris. But don’t stare. He doesn’t like that.

Truck Norris

You know all the lines by now, like “Chuck Norris doesn’t have a chin – under his beard is another fist,” or “There’s no such thing as thunder – only Chuck Norris’ laughter.” Well, like most jokes, they got old and died. (Unlike Chuck Norris, of course, who is immortal.) But now they’re back, in truck form.

Say hello to Truck Norris. (But don’t say hello too loud, lest you invoke the wrath of – you guessed it – Truck Norris.) Born before the dawn of time, but so named by its owner caretaker – Jeep enthusiast and IFSJA forum member Derf – when he noticed the falling snow avoiding his truck with trepidation, Truck Norris is an ’86 Jeep J10 pickup that has spawned a thread of frankly hilarious anecdotes. A few notable examples:

  • Truck Norris is as close as he wants to be to the objects that appear in his side view mirrors.
  • Truck Norris doesn’t come equipped with 4-Wheel Drive. 4-Wheel Drive comes equipped with Truck Norris.
  • Truck Norris doesn’t need oil. It just drives back in time and eats dinosaurs.

There’s plenty more laughs, if you’re so inclined, to be found in the forum thread, so head on over to check it out for yourself.

Mercedes-Benz TV eyes wander

Mercedes-Benz wants to know what catches your eye – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Chances are, if we were to ask you what catches a man’s eye in the natural world, you wouldn’t have to hire a team of researchers to come up with the answer. Of course, odds are that you don’t work for Mercedes-Benz, either. The German automaker wanted to discover exactly what it is about its vehicles that snags someone’s pupils, so it hired a team of scientists equipped with fancy camera-equipped glasses and unleashed a few unsuspecting test subjects on a quick walk-around the new CLS.

What’d they find? Not surprisingly, our eyes are immediately drawn to traits like the arching roof line, long hood and unique body contours down each flank. Surprise, surprise, we know. And what draws our eye in the opposite sex? Well, we’ll just let you watch the video after the jump to figure that one out for yourself. Unlike the CLS, the answer may actually surprise you.
