Ferrari goes digital to explain the drivetrain of the 2012 FF – Click above to watch video after the jump

The latest exotic machine from Maranello is the 2012 FF. The unusual Ferrari is a four-passenger shooting-brake with a 651-horsepower, 6.3-liter V12 under the hood. All of that go-go-energy is sent to the wheels via Ferrari’s new 4RM part-time all-wheel-drive system.

The Italian automaker has put together a video explaining how the system works. To put it simply, the system metes out torque to each wheel individually. That’s no easy task, since the twelve-cylinder mill churns out 504 pound-feet of the stuff. Click past the jump for a visual lesson on the Ferrari FF’s 4RM drivetrain. Also, turn up your speakers for the Beverly Hills Cop-esque soundtrack.

Ferrari Four hits the dunes, invites us inside

Ferrari FF in the dunes

2012 Ferrari FF – Click either image for high-res image gallery

Ferrari FF interiorFerrari’s unprecedented FF marks a startling new direction for the Italian automaker. The first all-wheel-drive Ferrari is also the first factory shooting brake, picking up where coachbuilt specials like Drogo’s 250 GTO Breadvan and Chinetti’s 365 GTB/4 Panther left off in the 1960s.

Until now, we’ve seen the FF from the studio, we’ve seen it powering through snow drifts and we’ve seen it in person on the floor of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. But to coincide with its public debut, Ferrari has hit us with another batch of images, apparently shot in Abu Dhabi around the grounds of the Ferrari World theme park. Among the fresh shots are also the best views we’ve gotten yet of the meticulously-crafted bovine graveyard that is the FF’s commodious interior. Check ’em out in the updated high-res image gallery below.

Report: Ferrari renames F1 car… again

Filed under: Motorsports, Truck, Etc., Europe, Ford, Ferrari, Racing

F150 nameplatesFerrari’s 2011 F1 car was originally unveiled as the Ferrari F150 – a hat tip to the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. That got Ford’s boxers in a knot, as Uncle Henry’s boys feared that its customers would get confused by the name similarities with the Ford F-150 pickup.

Ferrari grudgingly obliged FoMoCo, and changed the car’s name to the Ferrari F150th Italia. Ford liked that, and declared the matter settled. Ferrari, however wasn’t done. Still galled that they had to change the name of the racer in the first place, they decided to make one final change to get it just the way they want it.

Now, Ferrari’s 2011 Formula 1 effort will be called the Ferrari F150° Italia. The added symbol is the Italian equivalent of the English “th” suffix, and Ferrari added it to give the name more Italian flair. Maranello announced the move in a biting, sarcastic news release saying, “…Therefore the name will now read as the Ferrari 150° Italia, which should make it clear even to the thickest of people that the name of the car is a tribute to the anniversary of the unification of our country.

“Let’s hope the matter is now definitely closed and that we can concentrate on more serious matters, namely ensuring that our car that already seems to be pretty good out of the box, becomes a real winner.” Thanks for the tip, mcman!

FBI being sued for crashing a Ferrari

Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Etc., Government/Legal, Ferrari, Luxury

Ferrari F50

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice have landed themselves in hot water over the destruction of a Ferrari F50. According to The Detroit News, the vehicle was reported stolen from a dealership in Rosemont, Pennsylvania in 2003, and the dealer made and insurance claim for the sum of $750,000 at that time. Michigan-based Motors Insurance Corp. shelled out the cash, and in August 2008, the FBI recovered the vehicle in Kentucky. At that time, the FBI stored the vehicle while waiting to prosecute the thief, at least until someone at the bureau decided to use it for a little local arbor work.

The Ferrari F50 lost control and struck a tree with an FBI special agent behind the wheel in May of 2009, and Motors Insurance Corp. subsequently filed a claim to both the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice for the full $750,000. Both parties rejected the claim under the pretense that the Ferrari was being detained by the FBI at the time of the incident.

The insurance company then set about submitting Freedom of Information Act requests for documents pertaining to the storage, transportation and handling of the Italian exotic, most of which were denied under federal exemptions or outright ignored. The company did manage to get a hold of one email that said that U.S. Assistant Attorney J. Hamilton Thompson rode with Special Agent Frederick C. Kingston on the day of the accident and that the vehicle fishtailed and slid sideways shortly after leaving the FBI storage warehouse.

Motors Insurance Corp. is now suing both the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI to release the rest of the documents pertaining to the vehicle.

Ferrari working on its own version of Fiat’s MultiAir?

Filed under: Performance, Technology, Ferrari, Fiat

Ferrari MultiAir

The flow of technology under the Fiat umbrella typically moves from Ferrari to the other brands. After all, between its road and race car programs, Maranello spends an inordinate amount of time and money on research and development. But it looks like the latest bit of technology in Italy is about to go the other way.

Rumor has it that Ferrari is working on a high-performance version of Fiat’s acclaimed MultiAir system – one of the biggest assets that Fiat brought to the Chrysler deal. The system allows for an infinitely variable valvetrain setup altered on the fly through hydraulic actuators to optimize performance and efficiency. According to industry speculation on the reportedly leaked schematic above, Ferrari’s system could also incorporate the type of pneumatically-actuated valve control used by the Scuderia to allow its F1 engines to redline over the 20,000 RPM mark, far beyond what a conventional spring-driven system could allow.

Combined, the systems could stand to simultaneously improve the efficiency and the output of Ferrari’s already high-revving powertrains.

Are you a mega-wealthy car enthusiast that’s always eager to be first in line when it comes to supercars? Here’s a tip for you: Buy a plane ticket (or fuel up the jet) and head on down to Florida for the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance.

Now in its fifth year, this upper-crust car show has been gaining momentum in the concours community, in part by scoring a lot of “firsts” for the auction portion of its event. Auctiongoers in past years have had a shot to buy the first U.S. examples of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 and Spyder R8, Ferrari California and 458 Italia and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

On the docket for this year’s festivities? How does the 2012 Ferrari FF, 2012 Audi R8 GT and 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. According to The DuPont Registry, each car will be the first of its kind sold in the United States. If you need to pick up something for your kids or the wife, Mercedes has also supplied a 2012 CLS63 Limited Edition, of which only 30 are to be made – and, of course, this is also the very first one sold.

*UPDATE: If you were booking travel arrangements to Florida with the goal of winning yourself the first example of Ferrari’s FF shooting brake… don’t. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County (the organization for whom the concours auction is to benefit) has issued a formal retraction – the Ferrari FF will not be available for auction. Please read the official press release after the jump for more details.

Reuters: Montezemolo denies plans for Ferrari listing

Filed under: Etc., Europe, Earnings/Financials, Ferrari, Fiat

Ferrari Badge

Despite the prophecies that many analysts made last year, it looks like neither Fiat nor Ferrari has any pressing interest in listing the supercar maker as a separate entity from its parent company. According to Reuters, Ferrari CEO Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has said that there are no current plans to list the company, and that while such a project may crop up in the next four-to-five years, it’s not something that’s on the table at the moment. Montezemolo made the comments while speaking with foreign media, and he added that it’s possible that Ferrari may never be listed at all.

Just last year, analysts predicted that Fiat was considering a separate listing for the Prancing Horse. Fiat currently owns about 85 percent of the Maranello-based automaker, though when the reports surfaced, the company said that a separate listing for Ferrari was only one of several different strategies that it was investigating at the time.

Ferrari P4/5 Competizione – Click above to watch video after the jump

We’ve seen video of James Glickenhaus’ “daily driver” Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina on the track and the street, and we already know that his race-prepared P4/5 Competizione is progressing nicely. While photos show the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione to be just as sexy as the Enzo-based road car that inspired it, nothing shows off a racing car’s chops like actual footage of it in action.

That’s now available via just-released in-car video of the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione lapping Italy’s Vallelunga circuit. It’s the latest exidence that Jim Glickenhaus’ new machine is indeed the business. Sounds as good as it looks, too. Follow the jump to watch. Thanks to Don for the tip!

Video: 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT looks like a Ferrari, helps you steal your neighbor’s wife

1987 Pontiac Fiero GT gets girls, confounds 80’s bullies – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Pontiac Fiero was produced from 1984 through 1988 and the “fired-up” GT version was introduced in 1985. Just one year before the car’s demise, Pontiac slightly updated the Fiero front and rear, greatly improving its appearance to most late-’80s buyers in the process.

A video sales aid was produced to help dealers learn more about the Pontiac Fiero GT and the clip is pure, uncut 1987 packed into 6 minutes and 38 seconds. We won’t spoil the entire clip but it features a nerdy Fiero owner, an 80’s tough guy neighbor and that tough guy’s jean-jacketed significant other.

“Just like a Ferrari? Pretty close.”

Put on your acid wash jeans then click past the jump and take a trip back to a time when people confused Pontiacs for Ferraris. Poor guy in the Mazda RX-7 just didn’t stand a chance… And now you know why hunting down dealer training materials is one of our favorite guilty pleasures.
