GM leaps Ford into top 10 on 2011 Fortune 500 list

fortune 500 top 10 gm tops fordFord has been taking the lion’s share of the headlines lately thanks to a fresh product lineup and a string of very impressive profit margins, but General Motors has been winning on the revenue front. CNN Money‘s annual Fortune 500 list was recently published, and GM climbed all the way from number 15 in 2010 to number seven in 2011. The General managed $135 billion in revenue, putting the automaker behind only Wal-Mart, some oil companies and a couple financial/investment conglomerates.

Meanwhile, Ford’s Fortune ranking went in the other direction. The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker went from number eight in 2010 to number 10 for 2011. The Blue Oval dropped in the rankings in spite of the fact that revenue jumped from $118 billion in 2010 to $128 billion in 2011.

While GM can claim a higher Fortune 500 ranking than Ford, we’re guessing nobody in Dearborn is losing sleep over the matter. Both companies are in the top 10 and each company is solidly profitable, and that’s the stuff happy stockholders are made of.

Saab is looking to move forward after its long relationship with General Motors. Saab CEO Victor Muller quoted Winston Churchill today at the LA Auto Show saying “If you’re going through hell… keep going.” Muller says that Saab has gone through hell and is seeing the light on the other side. The 2012 Saab 9-4X is the latest taste of what Saab now has in store for us.

2012 Saab 9-4XThe 9-4X takes aim at the luxury crossover segment and is prepared to do battle withs some heavies, such as the Audi Q5, Lexus RX and BMW X3. The Cadillac SRX platform-mate arrives chock full of upmarket goodness like eight-way power adjustable seats, Bluetooth connectivity and a tri-zone climate control system; all part of the standard features list.

The exterior styling stays true to what we see with the Saab 9-5 sedan, and clearly states that the vehicle comes from a line of sporty cars. To match this style, the under-hood offerings come in two spirited flavors: a naturally-aspirated 265-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 and a direct-injection, turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 that pumps out 300 hp. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox that feeds all four wheels through Saab’s XWD system.

It wasn’t just the 9-4X on the menu at the 2010 LA Auto Show. We learned that the 9-5 wagon is set to make its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next March, Saab is expanding distribution into China and Russia and all operations have officially been moved to Trollhättan. It’s also the first time in Saab’s history that the 9-3 convertible has been built on Swedish ground.

Hop the jump to find out more about the 2012 Saab 9-4X including a chance to watch the model’s first commercial, and stay tuned for more from this now-independent Swedish automaker in the near future.

First of Many: Fortune Motorsports Honda CR-Z coming to SEMA

Filed under: Aftermarket, SEMA Show, Coupe, Hybrid, Hatchback, Honda

We’re bracing ourselves for the onslaught of tuned Honda CR-Z hybrids coming to this year’s SEMA show. Honda has been hawking the hatch as a legitimate successor to the fabled CRX – a car that helped to push a whole generation of wrenches toward Japanese sheetmetal – and shops the world over have been champing at the bit to wring a little more power out of the seemingly anemic newcomer. The kids at Fortune Motorsports have been the first out of the gate with an up-skirt teaser for their take on Honda’s hybrid hatch.

Not surprisingly, the crew hasn’t released any details on their creation. We do know that the build will work in parts from the likes of ADV.1 Wheels, Falken Tires, Status Racing, Magnaflow and the neon fiends at StreetGlow. You can head over to the Fortune Motorsports site for a full list of the car’s sponsors, or you can click over to Warren Shim-Quee’s site to keep track of the build up.
