Video: Proof positive of Tiff Needell standing in for The Stig on Top Gear

Tiff Needell on set at Top Gear

Tiff Needell in Top Gear out-takes – Click above to watch the video after the jump

What a good sport, that Tiff Needell. The affable Brit was once a Top Gear co-host, but these days he’s headlining rival program Fifth Gear. But when his old friends Clarkson and company needed a replacement to fill in for The Stig, Needell heeded the call.

We reported on Tiff’s temp placement last month, and now we have video proof courtesy of the BBC. Needell came back to Top Gear to coach the program’s latest guest star – Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle – how to coax the most out of the program’s reasonably-priced Kia Cee’d. Follow the jump to see Boyle behind the wheel, and Needell’s reactions from the sidelines.

Followup: As it turns out, Christians also offended by Top Gear holiday special

Top Gear's Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson, and James May

It seems that Muslims aren’t the only religious group upset about the recent Top Gear holiday special. According to The Digital Journal and iAfrica, Christians have now come out against the show. While Muslims found issue with hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May all donning the traditional headwear of Muslim women, Christians are more riled about the episode’s closing manger scene. After the trio of presenters made their way from Iraq to Bethlehem, they came up on a miniature baby Stig tucked away in a manger. The clip was meant to parody the nativity scene with Clarkson, Hammond and May all portraying the three wise men and Mini-Me Stig filling in for baby Jesus. Apparently, that bit of blasphemy was enough to ruffle a few feathers.

As usual, neither Top Gear nor the BBC have responded to the kerfuffle surrounding the show or its content.

Top Gear holiday special draws religious firestorm over burkha scene

Top Gear Christmas Episode

The three amigos of Top Gear have once again gotten themselves into hot water over a stunt they pulled during a recent holiday special. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were attempting to recreate the trek of the three wise men from Iraq through Turkey, Syria and Jordan before winding up in Bethlehem. The gimmick seems innocuous enough until you hear that during various portions of the drive, all three hosts donned a traditional piece of headwear typically worn by Muslim women – the niqāb. The plan was to use the burkhas to disguise the three hosts during their run through the deserts, though rather predictably, it seems that the trio have offended more than a few of the show’s 6.6 million viewers.

According to The Daily Mail, watchers found issue with what many perceived to be hosts making a mockery of the world’s second largest religion. So far, neither Top Gear nor any of the hosts have come out to speak about the dust-up one way or the other. To see the entire hour-and-fifteen minute special, check it out by clicking here.

Top Gear 2010 Christmas Special

Top Gear spends Christmas in the Middle East – Click above to view high-res image gallery
The three wise-asses-men of Top Gear were handed a new challenge for their 2010 holiday special: Travel 1,200 miles west to Bethlehem, driving through northern Iraq, Syria and a few other Middle Eastern countries and deliver gold, frankincense and myrrh to a newborn in a manger. Easy enough, right? But what vehicles to take?

The producers required each host to pic a compact convertible, so Clarkson went with the reasonable choice – a Mazda MX-5 Miata – featuring his “car of many colors” paint scheme. Just like Joseph. Hammond goes with a Fiat Barchetta fitted with a Bedouin tent while James May decides to go with something German and outfits a BMW Z3 for desert duty.

Their journey was filled with the typical Top Gear-tomfoolery including James May knocking himself unconscious. The entire escapade can be viewed online… for now, but in the meantime, check out all three vehicles in the gallery below.

Toyota sends four Hilux pickups across Antarctica à la Top Gear

Toyota Hilux goes to Antartica

Toyota Hilux goes to Antartica – Click above for high-res image gallery

Thanks in part to the work of the crew at Top Gear, the Toyota Hilux pickup has garnered a reputation for being all but unstoppable. Whether it’s being left to suffer at the hands of a rising tide, plummeting from the top of a demolished housing complex or roaming the Antarctic wastes, there just seems to be no beating the Hilux.

Toyota itself has set about showing the world just what these vehicles are capable of by taking the pickup on a brutal 2,858-mile trek across our planet’s southern-most continent. During the adventure, the vehicles faced temperatures down to negative 68.8 degrees Farenheit and altitudes of over 11,100 feet.

Though the trucks were specially-prepared by the aptly-named company Artic Trucks, their 3.0-liter diesel engines were left bone stock. Over the trip, the Hilux proved it could keep pace with just about any tracked vehicle while still returning better fuel economy than just about any other expedition vehicle. That’s important when a single barrel of oil can cost as much as $10,000 once it reaches the Antarctic shore. Hit the jump to check out the full press release.

James May hospitalized shooting Top Gear Syria special

James MayOne of the three amigos of Top Gear has wound up in the hospital after an accident that occurred during filming in Syria. James May fell and hit his head on a rock while trying to help tow Jeremy Clarkson’s vehicle. May was standing on the tow line when it went taught, giving him a quick flip in the air before coming back down to Earth head-first. The crew was a few hundred miles from the closest thing resembling civilization, but May was taken to the nearest hospital and treated for his injuries. Despite the apparently large amount of blood from the wound, Captain Slow said that the whole hospital trip was more of an excuse for the locals to use their brain scanner than for his health.

The filming was part of a holiday special where May, Clarkson and Richard Hammond all attempt to recreate the 1,200-mile journey of the Three Wise Men. No doubt, our three intrepid hosts were utilizing less than suitable vehicles for the occasion.

Top Gear UK opens new season with drive-by Stig shooting session

Stig

If we didn’t know any better, we’d think there was still some bad blood between Ben Collins and the hosts of Top Gear. Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond all took a few pot shots at cardboard cutouts of the Stig during this week’s episode while trying their respective hands at the art of drive-by shooting. According to The First Post, Captain Slow was the initial one to bust a few caps with a handgun from the passenger side of a Ferrari, followed by Hammond gunning from a Porsche. Not to be outdone, Clarkson took on his target with an automatic rifle from the window of a Mercedes-Benz.

Collins infamously riled both the producers and the hosts of Top Gear by publishing a memoir of his time as the Stig called The Man in the White Suit. With the mystery of the Stig’s identity dissipated, Collins was canned from the show. He quickly found work with the rival gang over at Fifth Gear, but Top Gear has yet to replace its tame racing driver. Still, there is some word that the show has found a new driver and its only a matter of time before he shows his face helmet. Thanks for the tip, Gooner!
