Geneva 2011: 2012 Opel Ampera set to electrify Europe

Just as the first round of Chevrolet Volts are hitting the streets of the United States, Europe’s own version of the electrified sedan makes its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. General Motors took the wraps off the 2012 Opel Ampera, a sedan that wears more aggressively styled body panels than its Chevy cousin. It’s pretty slick, and when you consider the technology that exists underneath that shapely sheetmetal, Europe should be pleasantly surprised.

Pricing, however, is a bit steep. GM has set the Ampera’s base price at €42,900, which includes Europe’s steep Value Added Tax, and that translates to roughly $60,000 based on current exchange rates. Still, Opel says that it already has about 1,000 orders placed for the sedan across the continent, and with Voltec engineering on tap, hopefully the Ampera will make as big of a splash in Europe as the Volt has here in America.

Geneva 2011: Morgan Threewheeler is a clear best-in-show candidate

Morgan ThreeWheeler

Some of us – and by some of us, I really mean me, myself and I – are ready to name the Morgan Threewheeler the coolest vehicle from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

It’s simply three-wheeled perfection, and here’s why: There’s a fuel-injected, 115-horsepower V-Twin engine sitting smack-dab between the spindly wire-spoked wheels up front, mated to a Mazda five-speed gearbox that sends power to a single rear wheel. You’re basically strapping yourself to an engine.

Seating for two comes standard, as do the roll bars. Apart from that, it seems that the buyer has numerous options to make the Threewheeler his or her own. We (I) want one… badly. Check out the high-res gallery of live photos below to see why.

Geneva 2011: Mini Rocketman Concept misses the Earth so much, misses its wife

Mini Rocketman Concept

Mini’s new space-age Rocketman Concept previews what the future of urban mobility could look like for the BMW sub-brand. It’s slightly smaller than the current Cooper, and we’re big fans of the dual-hinged doors that pivot outwards, complete with the sills. In fact, the whole concept strikes us as totally cool, and is further proof that Mini’s cheekiness can be further evolved to new types of vehicles.

The Rocketman’s interior uses a space-efficient three-plus-one seating arrangement, and we’re told that the car is powered by a highly efficient powertrain capable of returning 78 miles per gallon on the U.S. cycle. Mini’s new Connected infotainment system is displayed via three-dimensional graphics on the interactive speedometer screen, and there’s even a steering wheel-mounted joystick to operate the whole slew of functions.

There’s a whole host of clever features found within the Rocketman, but above all, the concept’s design is what really stands out. See for yourself in the high-res image galleries below.

Geneva 2011: Infiniti Etherea Concept tries not to look like a hatchback

Infiniti Etherea Concept

Infiniti is clearly interested in expanding its model line into the compact segment, a fact evidenced by the Etherea Concept that it is currently showing off at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The most far-out styling feature of the Etherea is no doubt the crescent-shaped C-pillar, though opinions seem to vary on its effectiveness on such a compact car.

In any case, all the hallmarks of a modern-day concept car are present and accounted for, including a hybrid powertrain that features a 245-horsepower supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a twin-clutch system that links the electric motor to the engine. All those ponies are routed through a continuously variable automatic transmission to the front wheels.

As far as the styling goes, Infiniti has this to say about the Etherea Concept: “As an exploration of a future entry-level Infiniti production model, Etherea can be summed up as a four-door coupe with five-door practicality – a hatchback that doesn’t look like a hatchback.” We’ll let you decide how true that may be…

Feel free to read the complete press release after the break, and be sure to check out our high-res gallery of live photos below.

Geneva 2011: Fab Design SLS AMG is anything but

Fab Design SLS AMG

We find it a bit ironic that a car this hideous came from a company called Fab Design. It’s hard to imagine that a car as pretty as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG could be turned into something so offensive. We’re fine with the matte blue paint finish, but the added aero treatment, massive rear air vents below the taillamps and blue-trimmed wheels are all sorts of awful.

And then there’s the interior.

This kaleidoscope of ugly uses a mixture of white and blue on nearly every touchable surface, including the leather seats. We don’t doubt that it’s as comfortable as ever, but this is eye-stabbingly bad.

Don’t believe us? See the Fab Design SLS AMG for yourself in the high-res image gallery below.

Cinderella was right when they sang “Don’t Know What You’ve Got (‘Til It’s Gone).” The Ford Ranger has left the country only to reappear around the globe, looking pretty darn good in the process. Leading the charge into our now-broken heart is the 2012 Ford Ranger Wildtrak; a diesel-sipping, off-road ready, gadget-packed pickup truck that’s making out with the rest of the world while all we can do is watch from the sidelines.

The Wildtrak is the newest range-topping trim and it comes crammed full of features. On the outside, the Ranger Wildtrak sports a unique color scheme on its front fascia, 18-inch wheels and a roof rack. Inside, the cabin is fitted with a touch-screen control system that features satellite navigation, Bluetooth, iPod integration and voice recognition.

Under the hood, the 2012 Ford Ranger Wildtrak is offered with a choice of two diesel engines: A 2.2-liter four-cylinder that produces 277 pound-feet of torque or a 3.2-liter inline-five that generates an impressive 347 lb-ft.

You can stare at it all you want in the gallery below. Just know that heartaches come and go, and all that’s left are the words.

Geneva 2011: Gumpert Tornante by Touring makes the Apollo look like an Aztek

Gumpert Tornante by Touring

Remember the Gumpert Apollo? It boasted world-beating performance while wearing a face only a mother could love. Thanks to design firm Touring Superleggera, the Apollo now has a much better looking new sibling sharing the Gumpert stable. It’s called Tornante, which, according to Google Translate, means “hairpin bend” in Italian. For all we care, it could mean “Sexy Catfish” because it’s a huge leap forward in style when compared to the Apollo, even if the split-window Chevrolet Corvette rump is derivative and more than a little unflattering.

Just because this new Gumpert is softer doesn’t mean it has any less bite than the Apollo. Gasoline is fed to the mighty 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which produces 700-horsepower. The Tornante utilizes the same TT40e transmission as the Apollo but received paddle-shifters.

We’re still waiting for more details to rise to the surface, because word on the Geneva streets is that Gumpert has an even more powerful version planned for the future. Apollo owners, feel free to remove the bag from your head and head-on out to your local Gumpert dealer. Just tell them you want “the prettier one” this time.

Geneva 2011: De Tomaso Deauville is Italian for “Not Pantera”

Filed under: Concept Cars, Geneva Motor Show, Crossover, Luxury, MISC

de tomaso deauville

SLS or SLC? Neither. De Tomaso has pulled back the Geneva Motor Show wraps on its all-new model, and the four-door shall be known, officially, as the Deauville. If you’re experiencing a bit of déjà vu, that’s because the Italian automaker is resurrecting that particular moniker from its 1970s catalog, when it was attached to a much svelter creature than this rather odd looking sedan.

The five-passenger aluminum chassis’d sedan features a 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 under the hood producing 300-horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm. Gear shifts are handled courtesy of a six-speed automatic transmission and power is sent out to all four wheels. The powertrain combination propels the Deauville to a limited top speed of 155 miles per hour, and helps it make the run from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Not too shabby for a sedan that weighs 4,078 pounds.

Geneva 2011: 2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi is one sharp cargo-hauler

Filed under: Wagon, Geneva Motor Show, Saab

2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi

2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi – Click above for high-res image gallery

We’re glad to see that the Saab 9-5 SportCombi is looking good once again. During the General Motors-influenced mid-2000s, the 9-5 took on a bit of a weird shape (those chrome-ringed Dame Edna headlamps were just awful), and thus, the subsequent wagon variant wasn’t nearly as special as the generation that debuted in the late-1990s. That all changes now, as Saab has officially pulled the wraps off of the SportCombi of the new 9-5, and might we say, hubba hubba.

Aside from the addition of some rear windows and some sheetmetal, nothing significant has changed in the 9-5’s transition from a sedan to a proper station wagon. Both the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and 2.8-liter turbo-six will still be on hand, with the larger engine paired to the automaker’s XWD all-wheel-drive system. Look for production to start later this year.
