Gran Turismo 5 first commercial

We’re still anxiously waiting for Sony and Polyphony Digital to yank the Gran Turismo 5 rug out from under us one more time. We know that the game is due out on November 24, but the dynamic duo of delays have cried wolf so many times before, we can’t help but be jaded. Still, Sony has just turned out a new commercial for the game, complete with the company’s “VP of More Awesome,” Kevin Butler.

The sight of a full-fledged ad campaign does a good bit to assuage our worries about another delay. After all, Sony wouldn’t go through the trouble of actually airing something like this if it were just going to burn us again, right? Right?

Follow the jump to see for yourself.

Gran Turismo 5 reveals virtual X1 prototype racecar to warp minds and stretch imagination [w/video]

Gran Turismo 5 X1 Prototype teaser

At some point in the future, Gran Turismo 5 will be available for purchase. And yes, it’s taken too damn long. But making the wait that much more painful is news fresh out of Tokyo that a special vehicle will be available for thumb-thrashing fun.

It’s not some uber-exotic that you pine for while staring longingly at photos on the web, nor is it some championship racecar from today or a bygone era. It’s nothing you’ve seen or heard about before – its called the X1 Prototype.

Digital Polyphony has teamed up with Adrian Newey from Red Bull Racing to ask: What would happen if a top-tier racecar was freed from any and all technical regulations? What speeds could it achieve, what would it look like and what automotive records could it devour? The answer to those questions, and possibly many others, could be found with the X1 (virtual) prototype vehicle.

The team who produces Gran Turismo is known for their attention to detail and the realistic tracks, while cars and driving dynamics are a major part of the popularity behind this series. So it’s safe to assume that the drivable concept sticks to the laws of physics while pushing technology to the limit. Think of it as a return to the turbocharged 80s-era F1 cars, with some Group B rally monsters thrown in along with a heaping helping of cutting edge technology.

Our interest in the return of GT5 has been waning after the dozens of delays, but the X1 has our interest seriously piqued, and the crew from Joystiq has snagged video of it in action. We also have a trailer video which shows off lots of the cool (real) cars, the amazing tracks and the dynamic weather we can look forward to. Take a look at both clips after the jump.

Mansory Maserati Gran Turismo S throttles good taste within an inch of its life

Mansory’s take on the Maserati Gran Turismo S – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mansory, a “specialist for refining luxury automobiles,” has had its way with the Maserati GranTurismo and GranTurismo S. The black-and-redness you see above is the result. Carbon fiber does duty on spoilers and aprons at the front and back, as well as the grille and trim for the new duct work. It’s definitely… polarizing, but this one-off Maser is certainly less outrageous than some of Mansory’s other creations.

There are about 30 more horses under the hood, and a tuned suspension will have you rolling 30 millimeters lower to the ground via a set of Mansory-designed wheels. If you want to know more, check out the press release after the jump. If you think you’re ready to lay eyes on it, there’s a gallery of high-res photos below.

Karting in Gran Turismo 5 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Despite our best efforts, we’re getting pretty excited about the arrival of Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5. After suffering through years of the company (and the interwebs at large) crying wolf with launch dates, it appears as if we may finally have the game in our hands by the end of this year. There’s also some word that the release will coincide with the second coming of various deities. By now, chances are you’ve heard all about the new race modes available with the next chapter in the simulator franchise, including the addition of NASCAR, but here’s one that took us by surprise.

A video has just recently cropped up on YouTube showing what appears to be a kart race in GT5. We haven’t heard one way or the other whether we’ll be able to slide a shifter through the corners of our favorite Gran Turismo tracks or if this was just some sort of one-off ditty built for a demonstration. That doesn’t stop us from hoping for the former, though. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.

BMW Gran Coupe reportedly go for launch

Filed under: Coupe, Sedan, Performance, BMW, Luxury

Not to be outdone by the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide or Audi A7, BMW will reportedly be building a production version of the Gran Coupe concept that debuted at this year’s Beijing Motor Show. It may be a late arrival to the growing segment of swoopy luxury sedans, but BMW will indeed poise the Gran Coupe to offer just as much in the way of technology and refinement as the lot of its competitors.

Based on the next-generation 6 Series, the Gran Coupe is set to launch sometime in 2012 and will share its powertrains with what we’re seeing in the 5, 6, and 7 Series BMWs, including a possible hybrid variant. Naturally, the production Gran Coupe will slot between the 5 and 7 Series in terms of size and price, and if the overall design doesn’t change too much, it’ll certainly be an attractive addition to the BMW lineup.

BMW reportedly green-lights 6 Series Gran Coupé concept for production

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé concept – Click above to watch video walkaround after the jump

As a testament to its success in starting the four-door coupe movement, the Mercedes-Benz CLS is nigh on its second version, yet competitors have only recently begun to crowd the room. With the Audi A7 about to gain membership in the club, BMW couldn’t hang back, so it has reportedly slapped a sales date on the 6 Series Gran Coupe concept: it’ll be here in 2012.

Rumored for the summer of 2012 by German publication Automobilwoche, that puts its introduction a year behind the next-generation 6 Series. Engines are said to be a mix of gas and diesel, and BMW evidently spoke of a potential hybrid application. Perhaps most importantly, design cues such as the frameless doors and LED lighting will be carried into production. Those trick exhaust tips, however, not likely. Follow the jump for a video walkaround of the exterior and check out our high-res gallery below for a refresher.
