Chrysler’s two-minute long Super Bowl commercial won nationwide praise for its uplifting, can-do message about the embattled city of Detroit. And if you think the novella-sized spot for the Chrysler 200 was popular across the U.S., then you can imagine how the ad played within the borders of the city itself.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the Detroit City Council paid homage to the Eminem ad with an official recognition on Tuesday. The council tipped its hat to Team Pentastar for painting the city in a positive light, adding that the spot “helped to paint a positive portrayal of our beloved city on a national level by filming the entire commercial inside the city of Detroit and showcasing all of our great landmarks.” Chrysler brand CEO Olivier Francois said that the ad paid homage to a great city and the home of the auto industry.

When we first saw the two-minute commercial we couldn’t help but think that Chrysler should have featured the hot-looking 300 instead of the Sebring-derived 200 (even though the former is built in neighboring Canada). But in retrospect, we’re thinking that the power of this ad made the car itself an afterthought in the long run. Hit the jump to watch the commercial again.

It’s lonely at the top. And by that we mean that, if you’re shopping at the very pinnacle of the automotive market, you’ve really only got a few choices. Looking for a stately saloon? Then you’re looking at a Rolls-Royce, a Bentley or maybe a Maybach, but that’s about it. So you can be sure your friends, neighbors and fellow captains of industry will already have whatever you’re looking at. What’s an elitist to do?

That could explain the seemingly endless array of special editions a company like Rolls-Royce announces out on an annual basis. But this year is a special year for the iconic motor company, as it celebrates 100 years of its legendary mascot – the Spirit of Ecstasy. And to mark the occasion, Rolls has announced a special run of commemorative Phantoms.

The special edition is differentiated from the rest of the Phantoms you’ll see at the country club with a series of unique touches. For one, the hood ornament is plated in silver, and buyers get a replica statuette to put on their desks as well. For another, four exclusive paint options are offered, including Rhapsody Black, Maiden Blue, Ethereal White Pearl and Wildflower, complimented by black chrome badges.

The interior also features a number of special accents, from the unique instruments and Britannia Silver clock to the commemorative plaque and a special inscription on the glovebox lid, which you can read all about in the press release after the jump.

Monterey 2010: Pebble Beach honors Alfa Romeo on its 100th birthday

It might be hard to believe, but Alfa Romeo is a century old. Check that – A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or Lombardy Car Manufacturing Company) is 100, having been established in 1910. That was the year that a group of Milanese enthusiasts decided they could build cars better than the stuff they were getting from foreign automakers. ALFA wasn’t very successful at first – at least not financially – but during World War I, the company was taken over by a young engineer, Nicola Romeo, and the rest, as they say, is history. 100 years later, we have some of the most incredible and memorable sports and racing cars of all time wearing the cross-and-serpent or the Quadrifoglio.

At the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, the automaker received a warm welcome, with two dozen or so of their most significant models on hand for the festivities – many from the factory museum. Those 24 cars represented just a small sample of the sports and racing cars that made the company famous – everything from one of their first 1910 A.L.F.A. 24-hp Torpedo model, to the bio-mechanical 2010 Alfa Romeo Pandion Bertone Coupé.

It was a great gathering of incredible cars to honor this legendary automaker as it enters its second century, a century that will thankfully see its return to the United States market. It’s hard to say if today’s models will stand the test of time like the classics gathered at Pebble, but we think that the 8C Competizione will look sensational out there on the 18th fairway in 40 years, just like it does today.
