Motocross base jump in Chile

For those unaware, the ‘base’ in base jumping is actually an acronym that stands for buildings, antennae, spans (otherwise known as bridges) and earth. In other words, if you jump off pretty much anything that stands tall above the ground below, you’re base jumping.

But what if you base jump from a motorcycle, or, more specifically, a motocross bike? Base jumper Julio Munoz decided to stage just such a stunt, and the results are predictably stunning and insane. And costly.

While Munoz floated safely to earth after a few thousand feet of freefall, the dirtbike didn’t fare so well. After being airlifted via helicopter to the top of the Chilean mountain, then jumped off a low-slung ramp into thin air, Munoz dismounted the machine and let it fall back down to the earth. Wanna watch? Check out the video after the break.

Closer to the Edge trailer at the Isle of Man

Regardless of where you stand on the two wheels versus four debate, chances are that you respect the Isle of Man TT. The race is a living relic of motorsport that can trace its roots all the way back to 1907, and while most other racing venues have seen their essence diluted by ever evolving technology, regulations and commercialization, the Isle of Man continues to be an event dominated by one pursuit above all else: go faster. The course is a twisting loop of public roads that snake through open country side and dense village centers, meaning that nearly any mistake translates into immediate disaster.

Guy Martin has famously podiumed at the race eight times now but has yet to take top honors. Closer to the Edge, a new documentary, has been worked up to take a look inside both Martin’s two-wheeled exploits and what makes the Isle of Man TT so special. The film is set to be released on April 22nd, but in the meantime, we highly suggest you hit the jump to check out the trailer.

New Kickboxer Concept is all-wheel-drive diesel insanity on two wheels

Kickboxer diesel all-wheel drive

It’s been a while since we heard anything from Ian McElroy. As you may recall, he’s the twisted mind who came up with the notion of lodging a Subaru boxer four-cylinder between the rails of a motorcycle frame. Well, it appears that he’s been a busy bee since showing off his first take on the Kickboxer Concept. McElroy has set about reimagining his creation with a diesel boxer lump at the heart of the action. The engine is still sourced from Fuji Heavy Industries, though it’s both smaller and more efficient than the old gasoline lump.

The newest addition to the Kickboxer family boasts new body work and a different swing arm design along with a new turbo configuration. Not quite mad enough for you? How about sticking an all-wheel drive version of the oil-burning moto in your pipe? McElroy worked up a twin-chain design that works with some help from a jack shaft, idler sprocket and a drive axle.

These aren’t just some random renderings, though. McElroy says that he has all of the CAD files he needs to have the bikes machined and built. All he needs is the coin to do so. Shall we start passing the hat?
