Report: Jeff Gordon merch bus goes up in flames [w/video]

A Jeff Gordon team merchandising bus caught fire on a Georgia freeway.

A bus belonging to NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon caught fire on the side of the I-85 freeway in Georgia Wednesday afternoon as it was headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Avocare 500 this weekend, the West Jackson Fire Department reports. There were no injuries, and Gordon was not onboard what appears to be a team merchandising bus, authorities say.

Firefighters shut down the southbound side of the freeway while they put out the flames, and they say the fire didn’t spread to the trailer being towed by the bus.

The fire department didn’t mention what caused the fire. Perhaps somebody dropped a cigarette onto some hard liquor while sorting bobble heads? What happens on the tour bus stays on the tour bus… Check out the fire department’s press release and watch a video report below.

NASCAR star Jeff Gorvette will compete in CARS 2

Our onslaught of CARS 2 character debuts continues this week with an exclusive reveal just for Autoblog readers. Pixar is letting us announce that NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon will make an appearance in the film as Jeff Gorvette, an up-and-coming Chevrolet Corvette C6.R that’s “turning hoods wherever he competes.”

More than just a cameo, Gordon’s character will compete as a “respected competitor – and legitimate threat – at the World Grand Prix.” Pixar makes no obvious connection to Gordon’s actual roots in NASCAR, but the character of Jeff Gorvette is a Chevrolet and will wear #24 like Gordon’s actual racecar, although obviously it isn’t an Impala. We’re not sure how the Corvette Racing team that just finished 3rd and 4th in this past weekend’s season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring feels about having an oval racer portray its beloved C6.R GT2 car on film, but Pixar needed an accomplished road-racing car and probably wasn’t interested in a character named Jeff Gimpala.

We’re also privileged to announce that Darrell Waltrip will be returning as a character in CARS 2, reprising his role as racing announcer Darrell Cartrip, the “Kentucky-born #17 Chevrolet Monte Carlo known for his wild color commentary.” He’s graduated from being a Piston Cup announcer and will be on-hand to call the World Grand Prix in the sequel.

There’s just something about watching a Porsche 911 play in the dirt that flips all the right switches. Seeing that iconic shape throw rooster tails of silt triggers a sort of Pavlovian response brought on by years of daydreaming over shots of the Rothman 953 slinging sand in Africa. Consider that doubly true for Jeff Zwart’s Pikes Peak-winning GT3.

Zwart has just released a video of one of his shake-down runs prior to this year’s Pikes Peak event. The course runs up some godforsaken mountain in the middle of the California wilderness, and while Zwart isn’t seen flogging the life out of the car, it’s more than clear that both he and the machine are in their element. Jeff Zwart’s Porsche 911 GT3 scales Pikes Peak – Click above to watch video after the jump

We’ve seen footage of Jeff Zwart practicing for his recent run up Pikes Peak, now filmmaker Will Roegge has delivered unto us the footage from Zwart’s Time Attack 2WD class record.

Zwart ran his 911 GT3 up 12.42 miles and through 156 turns in just 11:31.095, averaging over 65 miles per hour. But you don’t need us to tell you about it – these things tend to speak for themselves. Follow the jump to watch a record being set.
