BMW 1 Series facelift spy shot - front three-quarter view

As BMW prepares to launch its new 2 Series lineup, it appears that the current 1 Series is going to get a little attention for itself. Based on these spy photos, the 1 Series hatchback (F20/F21), which is not offered in the US, will be getting a minor facelift in the near future.

From what we can see in these images, the updated 1 Series will definitely be getting a tweaked front end, with most of the attention focusing on the air intakes and grille. Our shooter tells us that it is possible that the headlights may yet be reworked in some way by the time we see this car in production form. It still isn’t clear if we’ll ever see this bodystyle or the next-gen 1 Series in the US, but our most recent report seems to indicate that the car’s fortunes will depend somewhat on how well the Mercedes CLA-Class and Audi A3 sell.

UPS truck gets SHO transplant, flame job

UPS Hot Rod parcel truck

When it comes to getting packages where they’re going, few crews are more on point than the team at UPS. Whether it’s across the state or around the world, Brown gets your gear where it’s going with a quickness. The company has used a fleet of proprietary delivery trucks since 1966, but judging from what American Trucker just discovered, someone’s been turning some wrenches after hours. As it turns out, UPS has its own Hot Rod delivery special. Along with one wicked flame paint job and wild wheels, the beast packs something truly under its fiberglass hood.

Instead of a tired old diesel mill, a super-high output Ford Racing V8 dumps 500 horsepower on the rear wheels via a manual gearbox. As if that wasn’t enough to raise some eyebrows, the engine supposedly runs off of straight alcohol for a clean-burning machine that can light the rear rubber on command. We dig the truck, but if it were ours, we’d be rocking stock wheels and a standard coat of UPS brown paint for the ultimate sleeper. Head over to SPEED to check out the video for yourself.

Crazy Russian parking job – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Parking can be the toughest part of any commute, unless of course you’ve gone to the Ken Block School of Parallel Precision. Beyond the jump is a very short clip a Russian driver who didn’t have time to turn around and park like the rest of us, so (we’re guessing) he jammed the parking brake at speed, spun 180 degrees and landed right where he needed to be.

This clip isn’t exactly new, but it’s new to us. Hit the jump to check it out. Thanks for the tip, Matt!

PS: Anyone else wonder if the driver might be related to this guy?

Volkswagen

Former Car and Driver executive editor and veteran automotive journalist Mark Gillies has signed on with the Volkswagen PR machine as product and technology communications manager. Gillies spent 28 years making the rounds among automotive publications, working as an editor at David E. Davis, Jr.’s Automobile Magazine, and churning out copy for England’s CAR and Autocar. Gillies also spent time hunting down stories for AutoWeek and Classic & Sportscar.

In his new role at Volkswagen, the former scoop will report to Scott Vazin, the company’s newly-hired vice president for public relations formerly from Nissan. As a former journo, Gillies will be shouldered with helping to promote new VW products and technologies.

Gillies’ new boss has been working in the automotive PR business for more than 20 years, getting his start at Mitsubishi in 1990. From there, he moved on to a job at Nissan, finishing his time there as general manager of Corporate and Public Communications in Europe.

Vazin starts his new job on April 18, followed by Gillies on May 1.

Drivers wanted: Repairacar offers car nut’s dream job

For most of us, the opportunity to drive a rotating assemblage of the world’s finest cars, from the Ferrari 458 Italia to the Bugatti Veyron to the Bentley Mulsanne, is an unattainable dream. For one person, though, the dream could become a job. British repair shop Repairacar is looking for a responsible person to pick up and return customers’ supercars from all over Europe.

The job entails taking public transportation to the customer’s house, picking up their car, driving it to Repairacar for whatever service or fix it needs, and driving it back to the owner once repairs have been made. According to Repairacar, assignments could come from every corner of Europe, necessitating spending a lot of time on public transportation. The reward, though, should make the bus or train ride well worth it.

Because of the high-liability nature of the job, Repairacar is being very particular about whom it will hire. Ten years’ experience with high-performance driving is a requirement of the job, and showing up for your interview in a Civic with a fart pipe will likely get you automatically disqualified. Repairacar says the pay is around $50,000 a year, plus expenses for travel. Applications close at the end of April.

Report: PR guy behind Chrysler Twitter debacle gets new job

Filed under: Etc., Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Marketing/Advertising, Chrysler, Ford

scott bartosiewicz, twitter f-bomb dropper

Everybody deserves a second chance, even the guy who dropped an F-bomb on the official Chrysler Twitter account. The Detroit News reports that Scott Bartosiewicz, the former New Media Strategies employee who accidently sent an expletive-laden tweet expressing frustration about his fellow Detroit motorists, has been hired by the Arts, Beats and Eats in Royal Oak, MI to bolster the suburban Detroit event’s Twitter presence. The annual art, food, and music festival is sponsored by Ford, which is one F-word Bartosiewicz is sure to drop on a regular basis.

It’s nice to see Arts, Beats and Eats give Bartosiewicz a second chance to earn a living, but unfortunately for his former employer, the marketing firm is still without the Chrysler account. Bartosiewicz has hired a lawyer to look into whether his TweetDeck utility accidentally sent his personal profane text to the wrong account.

Followup: Chrysler fires 13 workers involved in drinking on the job, suspends two

Filed under: Etc., Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Chrysler, UAW/Unions

Chrysler workers enjoying their break

A group of Chrysler employees have been in the news lately, causing a bit of a black eye for the automaker. Originally, a Detroit Fox affiliate snagged video of the UAW members really enjoying their break – by smoking weed and drinking beer. Chrysler reacted to the news swiftly, by identifying and suspending 15 employees who were ID’d in the clip. Now, after taking time to investigate the entire incident, Chrysler has put the hammer down – 13 of the Jefferson North Plant employees have been fired and the other two get an unpaid, one-month “vacation.”

It’s a shame that this happened, but it’s good to see Chrysler respond so quickly. The automaker has issued a brief statement on the matter, which you can read after the jump.
