Jimmy Girvan and Mike Ramsay head out for stage one – Click above to watch video after the jump

James “Jimmy” Girvan, former Scottish Rally Champion, has died as a result of a crash at the this past weekend’s Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally in Scotland. According to the BBC News, Girvan’s Subaru Impreza collided with some boulders then was thrown into the surrounding trees. Mike Ramsay, Girvan’s co-driver, had to be cut free from the vehicle but he escaped with a minor arm injury. Jimmy Girvan, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the tragic accident, race organizers shut down the event, which itself serves as a memorial to legendary driver Colin McRae who was killed in a helicopter accident in 2007.

We have video footage of the rally cars heading out from the first stage, including Girvan’s red Subaru Impreza. It was the last stage he finished at the event before his crash in Stage 2. You can watch the video after the jump, with Girvan and Ramsay pulling up to the starting line around the 1:20 mark. Our deepest sympathies go out to Girvan’s family, friends and colleagues. Thanks for the tips, all.

Segway X2 AdventureAccording to the BBC, Jimi Heselden, the CEO of Hesco Bastion, was killed on Sunday, September 26 when he apparently rode his Segway off of a cliff and into a river. Hesco Bastion sells Segway self-balancing scooters in the UK market.

According to the story, police were called after reports came in that a man had fallen into a wharf in West Yorkshire. Heselden and a “Segway-type device” were found in the water, and the scooter mogul was pronounced dead at the scene. Heselden made his fortune in the manufacturing sector and founded his corporation in the tough neighborhood where he grew up.

Heselden was also a generous philanthropist, donating a total of 23 million to various charities during his life. Earlier this month, the 62-year-old businessman donated 10 million to a Leeds community organization. The BBC quoted a spokesperson for Hesco Bastion as saying Heselden will be remembered both for his generosity and his pride in the Leeds area. Thanks to everyone for the tips.

Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa killed in San Marino Grand Prix crash

Shoya Tomizawa

Less than a week after 13-year-old Peter Lenz was killed in a crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, another motorcyclist’s life has been claimed at the track.

Shoya Tomizawa was on his 15th lap at the Misano circuit during the San Marino Grand Prix when he apparently lost control of his Moto2 bike at full speed, was thrown off the bike and then hit by two other riders before sliding 130 feet to a halt.

Tomizawa was taken to a local hospital immediately after the crash and succumbed to his injuries soon thereafter.

The Moto2 rider had moved up the ranks since beginning in pocketbike racing when he was only three years old, eventually graduating to the 125 class. This year, he took a win at Qatar and sat seventh overall in the standings.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to Tomizawa’s family, friends and fans.
