A study released by TrueCar.com revealed that 7.4 percent of Lamborghini buyers in 2010 were women, a 2.2-percent rise over the previous year. Rolls-Royce and Ferrari also saw an increase in purchases by females, with Rolls climbing from eight percent to 9.3 percent and Ferrari going from 5.1 percent to 6.4 percent.

Those increases take the number of ladies who buy exotics from next-to-nothing to very small, but an increase is an increase. TrueCar doesn’t offer an explanation as to what may have caused the uptick. Got any ideas? Leave ’em in the ‘Comments’ below.

Overall, the survey showed that females are far more likely to buy an inexpensive and practical car than males, who are much more likely to opt for big, brawny cars. According to the study, the top 10 cars that sold more than 50 percent of the time to women were the Volkswagen New Beetle, Kia Spectra, Nissan Rogue, Volkswagen Eos, Hyundai Entourage, Volvo S40, Jeep Compass, Honda CR-V, Nissan Sentra and the Hyundai Tucson. Surely you saw some of those coming…

Conversely, the list for men was far less practical (excepting pickup trucks, of course) and far faster. It included the Porsche 911, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series, BMW M3, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tundra, Dodge Ram and the Audi S5. Well done, men – that’s not a bad lookin’ list right there. Check out more details and commentary in the press release after the break.

The 2011 JEC Composite Show is currently taking place in Paris, and if we were there, our eyes would be treated to the naked beauty that is the Lamborghini Aventador’s rolling chassis.

Lamborghini’s Aventador LP700-4’s chassis is a perfect fit for the JEC show, as it’s constructed with a reinforced carbon fiber composite. The composite material was developed by Lamborghini, working in conjunction with engineers at Boeing. Composite materials are also used in the construction of the wheels, frame, seats and a handful of other Aventador parts. Follow the jump for the full press release.

Lamborghini delivered one of the first of its latest Aventador supercars to a dealership in Berlin recently, blocking traffic and generating quite a crowd on a busy street. Despite some awkward maneuvers in busy traffic, nobody seemed to care… at least not once the Aventador’s 7.0-liter V12 fired.

The best part of the clip by far is the Aventador’s hostile cackle, even without turning much above idle through the entire video. In spite of it being shot in grainy medium-resolution, the latest big Lambo looks as good out in public as it does all gussied up for the auto show circuit. Click past the jump to check out the full video. Thanks for the tip, Rick!

Video: Fire destroys 1974 Lamborghini Espada

A man in Bloomfield Township, Michigan was trying to start his 1974 Lamborghini Espada when the car caught fire in the garage of a house he had just sold. Thankfully the man was unhurt and was able to get his mother and dog out of the house before the fire gutted the lower level and garage.

The new owner had closed on the house a week earlier. Firefighters said the first floor of the house was a total loss and the second story sustained heavy smoke damage. The classic Lambo was toast. Nobody’s sure what exactly caused the car to ignite, but we’d guess carburetors and notoriously faulty electronics have something to do with it. You can watch news coverage of the Lambo inferno after the jump.

Our compatriots over at Edmunds’ Inside Line said it best: The new Lamborghini Aventador looked pretty striking sitting still upon its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this year, but a Raging Bull like this one shouldn’t be sitting still. It needs to be run, and run hard.

Fortunately, our friends had the opportunity to accompany the new Lambo on a video shoot in the Californian desert to let it stretch its legs and get it good and covered in silt. Follow the jump to watch the video footage.

Report: Lamborghini plans surface; include Estoque, Sesto Elemento and Gallardo-replacing Cabrera

Lamborghini range

With the new Aventador now uncovered and sold out for at least the next year, Lamborghini is undoubtedly preparing its next model. And the one after that. And incoming reports have detailed what could be the Raging Bull marque’s product plan for the next several years.

First to come could be the limited-production version of the Sesto Elemento concept car. Rather than taking the place of any current model, the Sesto Elemento could take up a Reventon-like position in the line-up, offering limited numbers at high prices.

The Estoque concept also appears to be edging closer to production, sharing its underpinnings with the next-generation versions of the Porsche Panamera, Audi A8 and Bentley Continental. The four-door model could also be joined by a GT coupe.

Of course, we can expect to see variants of the Aventador coming ’round the mountain as well, including potential Roadster and eventual Super Veloce versions.

Finally the Gallardo will eventually need replacing, and sources suggest that its successor could carry the Cabrera nameplate in reference to a bloodline of famous fighting bulls. Given that the Gallardo has spawned a good dozen variants over the years, you can bet the Cabrera will give rise to a few of its own, as well.

Peeved Lamborghini owner destroys car with sledgehammer, others help

Filed under: Coupe, China, Etc., Lamborghini

smashed lamborghini

Stop! Hammertime? Well, if you’re the owner of this particular Lamborghini Gallardo, you’re not saying stop, but “go, go, go!” According to reports, the happless Gallardo was purchased about six months ago by a resident of Qingdao, China. In his short period of ownership, the man has apparently had a few issues with the car.

In one instance, the Lamborghini wouldn’t start, so the owner had it towed to the local dealer. Upon arrival at the service bay, the owner found that the car had been damaged in transit. No one would claim responsibility and the original non-starting issue still wasn’t fixed.

The Gallardo owner attempted to escalate the issue within the Lamborghini family, ultimately trying to reach out to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. No response or solution has been offered so the owner has become decidedly frustrated. So frustrated, in fact, that he decided destroying his Lamborghini in public would be the best way to garner attention.

According to the report, the owner is trying to make a point that China is home to a growing number of individuals capable of purchasing luxury items. Companies realizes this and are making increased efforts to offer their products to the Chinese people. However, the Lamborghini owner believes that the Chinese people do not get the same level of service found in other markets. By smashing his Gallardo, he’s certainly captured our attention.

By the way, a new Lamborghini Gallardo, which typically sells for $230,000 on up, retails for between $529,000 and $757,000 USD in China. Ouch. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Video: 60 Minutes takes on Lamborghini, circa 1987

1987 Lamborghini Countach on 60 Minutes

1987 Lamborghini Countach – Click above for video after the jump.

Cars have come a long way since 1987, when 60 Minutes sent its dour, gray-suit-clad crew from New York to Italy to have an extended look at the Lamborghini Countach. If nothing else, we’ve become jaded to how much car the Countach actually was, distracted by the fact that its brakes could have been sharper, its road manners more civil and its huge V12 less temperamental.

Yes, this video has made the rounds in years past, but it’s time to revisit it again. We love that Morely Safer gets squired around by a young-looking Valentino Balboni, who takes him to 180 mph on Italian public roads around Sant’Agata. We love that David E. Davis, Jr., then of Automobile Magazine fame, still looks much the same as he does today, waxed mustache and all. The video is strictly non-P.C., and that’s what makes it so good.

From Lamborghini factory drivers terrorizing public roads (they didn’t even have a test track), to its head of marketing breathlessly comparing the Countach to a “beautiful virgin,” the 60 Minutes feature reminds us what Lamborghini should be. If, like some of us, you remember watching this the night it originally aired, clicking past the jump will make for a welcome trip back in time.

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore commemorates 150 years of Italian unification

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore

Typically, automakers unveil new cars at or before a major auto show, not after. Then again, Lamborghini indeed had its hands (and show stand) full at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month with the all-new Aventador. This special edition Gallardo simply would have been overlooked.

Following the Bicolore edition announced a month ago comes the new Tricolore, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. But rather than upgrade on the former with the addition of a third color, the Tricolore arrives in white with the three colors of the Italian flag as an offset stripe, running over the top of the car and through the cabin. And hopefully, unlike its cross-town rival’s latest grand prix racer dedicated for the same occasion, its name won’t be subject to legal action.

The limited edition model is set to be unveiled next week in Turin, when we can expect more details – including the quantity to be built and the specific drivetrain configuration. The Gallardo’s 5.2-liter V10 engine is currently offered in 550-, 560- and 570-horsepower states of tune, driving either the rear wheels or all four, and with manual or e-gear transmissions. Stay tuned for more.

Lamborghini has finally bitten the bullet and started a leasing program for the Gallardo. According to the DuPont Registry, there was enough demand for an alternative ownership program that leasing Lamborghini’s smallest offering made sense.

Gallardos eligible for lease include the 2010-2011 LP560-4 Spyders, 2011 Gallardo LP560-4 Coupe, 2011 LP570-4 Superleggera, and the brand-new LP550-2. The leases are on a 27-month term, and customers are limited to 3,500 miles a year. The program began in January and stops at the end of this month, so you’d better hurry.
