ETC: BMW Ultimate Swimming Machine leaves German police feeling soggy

BMW 3 Series turned into swimming pool

Four men were pulled over in the German town of Eibenstock in what a police report described as “a convertible of a slightly different kind.” What made this BMW 3 Series Convertible different? It was filled with 530 gallons of water. Yes, four German men had turned their car into a swimming pool.

The beige BMW drew the attention of the German polizei after an officer noticed water sloshing over the sides. Following the car into a parking lot, the four occupants hopped out and made a run for it, according to Der Spiegel. Deutsch police are evidently a bit more assertive when it comes to immobilizing vehicles, as the officers reportedly bled the car’s tires of air and went so far as to disconnect the engine’s spark plug wires. The police believe the men were under water under the influence when they fled the scene, and may issue charges, but there’s no mention of whether they’ll be cited for a lack of proper flotation devices.

The convertible had been sealed with “synthetic material,” and was complete with wood railings and Hawaiian-style decorations. We’re quite partial to the work done on the steering wheel. Sadly, the unusual amphibious car only had one functioning gear and a top speed of just 15.5 miles per hour. When asked by German tabloid Bild about the outing, one of the men gave a stock response in this sort of situation: “the ride was a stupid idea.”

ETC: Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rally leaves us bunderstruck

Oscar Mayer Wieners

In the running for the greatest event tag line of 2013 is this: “Six wieners. One winner.” Or how about just Wienermobile Run, which is what Oscar Mayer is putting on with six Wienermobiles crossing the country in search of points and glory.

The social media-driven challenge has the teams – Born to Bun, Speedy Wiener, Autobuhn, Hell on Buns, Drift Dog and Bunderstruck – earn points for fulfilling challenges submitted by you and by Oscar Mayer and by getting their photos plastered all over the gossip-verse. The big dog with the most points at the end, wins.

You can join teams and submit photos and, naturally, win things. It just kicked off on July 9 with all the Wienermobiles in Edgecliff, New Jersey and Born to Bun is already way out in the lead, but there’s still time to take sides with the figure out which Hotdogger in a 27-foot-long is your favorite flavor…

Romeo Ferraris leaves Italy, comes back with a 667-hp carbon fiber Corvette

Ferraris Vette

Think of the words Romeo and Ferraris and you’re bound to think of Italian cars, right? Maybe so, but the two together form the name of an Italian tuning house. And while many of their subjects have been Italian themselves, Romeo Ferraris has been scoping out foreign territory as well.

The latest is the Corvette Z06. And why shouldn’t it be? The ‘Vette has a long history of customization at Italian hands. But those have mostly been cosmetic coachbuilding jobs. This is another story altogether.

RF has taken the Z06 and fitted a supercharger to the 7.0-liter LS7 V8. The result? 667 horsepower and 607 lb-ft of twist. The centrifugal compressor, aluminum intercooler, high-flow injectors and custom exhaust help it get to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and up to 211 mph – assuming you can get all that power down – while 380mm/6-pot brakes up front and 345/4-pot brakes out back help it come back to a stop.

A series of exterior and interior cosmetic modifications have also been carried out, including what appears to be a bare carbon fiber reskin, putting Romeo Ferraris’ Z06 toe to toe with Chevy’s own factory ZR1 in more ways than one.
