Lexus boss Templin says brand to lose luxury sales crown over Japan quake

mark templin lexus vp Lexus has been the king of luxury car sales in the U.S. for over a decade, but Toyota’s high-end brand will likely lose its crown in 2011, due at least in part to the March 11 earthquake in Japan.

Certainly, Lexus was already facing a great deal of pressure from rivals like BMW and Buick, but Automotive News reports that Toyota VP and Lexus Group Manager Mark Templin says dealers are down to a 30-day supply of most models, and that vehicle shortages will be felt as early as this week. The problem is that some key components from Japan come from plants that are still shut down as a result of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The Lexus CT 200h is reportedly close to sold out due to the issues.

Further complicating matters is the fact that Lexus ramped up the leasing business three years ago, and those customers will soon be bringing back their luxury rides in large numbers. That’s good news for dealers looking for products to sell, but it’s bad for customers who may not have the ability to purchase a new Lexus model.

The automaker is looking to ease this issue by offering six-month lease extensions. At the same time, Templin knows many customers will simply purchase their lease vehicle outright, and he’s asking dealers not to gouge those customers. The fear is that a shortage of models will result in more demand than supply, which could then jack up the price of Lexus models to unreasonable levels.

Since the automaker appears to be out of the running for the 2011 luxury sales crown, it seems natural that Lexus will come back with a vengeance in 2012. But Templin says the automaker may never again grab the sales crown, since luxury car makers are aiming down-market to improve corporate fuel economy averages. Templin opines that it won’t be long before a luxury car maker hits 500,000 sales in a year.

Fox Marketing supercharges the Lexus CT 200h [w/video]

Fox Marketing has given Lexus’ entry-level hybrid some much-needed teeth, adding an Eaton supercharger to the 2011 CT 200h. The huffer forces air through a Climax Racing intake manifold, helping the CT’s 1.8-liter four pot crank out 300 high-voltage ponies.

Fox also says it beefed up the car’s batteries, but details on what exactly the company did are nil. The added power means the CT 200h has to work a little harder to stay pointed in the right direction, which Fox addressed with a full-on custom suspension and enormous Baer brakes. The 13-inch Baers sit behind a set of 20-inch wheels sporting a huge offset and healthy 225/30-series meats up front and 255/30s at the back.

You’d think that a 300-horsepower hybrid would make an excellent sleeper, but that’s just not Fox Marketing’s style. Instead, it cloaked the little Lexus in metallic burnt orange paint, and draped it in a wide body kit, featuring huge three-inch fender flares. Inside, there’s a set of Yonaka racing seats complemented with LED Lexus logos on the door panels. Check out a video clip of the car after the jump.

New York 2011: Lexus LF-Gh Concept shows off the new face of the brand

Lexus LF-Gh Concept

Lexus LF-Gh Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Last week we gave you the first look at the Lexus’ new hybrid concept car, the LF-Gh, and now we have live photos from the car’s official unveiling a day ahead of the New York Auto Show. The LF-Gh debuts Lexus’ future direction in style that includes an “aggressive and bold spindle-shaped front grille” accented by LED lighting both front and rear. The look is a departure from the brand’s generally conservative styling, and it should be interesting to see how this new fascia integrates into future Lexus production cars.

Lexus didn’t open up the doors or the hood, but says that a hybrid powerplant provides the LF-Gh’s motivation and that the interior will provide a look at future designs highlighted by a three-dimensional analog clock. You can read the full Lexus PR after the jump, or get a better look at the car in the high-res gallery below.

Lexus LF-Gh Concept

Lexus has decided to pull the wraps off its LF-Gh – which stands for Lexus Future Grand-Touring Hybrid – ahead of its official debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show. Interestingly, Lexus itself describes the styling of its latest conceptual hybrid sedan as something of a contradiction in terms. Says Kengo Matsumoto, general manager of Toyota’s Lexus Design Division:

For this concept, Lexus designers studied characteristics that are often considered contradictory and difficult to execute together. The captivating design of the LF-Gh concept examines the possibility of balancing what are normally opposing qualities, such as style and functionality.

Expect such offbeat styling details to make an appearance on future Lexus production models, including what the company is calling its “aggressive and bold spindle-shaped front grille.”

As a grand-touring sedan, Lexus says the rear-wheel-drive LF-Gh will offer plenty of room for “multiple occupants at higher speeds on long-distance drives.” We don’t have any real detailed photos of the car’s interior, but the automaker claims it hints at “an all-new, future Lexus interior” that incorporates a new three-dimensional analog clock, whatever that means.

As you’d expect from any new concept from the global leader in hybrids, the LF-Gh Concept features a hybridized powertrain of unknown specification. We do find it interesting, though, that Lexus is purposely trying to diminish the appearance of the car’s exhaust in an effort to “suggest that the flow of exhaust gas will be substantially reduced.”

Stay tuned for live images from the show floor in New York later this month. In the meantime, feel free to check out the official press release after the break and be sure to take a nice, long gander at the high-res image gallery below.

Lexus teases LF-Gh concept ahead of New York debut

2011 Lexus LF-Gh concept teaser

Lexus LF-Gh conceptAs promised, Lexus is preparing to land at the New York Auto Show with a conceptual preview for the next-generation GS sedan. That model has essentially been an evolution of the Giugiaro design that debuted on the original GS way back in 1991, but the new concept promises to show the way forward; not just for the mid-range Lexus sedan, but for the entire brand.

The Toyota luxury division has confirmed the debut of the LF-Gh – shorthand for Lexus Future Grand-Touring Hybrid (of course) – with the release of these two teaser shots and the press statement we’ve posted after the jump. Lexus says the car will spearhead the next step in its L-Finesse design language that’s been in play for a decade now.

From what we can tell from the crop-shots, the LF-Gh looks to blend some of the aggression we’ve seen on Audi concepts of late with some thoroughly Japanese-looking design flourishes, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see the big picture. In any case, click past the break to read the short statement and be sure to check out high-res versions of the two teasers in our gallery below.

Lexus confirms LF-Gh concept for New York Auto Show

Next-generation Lexus GS spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

A couple weeks back, we told you that Toyota had big plans for the New York Auto Show. We heard that one of the vehicles scheduled to make an appearance was the totally redesigned Lexus GS, but what we’re going to get instead is the LF-Gh hybrid concept. Lexus tells us that the concept “will present a glimpse into the future of Lexus design.”

We’re all for a concept car that reveals future styling direction, but we were really hoping to see a production a replacement for the aging sport sedan. Thankfully, our sources tell us that the LF-Gh and the next-generation GS should be one and the same, though we’re certain the concept car will feature styling cues (read: massive wheels, ridiculous interior, etc.) that won’t make it anywhere near production.

Lexus will officially unveil the LF-Gh on the evening of April 19, and you can expect a full report right here on Autoblog within minutes of the unveiling.

Lexus LS460 with champagne glasses stacked on its hood

Lexus champagne glass re-creation – click above to watch video after the jump

In response to the Lexus owner who unsuccessfully attempted to re-create the now-classic 1990 tv commercial that launched the brand, Lexus proves it’s still possible. Cleverly showing that it’s paying attention, Lexus took the time to pull a 2011 LS460 and 1990 LS400 into the garage, level them (that’s the key!) and run the respective V8s up north of 4,000 rpm. In all cases, the stack of champagne glasses remained unperturbed on either hood. Good show of customer-engagement moxie. Check it out after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Jub!
