Swedish design firm Visualtech has confirmed it will build a very limited run of production cars based on its Growler E, a reimagining of the Jaguar E-Type. According to the company, plans are to have the first Growler ready for delivery in the summer of 2012.

Speaking of plans, the current goal is to produce three or four of the cars to be finished simultaneously. If there’s overwhelming demand, Visualtech may decided to build a very short series run of the cars, with help from Steyr or Finnish firm Valmet.

The car is to be powered by a Jaguar XKR-sourced 5.0-liter supercharged V8. With a few choice tweaks, the Growler should close in on the 600-horsepower mark. Visualtech hopes that will lead to a 0-60 run under 4 seconds.

The Growler will have a composite body glued to a carbon fiber structure, with front and rear tube frames holding the running gear. Should you have the wherewithal to order a Growler, expect to pay nearly $700,000 if they make a series run, and closer to $1.4 million if they only make a few.

Volvo is celebrating the start of its fourth Ocean Race by releasing special edition models of its V60, XC60 and XC70 in the UK. The cars will be available to order starting in April, with the first deliveries expected to take place in July.

Engine options are yet to be determined, but the cars will have special interiors in sail-reminiscent off-black or beige, and the seatbacks come embossed with the Volvo Ocean Race logo. There will also be two special exterior colors available, dubbed “Volvo Ocean Blue II” and “Electric Silver.”

Along with the seats, the door panels and cargo covers get the Ocean Race treatment, with special script and stitching. If that isn’t enough Nautical madness for you, you can rest your Sperrys on a set of textile sail-inspired floor mats to cap it all off.

Volvo is expecting to move about 7,500 of the special editions per year, targeting England, Germany and Italy in particular. No word yet on pricing or whether the cars come with a stuffed parrot for full-on pirate effect. Hit the jump for the press release.

Ford releases new version of the Fiesta S1600, limited to just 500 units

Filed under: Car Buying, Hatchback, Ford, UK

ford fiesta s1600

Another day, another hot-hatch that the United Kingdom can enjoy while thumbing their nose at our relative lack of hot-hatchitude here in the States. Ford has just announced another limited-edition run of Fiesta S1600 hatchbacks.

In 2010, Ford released a 650-car run of 118-horsepower Fiesta S1600 three-doors. A new version for 2011 uses the same engine but ups the power ante to 132 horsepower at 6,700 rpm and 118 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm.

On the outside, the Ford Fiesta S1600 receives a lower front valence, larger side sills, a rear spoiler, rear diffuser and white 17-inch alloy wheels. The car is available in Frozen White or Performance Blue and both color choices get a pair of contrasting center stripes. The S1600 gets upgraded parts on the interior as well. Leather lines the heated sports seats, handbrake cover, gear level and steering wheel.

The Ford Fiesta S1600 will be limited to just 500 units and wears a price tag of £15,895, or nearly $26,000 USD. It doesn’t matter how much it costs in U.S. Dollars though because we can’t buy it here. That said, feel free to read all about what you’ll likely be missing in the press release after the break.

Lamborghini Gallardo Singapore Limited Edition lands in the Far East

Lamborghini Gallardo Singapore Limited Edition

Markets in the Far East are increasingly vital for high-end automakers like Lamborghini. The Italian purveyor of exotic supercars has been in the Singapore market, specifically, for ten years. Now, to celebrate the milestone, Lamborghini has produced a very limited run of special-edition Gallardos exclusive to Singapore.

The Singapore-themed Gallardo was created in partnership between the factory and its Singapore importer. Available in white or black, the Singapore Limited Edition wears a set of red side stripes accented by a badge featuring the Merlion – the lion-headed fish mascot created by the Singapore Tourism Board in the 1964.

Only ten examples of the car were produced, and all have apparently been spoken for. Delivery of the entire run recently took place at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Singapore. S$20,000 (about $15k in equivalent American funds) of the proceeds from each Singapore Limited Edition Gallardo sold went to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund to benefit underprivileged students. Lexus has just released a limited-edition version of the IS 350C convertible that will go on sale later this month. Called the F Sport Special Edition, the droptop is limited to a scant 175 units, priced from $55,120, not including delivery and processing fees.

To set it apart from other IS 350Cs, the F Sport Special Edition benefits from a few visual tweaks. It rides on 19-inch forged alloy wheels with a dark graphite finish and the only two exterior colors available are Starfire Pearl (pictured) or Obsidian. Other F Sport touches include Bilstein shocks and lowering springs that bring the IS one inch closer to the ground, and a unique sway bar set has been added, too.

The interior is padded with black and red leather surfaces, and both heated and cooled seats are standard. Navigation is also part of the Special Edition package, encompassing things like a rearview camera, Lexus Enform and the full host of XM infotainment features. Hit the jump for the official press blast.

Wait ‘Till They Get A Load Of This

They call it a reboot. It happens all the time in Hollywood when a movie franchise falls flat. After a blockbuster wears out its audience with a string of lesser sequels, the studio starts over, retelling the story from an entirely new angle.

The best example is Batman. The combination of Michael Keaton and director Tim Burton produced critical acclaim and big box office numbers for the first two Caped Crusader films in 1989 and 1992. Then came a new director, Joel Schumacher, who just about killed the franchise with Batman Forever in 1995 and Batman & Robin in 1997. Eight years passed before someone in Hollywood realized the Dark Knight’s name could still fill theater seats, and the franchise was rebooted in 2005 with the dark and gritty Batman Begins.

The totally redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer is the Blue Oval’s Batman Begins. Ford’s most famous sport utility vehicle has desperately needed a reboot ever since the Firestone tire recall in 2000 made it Rollover Enemy Number One. Rising gas prices haven’t helped either, but the tire debacle hurt the brand badly, with the Explorer going from this country’s third best-selling vehicle in 2000 with 445,157 sold to just over 60,000 bought in 2010. But just like Batman, the Explorer name had value that Ford couldn’t let go to waste. And so the 2011 Explorer is the sport utility story retold by Ford from an entirely new angle. The question is whether or not the Explorer’s name can still put butts in seats.

Report: 261-mpg Volkswagen XL1 to enter limited production

Volkswagen Formula XL1 Concept

Well, what do you know? When Volkswagen decided to show off the latest version of its so-called one-liter car, the Formula XL1, at the Qatar Motor Show, we wondered out loud whether or not the German automaker would actually manage to put it into production. As it turns out, that’s the plan, albeit at a very small scale.

According to Automobilwoche (sub. req’d, via The Truth About Cars), Volkswagen will build 100 XL1s as a small batch of regular production machines… meaning they’ll actually be offered for sale to the general populace. No word on what will power the production models, but the concept features a two-cylinder TDI engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. All that fuel-sipping goodness is enough to achieve an astonishing 0.9L/100 km – just over 261 mpg.

Germany will reportedly get first crack at the XL1, followed by the United States and China. Color us surprised that VW actually plans to produce a nearly 300-mpg machine, going to the trouble of putting it through safety and emissions tests and all that goes along with making it legal, for such a small batch of vehicles. Surprised, but pleased, while also a bit skeptical it will ultimately happen. Projects like these are usually the first to get cut when the global economy forces belts to be tightened.

Chevy offers free driving school to all Corvette buyers for limited time

2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Convertible

We operate under the impression that on the whole we live in the best period of automotive innovation and power that the world has ever seen. Manufacturers are turning out four-cylinder engines with more horsepower and torque than the mighty V8 lumps of just two decades ago and eight pots that boast fuel economy numbers as impressive as their dyno charts. These days, mega power is mega cheap and more accessible than ever. But, as Uncle Ben reminds us, great power comes with great responsibility, and to that end General Motors is offering all Corvette buyers a chance to learn how to get the most out of their machines.

For a limited time, GM is giving away vouchers to both of the company’s Corvette Driving Schools to anyone who buys any model of a new Corvette. Typically, the driving schools are free only to those who lay down the coin for a mighty ZR1, but for a limited time, The General is splurging for Coupe, Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 buyers to go on the company’s dime. The schools are at the Bob Bondurant school in Phoenix, Arizona and Ron Fellows school in Las Vegas, Arizona.

McLaren brings back the SLR for a limited-edition swan song

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s been a year since the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was discontinued. 2,000 examples of five different variants of the extravagant supercar were made over the course of five years of production. And in its wake, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren have gone their separate ways, both on the track and off. Both have been keeping plenty busy since the divorce, but they’ve apparently gotten back together for one last hurrah.

Apparently created by McLaren as an aftermarket kit for existing models and unveiled at the Essen Motor Show (think of it as Germany’s SEMA), this McLaren Edition SLR packs revised aerodyanamics, steering, suspension and interior. The result is an exclusive swan-song for the exotic McMerc (only 25 examples will be offered), and it looks like it’s mated with a MG SV. Take a closer look with the images below and the video after the jump, where you may notice that the Mercedes part of the equation has been decidedly de-emphasized.

Limited-edition Nike Dunk 6.0 ‘DeLorean’ shoes run to the top of our holiday wish-list

We internet types don’t always condone the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn on Black Friday for some mad-dash holiday shopping, but if there was ever a product we’d wait in line for, this might just be it. Starting this Friday, November 26, Nike will be selling its brand-new Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoe, modeled after what is perhaps the most iconic movie car of all time, the DMC-12 from Back to the Future.

Our favorite stainless-steel sports car has been reinterpreted in the form of this seriously sweet pair of kicks, featuring a matte silver, no-sew constructed upper body. The shoe’s sole mimics the DMC-12’s 80’s-tastic taillights, and there’s even a Belfast stamp on the tongue, giving a hat tip to the Irish factory where John Z’s machines were originally produced. It even comes in a gullwing-inspired box.

No official details have been released as to how many pairs of these special shoes will be produced or what they will cost, though a few online sources have cited that 1,000 pairs will be available worldwide. Knowing our luck, these hot kicks will surely sell out faster than you can shout, “Eighty-eight miles an hour!”
