2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe configurator goes live, causes momentary consideration of kidney sale

The 2011 BMW 1M is a highly anticipated two-door said to be created to remind drivers of the 1988 M3. Though it weighs nearly 400 pounds more than the E30 M3, the new 1M does get 340 horsepower courtesy of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. If those numbers are intriguing, you may want to head to BMW and see how much it will cost you to own one.

We tested out the configurator for ourselves, and our Alpine White 1M is going to add $53,735 to our AmEx balance. The wife may throw a fit, but we’ll probably never see her again anyway… Time to start writing from the road. Thanks for the tip, Luis!

Lamborghini Aventador configurator goes live

While it’s not as fun to play with as the Bugatti Veyron configurator or even the Novitec Rosso 458 Italia configurator, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 web toy is up and running. Sadly, all you can do is pick exterior and interior color combinations, meaning the build-your-own Aventador site isn’t as much of a time-waster ~~as we’d like it to be~~ as you’d think.

We decided to go with Giallo Orion, a pearl yellow color, for our Aventador. A supercar should be bright and obnoxious, and this paint scheme certainly does the job. However, if you are feeling sinister, there is a matte black color option called Nero Nemesis, but if you opt for that stealthy color, you should just go ahead and change your name to Bonda… Giacomo Bonda. Head over to the Aventador website and paint the Lambo of your dreams now. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Chicago 2011: 2012 Buick Regal eAssist live in the Windy City

We received the first details about Buick’s new Regal eAssist earlier today, but we’ve just returned from seeing the car in person before the Chicago Auto Show officially kicks off tomorrow. Visually, the more fuel-efficient Regal looks no different than the standard car, save the addition of eco-friendly 17-inch alloy wheels and low-rolling-resistance tires.

What’s most important about this car is what’s under the hood – a 15-kilowatt electric motor that offers 15 horsepower and 110 pound-feet of torque for initial acceleration thrust, matched with Buick’s 2.4-liter direct-injected inline-four. Combine that with regenerative braking and a start/stop system for the engine, and the end result is a Regal that’s capable of achieving 26 miles per gallon in the city and 37 mpg highway.

Buick’s new eAssist system first debuted on the larger LaCrosse sedan, where it will serve as the base powertrain for 2012 model year vehicles. With the Regal, however, the eAssist model will slot just above the base 2.4-liter car and below the Regal Turbo, which uses the automaker’s 220-horsepower 2.0-liter Ecotec inline-four. Pricing will be announced closer to the eAssist’s official launch later this year.

Ford showcasing live teardown of F-150 EcoBoost engine during Detroit Auto Show

After surviving some of the most heinous abuse that the engineers at Ford cold dream up, the same 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 engine that pulled logs, raced in Baja and towed 11,300 pounds for 24 hours straight will be dissected in front of the crowds at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. The stunt gets started on January 15 at 11 a.m., and Ford is hoping to be able to show off exactly how well its new V6 workhorse held up against the equivalent of 160,000 miles of torture.

Ford has come out with a bare-knuckle advertising campaign to prove that it’s smaller-displacement, turbocharged engine can not only dish out equivalent power while using less fuel, but that it can stand up to the kind of work that pickup trucks are meant to endure. After wrapping up competition in the Baja 1000, Ford pulled its Ecoboost engine to perform dyno tests, and found that even after all of the beatings, the lump still churned out the same 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque that it left the factory with. Porsche to live stream new concept reveal in Detroit

Porsche hasn’t bothered to show up to the Detroit Auto Show for the past couple years, but the German sports car maker intends to come back with a vengeance in 2011. We’ve been promised a world premiere, and while we’ll be there to cover the unveiling from Cobo Hall, you don’t need a press pass or fly into Detroit to see the live unveiling. Porsche plans to broadcast the event via webcast at www.porsche.com/detroit, and what you’ll see during the show is anyone’s guess.

Earlier in the month Porsche told Bloomberg that it was planning “something spectacular” for Detroit, which makes us think (hope) we’ll see a production super-Porsche based off the 918 Spyder concept. Another option could be the world debut of the long-rumored sub-Boxster model rumored to based off the VW BlueSport concept. We won’t beat ourselves up too much thinking about it, though, since Detroit is only a couple weeks away. Hit the jump to read the Porsche presser.

If you’re like us, you’ve been hiding from friends and family this holiday season by burying yourself in the loving, automotive arms of Gran Turismo 5. You also likely know that the game was well worth the seemingly endless wait. But while rubbing Jaguar E-Type fenders with the Italian metal of a Lamborghini Miura is as much fun as you’re likely to have in front of a TV, there’s just nothing quite like the real thing. With that in mind, Sony and Polyphony Digital pulled off an interesting stunt to advertise their newest creation – unleashing a hoard of exotic racers on the unsuspecting Champs Élysées in Paris, complete with genuine pit stops.

Metal like the Lamborghini Murciélago Superveloce, Audi R8 and even Nissan GT-R all spent a bit of time playing in the rain in a mock-race. There’s no word on who took the checkers, but the stunt was clearly a winner with the crowds. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.

Electronic Arts isn’t pulling any punches in the run-up to the release of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. The studio sent two of the world’s most lust-worthy Italilan exotics to go frolic through the countryside in a live-action interpretation of the game’s premise. The video stars one wayward Pagani Zonda Cinque on the run from a very stubborn Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 and its accompanying air support. The whole tale is set to La Roux’s “Not Your Toy” remixed by the ever crafty Nero. It’s as fitting a soundtrack as we could imagine.

The video is, of course, dripping with high-horsepower slides and vaporized rear tires at the hands of legendary stunt drivers Marc Hennerici and Marc Basseng. Sound appetizing? Hit the jump to sink your teeth into the jaw-dropping spot.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is a nimble, compact sedan that could potentially turn into a top seller for General Motors. Apparently, it’s also a fan of classic video games. Well, at least the Chinese ad agency that dreamed up this interesting ad for it certainly is. A large room serves as the stage for a full-size representation of the Pac-Man universe. A white Chevy Cruze plays the part of Mr. Pac-Man while a series of Black Cruzes represent the ghosts.

The video is well made but could use a little more substance beyond the driving and background music. However, the song will be with you all day. A bit of a warning though, the song has a few swears in it, which is funny because either the ad agency didn’t notice them or just doesn’t care. Also, the ghosts should be multi-colored, and it would have been really hilarious if they were old Cavaliers.

Check out the commercial after the jump. If you end up enjoying the music, the name of the band is The League and the song is called “F* RNR”.

We have a date. The History Channel has bombarded the web with a couple of quick teasers for the first season of Top Gear USA, and snugged between the epic visions of powersliding muscle is word that the show will debut on November 21st. Now, we know that saying this show has big shoes to fill is an understatement the size of Clarkson’s ego, but judging from what we’ve seen so far, TG USA looks well worth watching.

It may not have the same charm as the UK production, but we’re guessing it will have no problem flipping all of the right octane-laced switches. Hit the jump for a taste of what Rutledge Wood, Adam Ferrara and Tanner Foust have planned for the first season and let us know if we’re wrong.

Nissan is running around the country to promote its all-electric Leaf. The Drive Electric tour has already had two stops in California – the AltCar Expo in Santa Monica and the Orange County Auto Show in Anaheim – and a third one is planned for this coming weekend. SoCal residents, this is your opportunity to get behind the wheel of a 2011 Nissan Leaf and see what it’s like to drive a full-size electric vehicle.

The San Diego stop of the Drive Electric tour is located at the NTC Promenade. The event kicks off today and will be open from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM. The EVs will be in San Diego through Sunday, October 17th.
