stolen 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS 409

The weeklong festivities that take place in Monterey, CA for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance draw in some of the finest cars from around the world. Unfortunately, these events also seem to be drawing in some opportunistic lowlifes looking to score to some high-dollar hardware the easy way. In this case, four classic Chevy cars were stolen over the weekend of August 17th.

According to Hemmings, an extremely rare ’61 Impala SS 409, a ’61 Impala resto-mod and a one-owner, unrestored ’57 Bel Air all went missing after failing to sell at various auctions. The article states that the Impala SS 409 – worth an estimated $220,000 – disappeared from the Russo and Steele auction, while the other two cars vanished from the Mecum auction. In addition to these thefts, Jalopnik is reporting that a customized 1962 Corvette was also stolen around the same time only instead of being stolen from an auction, this classic ‘Vette was snatched up as the owner was enjoying dinner. Hemmings points out that the cars were most likely targeted to be stripped for parts, but check out both reports and keep an eye out for these beautiful rides.

Auctions: Chevy Camaro GS Racecar Concept to be auctioned in Monterey

2010 Chevy Camaro GS Racecar Concept - front three-quarter view

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro GS Racecar Concept, built for the SEMA show back in 2008 by Riley Technologies with assistance from GM’s High Performance Vehicle Operations, will be offered for sale at the Mecum Auctions during Monterey Car Week next month.

The prototype motorsports Camaro was painted to resemble Mark Donohue’s 1969 Camaro Trans-Am racecar, and it had a few performance modifications done to make it eligible to compete in Grand Am’s Koni Challenge GS class. The production Camaro body-in-white was seam welded, the fenders, doors, hood and trunk were replaced with carbon-fiber pieces, a three-inch exhaust system with aftermarket mufflers was swapped in and engine, transmission and differential oil coolers were added. The stock Chevrolet LS3 V8 was dropped onto solid engine mounts and paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox, with upgraded brakes completing the package.

Mecum Auctions estimates this track-oriented prototype will bring in between $110,000 and $200,000 at the auction block.

Official: Bugatti to debut special Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Legend Jean-Pierre Wimille’ during Monterey Car Week

Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Bugatti, Misc. Auto Shows, Design/Style, Luxury

Bugatti has announced that it will offer the Legend, a special-edition run of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse that pays homage to six heroes of the carmaker’s long, storied past. Officially the world’s fastest car with its top down (try keeping your toupee on at 254 miles per hour), Bugatti will enhance the special Vitesses visually with design cues from the cars that its heroes drove.

The first Legend honors Jean-Pierre Wimille, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice for Bugatti and was one of the company’s longest-serving test drivers. He won in 1937, co-driving a 57G Tank with Robert Benoist, and in 1939, co-driving a 57C Tank with Pierre Veyron. Fittingly, the Veyron Legend dedicated to Wimille is blue, just like the 57G that he drove at Le Mans in 1937. In Bugatti’s own words, it “now shines in blue clear-coated carbon fiber and a light Wimille Bleu paintwork.” The 57G-based design language continues into the interior, with numerous details, such as materials and colors, that represent what Wimille would have experienced driving the Bugatti.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. It also should be noted that the Wimille edition Legend will be limited to a production run of three. As for the other five Legend editions? All we know is that they’ll be launched over the next 12 months. Look for the Wimille Legend on display next month in Monterey, Calif., at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

In the meantime, scroll down to check out the history-heavy Bugatti press release. No photos of the Veyron Legend were provided, so feel free to visit the gallery we included of the Grand Sport Vitesse’s record-setting open-top run.

The last time Ferrari’s exclusive Corse Clienti program made an appearance at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was back in 2008. At the time, the FXX was the only race car in the Corse Clienti stable, but the 599XX joined the party for the program’s return to Monterey this year.

A trio of FXXs and no less than seven 599XXs-almost a quarter of the total produced by Ferrari -took to the track last weekend, their high-revving 6.0L V12s echoing throughout the surrounding hills.

If you didn’t make it to Laguna Seca to see the Corse Clienti race cars in action, no worries. We’ve got a huge gallery of photos below as well as a video of the cars in action after the jump.

Preparations are already underway for Monterey car week this coming August, and that includes naming the featured marques for each event. Mazda Raceway is kicking things off by declaring Jaguar a the star manufacturer for the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Jaguar has a special history with Mazda Raceway and the vintage races, with Phil Hill winning the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races in 1950 behind the wheel of a Jaguar XK120. This will be the third time Jaguar has been selected, having previously been featured in 1976 and 1992.

The historic races will highlight the Jaguar C-Type, which will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of its 24 Hours of Le Mans victory in 1951 – the first of seven for Jaguar. The races will also feature the 50th anniversary of the elegant Jaguar E-Type. For more details visit mazdaraceway.com or read the official details in the press release after the jump.

Video: Trans-Am race cars battle it out at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion

1969 Ford Boss 302 Team Shelby Trans-Am Mustang – Click above to watch the video after the jump

One of our favorite events from the Monterey car week earlier this month was watching the field of 44 Trans-Am race cars tear it up at the Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The sights and sounds of classic Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers battling it out on the track just like they did in the late ’60s and early ’70s was something we’ll never forget.

The eventual winner of that race was a 1969 Boss 302 Mustang (which is now up for sale) owned and driven by Laguna Seca veteran Bruce Canepa, who has put up a video of his victory. The video shows that the win wasn’t easy, as he traded places with a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A and a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 multiple times. You can watch the entire race in the embedded video after the jump, and be sure to turn up your speakers.

We witnessed several million-dollar cars go up for sale at RM’s auction on Saturday night, but across town, the Gooding & Company auction had even more impressive metal crossing the block. Gooding’s two night auction resulted in more than $64 million in sales, including six world records. “We went into this year’s Pebble Beach Auctions with high expectations because of the sheer number of extraordinary cars we had consigned,” said David Gooding, President and founder of Gooding & Company. “Our highest-ever Pebble Beach weekend results at $64.59 Million speak for themselves and I couldn’t be happier.”

The record-setting cars auctioned off by Gooding:

  • 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione at $7,260,000
  • 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza at $6,710,000

  • 1951 Ferrari 340 America Spider at $2,530,000

Another Pebble Beach Concours has come and gone, the confetti has flown and the champagne has been imbibed. The somewhat surprising Best of Show selection has been entered into the record books, and now, we, your faithful Autobloggers, can finally get some rest. It’s been a grueling week full of new car unveilings, vintage car races, auctions and, of course, the Concours. As much as we enjoy every minute of it, and are sad to see it end, we’re always glad to be home again, sleeping in our own beds. But before we crawl back into our caves to slumber for another year, we have some unfinished business to take care of.

There are always thousands of images that don’t make it into the official posts, most of which are just as beautiful, and just as interesting. As you probably surmised if you’ve seen our coverage so far, this year’s Concours was truly spectacular – from the Dawn Patrol entrance of the twelve Jaguar XK-SS roadsters to the crowning of the champ, we’ve shown you the tributes to Indy, Alfa, and Jaguar, to the Ferrari SWB and Ghia… and now it’s time to show you all of the rest of the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. We’ve assembled a gallery of high-res images for you to peruse that covers what we didn’t cover to date. Call it a parting nod to you our readers and to all those who make this such a great event. Monterey 2010: Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion paddock walk

2010 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

We can’t exactly say that we’ve always liked the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion – mainly because this is the first year that the event, formerly informally known as the Monterey Historics, is using that title. No matter what they call it, though, we have to say that we’re glad some things never change. By that we are referring to the fact that the paddock is open to everyone and that the cars you see are some of the most amazing vehicles you’ve ever laid eyes on. Even the non-race cars that serve as basic transportation for the drivers while in town can be achingly captivating.

We just couldn’t resist walking around for a couple of hours and banging off a few hundred photos. There are race cars returning to their stalls, some heading out to the track, others just parked and still others undergoing open-heart surgery. There are display vehicles and street cars, along with a few celebrities on hand to participate or just admire them. We’ve put together a gallery of a few dozen of our favorites below.

Monterey 2010: Jaguar’s 75th birthday party at Pebble Beach

Jaguar 75th Anniversary at Pebble Beach

We’ve already shown you that Jaguar was honored at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with a dozen XK-SS roadsters showing up for the party, but there were other Jaguars on hand as well – lots and lots of remarkable Jags.

The history of Jaguar actually began almost 90 years ago when two young men hell-bent on motorcycle glory set up a small company to produce sidecars under the Swallow name in 1922. The younger of the two was William Lyons, who later became Sir William Lyons, mainly because Jaguar went on to bring Britain so much motoring glory. The sidecar business eventually turned into an automobile coachworks, with custom bodies on a bespoke Standard brand chassis that became know as the S.S.I. and S.S.II.

For the follow-up to those early S.S. models – Standard Swallow some think – Lyons had commissioned a new overhead-valve six-cylinder engine that was about 50 percent more powerful than the old side-valve engines they had been using. They put the new engine in a new chassis, enclosed it in the company’s first four-door sedan body and Lyons personally chose what he thought was the most appropriate name from a list of choices given to him by his advertising people – Jaguar. On September 23, 1935, the company unveiled the SS Jaguar to London’s assembled press. That car led to the short-wheelbase SS Jaguar 100 sports car that helped establish Jaguar’s reputation for performance with its early racing success.

After World War II, the company decided to change its name to simply ‘Jaguar,’ dropping the newly infamous “S.S.” label. The automaker also started focusing less on inexpensive sportscars for the homeland market, and more on luxurious models aimed at capturing rich American buyers. One way to do that was with new product and Lyons and his crew were cooking up a duesie – a new sportscar featuring a double overhead cam engine just like the race cars of the era. The goal was 160 horsepower from the engine’s 3.4-liter capacity and a 120 mph top speed. That car was the iconic XK120 – “XK” for the engine and “120” for the car’s top speed. That begat the XK140 and 150 and a whole slew of other legendary vehicles that bore the Jaguar name.

Some of the finest examples of Jaguar’s pedigree were on hand at Pebble Beach on Sunday. Take a look in our high-res gallery below.
