Nissan UK Juke commercial – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Nissan Juke, a space oddity that continues to win hearts and minds, has a commercial in the UK that continues the crossover’s ownership of left field. The two-minute spot with a music track straight from a Halo ad injects some energy to the Juke mix, suggesting that it might have enough spark to get the city going and make your hair stand on end. Or at least enough to start up Richard Simmons. Follow the jump to watch.

Report: Nissan abandons thoughts of 240SX revival, ponders Sentra coupe instead

As much as we’d love to see Nissan hearken back to its performance roots with a remake of the classic 240SX coupe, it seems the Japanese automaker is content to earn sales by sticking to the tried-and-true approach of offering competent vehicles at attainable prices. In other words, if Nissan has a sporty-looking coupe in the pipeline, it’ll be more of a Scion tC competitor than a Hyundai Genesis Coupe-challenger.

This revelation comes by way of Larry Dominique, chief product planner for Nissan North America, who tells Wards “he would be more inclined to do a derivative of the Sentra than introduce an entirely new nameplate.” Nissan’s internal data suggests that it could only sell about 30,000 240SX coupes in America per year, which isn’t enough to make a convincing production argument. Sad, sure, but very likely also true.

In related news, Dominique also says that the next generation of Nissan cars in the States will share a great deal of design DNA. At present, there is very little visually that ties the Versa, Sentra and Altima together in any meaningful cohesive way besides the Nissan badge on the trunk. Expect that to change in the coming years as the nameplates receive their next rounds of styling updates.

Report: Hyundai Sonata overtakes Nissan Altima for third in mid-size segment

Filed under: Car Buying, Sedan, Hyundai

2011 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai is movin’ on up. According to The Detroit News, the Sonata officially displaced the Nissan Altima as the third best-selling mid-size sedan in America last month. In August, the Korean manufacturer sold 21,399 units, falling just behind the Honda Accord at 22,506 and the Toyota Camry at a little over 30,000. Those numbers are just based on retail sales, not the vehicles that are sold off to rental fleets. The Sonata has been besting rivals like the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu for a good while now, but this is the first time the car has managed to rattle the Japanese triumvirate that dominates the segment.

It seemed to be only a matter of time, though. The Sonata now wears some of the best looking sheet metal of any midsizer out there and its price tag comes in a good bit lower than both the Accord and the Camry. Throw in a snappy interior and very efficient drivetrain options, and suddenly you’ve got the attention of the car-buying public. The Detroit News says that since the 2011 Sonata debuted, the number of car buyers considering the vehicle has leapfrogged from 6.2 percent in January of 2007 to 19.5 percent recently. Thanks for the tip, Nicolai!

Nissan joins overheating Garmin sat-nav recall

Nissan is recalling a number of models due to overheating Garmin navigation units. Cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with Nuvi 750, 760 and 765 GPS devices are at risk for a vehicle fire due to overheating batteries in the devices. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects Nissan’s Altima, Frontier, Pathfinder, Rogue, Sentra, Versa and Xterra models sold with the Garmin devices between 2008 and 2010. NHTSA does not say exactly how many vehicles will be effected by the defective batteries.

Garmin technicians will make the necessary repairs to the GPS units by replacing the battery with a new, less-toasty unit and adding an additional spacer between the battery and the rest of the device. The repair won’t cost owners anything other than a little time and a trip to the local dealership. Nissan will notify owners directly about the recall, which is scheduled to begin sometime during this month. Suzuki is facing a similar recall, as well – these Garmin navigation units are fitted in the SX4, Grand Vitara and Equator.

Topped out, the SUV will set you back $42,600 for the four-wheel drive V8 LE.

Meanwhile, the base, two-wheel drive Xterra X commands an MSRP of $23,850, which is about $1,100 more than the outgoing model. Option up to the range-topping four-wheel drive PRO-4X with an automatic gearbox, and you can expect to hand over $30,100 of your hard-earned cash.

Nissan-Dongfeng creating new brand for China?

Nissan LogoIt looks like the Chinese car market is going to get a little more crowded. According to a report from Just-Auto, Nissan and its partner company, Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company, will be forming a new brand just for the people’s republic. Called Venucia, the company aims to have its first products on the road by 2012. With such a short development time, we expect its stable to be made up primarily of Dongfeng products with new fascias and Nissan powerplants, but you never know. Just-Auto says that Nissan and Dongfeng have devoted an entire team to the project, including research, design and manufacturing.

Interestingly enough, Venucia won’t completely replace Nissan in China. Instead, the two companies will sell vehicles right alongside one another. Nissan has said that it will provide engines for the project, and that the brand is aimed toward filling the need for inexpensive, quality transportation in the Chinese market.

Dongfeng said that the Venucia project is part of its plan to sell one million vehicles annually. Last year, it sold 519,000 units.

Nissan Townpod EV concept

As the Paris Motor Show draws closer, automakers are sending out the usual raft of teaser shots. The pictures never reveal much but they definitely get people talking. The image you see above? It’s a glimpse at the zero-emissions, electric concept vehicle called the Nissan Townpod EV.

Nissan has this to say about the Townpod:

It is designed to offer zero-emissions mobility to a future generation of home-based, innovative entrepreneurs who are creative and tech-savvy. It is more than just a car and it’s more than just a van – it heralds a new-era of flexible, stylish vehicles that will bring electric-vehicle mobility to the masses.

So, is it an electric city-car for the techie on the go? Will the Townpod EV be a mobile blogging lair for those both green and lazy? Honestly, we have no clue. It’s not easy to figure out what something looks like from an image that resembles the eye of an Autobot. For now, we’ll just have to let our imaginations run wild.

We do love staring at concept vehicles until our contact lenses dry out, and the Nissan Townpod EV is sure to be no exception. Stay tuned for updates from the Paris Motor Show, and hit the jump to read Nissan’s official press release.

Video: Nissan and this polar bear want to love you, if you drive a Leaf

Nissan Leaf commercial

Nissan Leaf “Polar Bear” spot – Click above to watch video after the jump

As subtle as a box of hammers to the face, global warming’s most iconic animal has taken a starring role in the latest advertisement for the Nissan Leaf. Called, simply, “Polar Bear,” the one-minute spot follows a polar bear on a trek from watching glaciers calve into the sea down south through a city and into a residential neighborhood to find a man about to start his commute. Then, well, you’ll see. Check it out after the jump.

For comparison, we’ve also pasted Nissan’s ad from June about the “New Car,” which highlights the changes the Leaf will bring to the industry, below. This ad shows off the ways the Leaf is different from other cars, including the tidbit that it will be made of at least 30 percent post-consumer material. While “New Car” is all about smartphones and batteries and other tech, the polar bear ad is all emotion. Still, the new spot does miss a chance to show the driver unplugging the Leaf before getting in, which would help get a little bit of that “new car” messaging across. Watch both here.

Rumormill: Nissan GT-R ‘Egotist’ coming soon?

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Japan, Nissan, Rumormill

2010 Nissan GT-R – Click above for high-res image gallery

Don’t call it the Spec M. According to Autocar, the suits at Nissan have decided to sail a new luxury version of the mighty GT-R under the Egoist banner. The car will supposedly wear a completely new front fascia, and will debut alongside the facelifted version of the GT-R later this year. Other changes include a pair of special Recaro thrones, massive front brakes and unique 10-spoke wheels. All of that kit will set you back a lofty $166,740 at current conversion rates, but so far, it’s unclear whether the Egoist will make its way to the States or whether it will be a JDM-only (and possibly Euro-only) piece.

Autocar is also serving up a few details on the plain Jane 2011 GT-R. If the report has hit its mark, we can look forward to a significant weight reduction along with a few mechanical tweaks that should up the horsepower. A new oil cooler, exhaust system and slightly larger turbos should help the car churn out a grand total of 506 horsepower and 448 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers are awfully specific without any official word from Nissan, but right now, this estimate is as good as anyone’s.

Six Wheeler

Sheik, hydro and roll – Click above to watch video after the jump

Well, this is certainly different. We’ve seen our fair share of wild vehicle modifications over the years, but this one takes the cake as one of the most imaginative. If the YouTube description is any sort of indication, this craft was hewn just for Sheik Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan as his personal toy. Near as we can tell, the guy liked the side-mount spare tire carriers on classic vehicles from the ’30s, but wanted to be able to deploy them without having to actually get out and spin a lug nut. The solution was found in the miracle (or curse) of hydraulics.

Let’s just do the world a favor and make sure this doesn’t evolve into a trend. We’ve already had terrible visions of a future SEMA show with row upon row of six-wheeled, white-wall wearing Honda Civics. If you’re brave enough, you can hit the jump to see the Nissan-based for yourself. Just don’t show anyone else.
