Study: Lack of new midsize pickup models driving strong resale values for older models

2012 Nissan Frontier

According to a new study by Black Book, the fact that there are fewer mid-sized pickup truck options on the market is driving up the retail cost of used models. During the month of June, used vehicles from model years 2007-2011 depreciated an average of 1.3 percent across the board, but midsize pickups of the same year saw their value decrease by just 0.7 percent on average. Look across the past year, and the market as a whole saw those cars depreciate by 13.7 percent while midsize pickups saw their value decline by a mere 5.1 percent.

Ricky Beggs, senior vice president and Managing Editor with Black Book, says midsize pickups are holding their value better than other products on the market due to the fact that there are so few brand-new options available. Currently, only Chevrolet, Nissan and Toyota offer midsize pickup trucks. Honda has a player in the game in the form of the Ridgeline, which is a sort of cross between a traditional pickup and a crossover, and the discontinued Ford Ranger falls into a smaller size class that no longer exists in the US.

What’s all this mean to you? If you happen to have a set of keys to midsize pickup in your pocket, you’ve made a good investment. Don’t expect to see the machine depreciate as quickly as other vehicles on the road. Conversely, if you’re in the market, expect to pay a bit more than you might have expected for a non-fullsize pickup truck. Scroll down for the press release from Black Book.

Videos: Rewind – Old Top Gear looks back at even older Top Gear

Historic Top Gear – Click above to watch the videos after after the jump

Top Gear as we know it now is in its 16th season of automotive mischief, hoonage and – somewhere in there – journalism. What we tune in for now, though, is a reborn version of a show that soldiered on from 1977 to 2001 before being cancelled and once again exhumed.

The original show only resembles the current version in two ways: the theme song is Dickey Betts’ Jessica and Jeremy Clarkson is one of the hosts. Beyond that, it’s a whole different animal. Looking at these videos, it’s a wonderful thing that TG rose from the ashes of its former self into the show it is today. Looking at clips of the original series, it’s a wonder it lasted as long as it did.

For the most part, there a batch of dour presenters with bad hair and worse suits giving us the goods on the latest version of cars like the Lancia Beta or Rover 216. In some places, the future lunacy of the show pokes through, but for the most part it’s a very tame, and, yes, boring show.

Still, the clips of historic TG are entertaining, if for no other reason than Clarkson’s hair and denim jacket collection. Here’s hoping that Top Gear USA will itself enjoy enough time to metamorphosize into something bolder, funnier and harder-hitting as well. Thanks for the tip, Ryan!

Report: NHTSA opens safety probes into older Honda CR-V, Kia Optima models

Filed under: Sedan, SUV, Recalls, Safety, Honda, Kia

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is looking into issues with 2006 Honda CR-V models and 2007 Kia Optimas. According to The Detroit News, both vehicles have garnered a fairly small number of complaints – just three each – for separate problems. In the case of the CR-V models, owners have experienced electrical failures that led to fires in the driver’s side door. Owners claim that the master window switch overheated, causing the damage. NHTSA is looking into around 150,000 of the Honda models.

Meanwhile, the agency is investigating 41,000 Kia Optimas for faulty transmission shift cables. Owners have reported problems with the cables becoming detached from the transmission, effectively locking the vehicle into or out of gear. In one case, a vehicle rolled away after being shut off. The Detroit News reports that Kia has issued a service bulletin concerning improperly-installed shift cables that may detach over time.

Older Jeep Grand Cherokees being investigated for fuel tank defects

Filed under: SUV, Government/Legal, Safety, Jeep

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees over concerns that their rear-mounted gas tank may be prone to rupture in the event of an accident. The agency has recorded 44 instances where a ruptured fuel tank may have contributed to a total of 55 deaths resulting from fire.

The Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group founded by Ralph Nader, requested the NHTSA investigation. In response to the Washington-based group’s petition, NHTSA issued the following in a statement: “The existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect. Further review and investigation into these incidents is needed.” And so an investigation we shall have.

A preliminary report from NHTSA suggested that there wasn’t any evidence that the 1993-2004 Grand Cherokee’s fuel tanks were “over-represented for post-crash fires.” If this investigation leads to a recall, Chrysler has indicated that it will cooperate with the agency.
