Report: Glickenhaus’ FIA championship-winning P4/5 Competizione comes home [w/video]

Jim Glickenhaus' Ferrari P4/5 Competizione comes home.

The sexy Ferrari P4/5 Competizione, a cross between the lightweight F430 Scuderia and the race-only F430 GT2 with special Pininfarina bodywork, spent some time in Europe notching a few race victories. But it finally has made its way back to the US and into owner Jim Glickenhaus’ collection, where it met its sister car and inspiration, the original P4/5.

During its short-but-sweet two-year racing campaign, it competed in just two races but left a big impact. We’d call any lap of the Nürburgring that’s under seven minutes a victory, but, with the help of a hybrid drivetrain, the P4/5C qualified for the 2012 Nürburgring 24 Hours with a lap of 6:51. That’s faster than any Ferrari-powered vehicle has ever gone around the ‘Ring. The car then went on to win the EXP-1 class (for experimental vehicles), for a World Championship, and finished the race 12th overall in a field of 170 cars. Not bad at all.

For those who haven’t kept up on the P4/5C, the hybrid powertrain was introduced to the one-off racecar for 2012 after it had attempted the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2011 with negligible results. A Ferrari 4.0-liter V8 was joined by a Formula One-style Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), good for a combined 563 horsepower.

P4/5 Competizione gets 800 tires for 24-hours Nürburgring, street edition possible

He hints they may create a very limited-edition street-going run of the sexy beast.

An awful lot of cars have made themselves famous while using just four tires. Formula 1 teams’ tire total per race is around 140 – i.e. 35 sets of Pirellis.

With Jim Glickenhaus’ featherweight Ferrari F430 GT2-based 470-horsepower P4/5 Competizione about to tackle the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring at the end of June in the new EXP1 class, the car’s tire sponsor Pirelli is bringing, according to Glickenhaus, 800 tires along, using the occasion to test like mad whether it be daytime heat sets, night sets, wet sets, semi-slick sets, you name it.

As the P4/5 Competizione has proven itself durable so far, looks like it may last the whole 24 hours, being hampered perhaps only by the plethora of pit stops it’ll be constrained to effect while Pirelli tests the various quartets of rubber.

James Glickenhaus’s P4/5 Competizione made its debut at the Nürburgring this weekend ahead of the actual running of the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The test sessions reportedly went well and got as much hype and attention (yep, we’re guilty as charged…) as anything Glickenhaus’s now-famous racer does.

The P4/5 Competizione looked right at home on the track, though tests were cut short after a red flag limited driver Luca Cappellari to one lap. Mika Salo got plenty of seat time though, and the car looks just about ready for competition.

There aren’t any concrete lap times yet, but best guesses are in the 8:30 range, which would put the P4/5 Competizione right where it needs to be. Click past the jump for videos from the test weekend, and be sure to check out the latest set of images of the exquisitely beautiful showpiece below.

Way back in October, we showed you the first installment of Inside P4/5 Competizione, a documentary about James Glickenhaus’ now-iconic racecar. The second installment of this ongoing story is now on YouTube, following the saga of the car’s build and the hype that has surrounded it from the beginning. Throughout the documentary, Glickenhaus insists that media attention was never the goal or expectation, but that he just wanted to go racing.

The video covers everything from the the obsessive web coverage of the car to Ferrari’s attempts to make the project stop. The footage is splattered with images of the P4/5 Competizione both on the track and in various stages of undress, which is always a good thing. Couple that with a fantastic soundtrack and Glickenhaus’s indomitable attitude, and you have the recipe for a winner. See for yourself in the video after the break.

We’ve seen video of James Glickenhaus’ “daily driver” Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina on the track and the street, and we already know that his race-prepared P4/5 Competizione is progressing nicely. While photos show the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione to be just as sexy as the Enzo-based road car that inspired it, nothing shows off a racing car’s chops like actual footage of it in action.

That’s now available via just-released in-car video of the Ferrari P4/5 Competizione lapping Italy’s Vallelunga circuit. It’s the latest exidence that Jim Glickenhaus’ new machine is indeed the business. Sounds as good as it looks, too. Follow the jump to watch. Thanks to Don for the tip!

Another day, another video of the Jim Glickenhaus’ Ferrari P4/5 Competizione in action… not that we’re complaining. This time Mr. Glickenhaus takes his one-off racer to Franciacorta for some track time. The fog may be thick, but that didn’t stop Glickenhaus from making glorious noises with his Pininfarina-designed track toy.

Jim Glickenhaus and his team have given their stunning Ferrari P4/5 Competizione its first taste of track time with a short sprint around a closed course. According to Glickenhaus, the run went better than expected with the one-off Ferrari interpretation staying light on its feet and easy to fling. Despite testing on a relatively short track, the driver was able to ratchet the car up to third gear before having to call it quits.

As you may recall, the Ferrari P4/5 Competitizione is hewn from carbon fiber and borrows pieces from the similarly sinister Ferrari F430. The last time we saw the car, Glickenhaus and his team were putting the finishing touches on the vehicle for its first shake down.

The Glickenhaus Ferrari P4/5 Competizione is set to wage war against the rest of the fighters at this year’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring. That means that this beast will square off against the likes of the Porsche 918 RSR and a host of other high-power creations. We can’t wait.

It’s no secret that we wish James Glickenhaus would adopt us (Hell, your author would barely have to change his last name) and we’ve always been quite smitten with his one-off Ferrari P4/5. The Pininfarina-bodied car has been seen everywhere from New York City to a Gooding’s auction at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Palm Beach, Florida and even the Paris Motor Show. Now we have footage of it doing more than just looking good as Glickenhaus took the car across The Pond for some high-speed testing.

After calling it a day at the track, the P4/5 doesn’t get put on a trailer, it’s used to shuffle off into the city to enjoy the local night life. We’re pretty sure that Mr. Glickenhaus gets the velvet-rope treatment when he heads out, but it’s nice to see that the P4/5 does too.

More Glickenhaus P4/5 Competizione carbon fiber awesomeness

James Glickenhaus is up to some very naughty things with his Ferrari P4/5 Competizione. Forged from the embers of a re-bodied F430 and a desire to wade into the deep end of the 24 Hours Nürburgring, the P4/5 Competizione is insanity writ large. Glickenhaus has been so kind as to share a few visions of his creation with the rest of the world via the wonder of Facebook, and from what we can tell, carbon fiber has never looked so good.

Judging from the photos, Glickenhaus and his team have completed work on the carbon fiber shell – giving the P4/5 Competizione both the low weight and strength needed to do the deed around the Green Hell for 24 straight hours. They’ve also begun snugging in the mechanical bits, and it looks like the roll cage is tucked into place as well. From what we can see, the vehicle will retain many of the sexy lines that Pininfarina first debuted on the showcar, though with the hardware necessary for going fender to fender with some of the world’s greatest racers. The story of James Glickenhaus’ P4/5 Competizione continues with Chapter 1 of the story put together by Kinetic Fin. The car has long been in gestation, and although we have no idea how many chapters will be involved in this tale, it looks like we’ll be seeing the completed racer soon.

So while you won’t get a glimpse of the finished product in the video, Glickenhaus will explain his motivation and he’ll do it among some of the other eye-pleasing cars in his collection. Follow the jump for the prologue, and let the road to the 2011 Nürburgring 24 begin.
