Emergency Services Attend Major Road Accident In Kent

A crash in the county of Kent in southeast England involving 130 vehicles on a bridge has injured 200 people, 27 of which required hospitalization. The incident, which occurred at 7:15 AM BST (2:15 AM on America’s east coast), was on a bridge on the A249, a road that connects two major motorways, the M2 and M20.

Poor visibility due to heavy fog is believed to be one of the primary causes of the pileup, with some witnesses reporting they could only see about 30 feet in front of them before the crash. There were reports from some drivers that the collisions went on for ten minutes, as other vehicles caught up to the scene of the accident and were unable to stop in time.

Chief Inspector Andy Reeves told the BBC, “It was…very hazardous. It was described to me as a very thick fog and it was certainly low visibility at the time.” Cars, vans, semis and even a loaded car carrier were involved in the wreck, which will likely keep the bridge closed for the remainder of the day. Scroll down for helicopter footage of the aftermath.

Le Mans Series pace car mistake causes pileup [w/video]

2011 Le Castellet 6-Hour crash

2011 Le Castellet 6-Hours crash – Click above to view video after the jump

The inaugural race of the 2011 Le Mans Series, Le Castellet 6-Hours, got off to a nasty beginning today, with a mistake by the pit car causing a huge pileup in the GT field. Thanks to a hump in the back stretch of the Paul Ricard HTTT circuit, cars at the back of the pack can’t see the front of the field, just the green light telling them to go.

At the start of Le Castellet, the lights turned green, but the pace car didn’t leave the track. Fortunately for the Audi pace car driver, the prototype field saw his mistake and slowed down abruptly.

Those in GT, thinking the race was still green, crested the rise to be met with much slower traffic. The resulting panic stops led to pandemonium, which left at least one Farnbacher-Loles Porsche out of commission before the race even got started. Check out the video after the jump.

Video: European cars on ice in snowy slow-motion plow pileup

European skating rink – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Cars keep getting more advanced all the time. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, stability management… all in an effort to combat the laws of physics in adverse situations. But there are some conditions where no matter what you have at your disposal – winter tires, all-wheel drive, even a snow plow – there’s just no traction to be had. And then it gets ugly.

With record snow storms sweeping across Europe over the past couple of weeks, one camera-toting bystander, helpless to stop the icy car-carnage unfolding before him, filmed it for posterity, and set it to some comically serene music while he was at it. The footage after the jump is perfectly safe for the workplace, but the obscenities you’ll likely to spurt out in disbelief while watching it might not be. Thanks to everyone for the tips.

Video: Worst go-kart pileup ever?

When go-karts attack – Click above to watch the video

Ever see those Tour de France crashes that start with one guy in Spandex shorts face-planting into the cement and ends up with 30 or 40 cyclists cascading like dominoes? It’s a horrific site to be sure; one that gets replayed dozens of times on sportscasts the world over. These chain-reaction crashes happen in motorsports, but the pileups aren’t usually as robust. Or are they?

Beyond the jump is video of one go-karter who sideswipes a barrier, which sets off a wet track karting collision extraordinaire. The video is only 17 seconds long, but we guarantee that this Monaco affair contains all the carnage action you’ll need to see to feel better about your day. And while the go-karts look like they’re moving pretty darn fast, it doesn’t appear as though anyone was hurt. Hit the jump to watch 52-kart pickup.
