Video: Nissan Patrol attempts Guinness record with 170-ton cargo plane tow

Nissan Patrol SUV pulls 170-ton cargo plane for Guinness world record.

Yesterday, Nissan teased us with a video showing a Patrol pulling up to a 170-ton cargo plane at an airport in the Middle East – we could only assume that the not-for-America sports utility vehicle would attempt to tow the jet.

Well, somebody leaked the official Nissan video, which indeed shows the Patrol successfully pulling the plane 30 meters for what reportedly is a Guinness world record. While Guinness hasn’t confirmed the record on its website at time of writing, the 170-ton jet would be the heaviest plane ever towed by a production automobile. The video was taken down quickly, but another video shot by an observer at the event was posted for our enjoyment. We figured Nissan would move to repost the official video sooner rather than later, and it did.

The Patrol seems to have no problem towing 340,000 pounds, but let’s just say it wasn’t a quick ordeal. Check out the official and unofficial video of the tow below, as well as Nissan’s teaser video. In a reversal of fortunes, we also threw in another, somewhat smaller but perhaps just as impressive vid, just for fun.

Note, this isn’t the first time a passenger vehicle has towed a massive air-bound machine behind it. See here and here, and for another record-breaking tow record, click here.

CARS 2 cast adds a plane, a Reliant Robin and a Zundapp Janus

The cast of characters for CARS 2, opening in theaters on June 24, continues to grow this week with three new additions… three very unlikely, odd and interesting additions.

The first isn’t a car at all, but a plane named Siddeley, voiced by Jason Issacs. Described as a state-of-the-art supersonic British twin-engine spy jet by the folks at Pixar, Siddeley is a partner to Finn McMissile.

Next up is a Zündapp Janus named Professor Z, voiced by Thomas Kretschmann. Professor Z is an internationally wanted weapons designer who plans to sabotage the World Grand Prix.

And finally, we have Tomber, voiced by Michael Michelis, whose name means “to fall” in French. A fitting moniker if ever there were one because Tomber is a Reliant Robin, the British three-wheeler that the boys on Top Gear UK like to play with so much.

Check out the official character descriptions from Pixar and a turntable video of Professor Z after the jump, and click here to read about all of the new characters in CARS 2.

Report: Jack Roush loses sight in left eye after plane crash, still aims to fly

They say that statistically speaking, flying is safer than driving. Jack Roush might beg to differ with that assessment. After his second life-threatening plane crash in eight years, the NASCAR bigwig was back at the Michigan International Speedway this past weekend to watch his team in action.

Roush’s recovery from his injuries during the crash in Oshkosh, WI will be almost complete with one notable exception: Roush has lost the vision in his left eye. For now, Roush also has a back brace to support a fractured spine and piece of hardware in his cheek.

Despite the loss of vision on one eye, The Detroit News indicates that Roush has excellent sight in the right eye and fully intends to fly again once his physical recovery is complete. While there are tougher vision restrictions on commercial pilots, private aviators are evidently allowed to fly with only one eye.

Interestingly, based on a quote in the DetNews article, it sounds like Roush might be blaming the airport’s air traffic controller for the plane crash:

“I filed my NTSB report today, which is a matter of public record. It speaks for itself. The reality of it, on a trip arrival into Oshkosh, Wis., I was put in conflict with the flight plan of another airplane close to the ground, and I was unable to address the conflict and keep the airplane flying. I ground-looped the airplane. The airplane did a great job staying intact.”

No doubt we’ll hear more about this as the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the incident further, but for now, Roush says he just feels extraordinarily lucky.
