Video: Volvo Trucks’ president Claes Nilsson delivers the right hook

Claes Nilsson, Volvo Trucks CEO

We’d like to think that most executives stand behind their products, especially cars and trucks where people’s lives are on the line. But Claes Nilsson has taken the principle one step further.

In this brief video clip, the president of Volvo Trucks doesn’t just stand idly by and watch the new Volvo FMX being put to the test. He stands on top of it as it is suspended from a crane at the port of Gothenburg, Sweden. It’s a sight to see, and aptly illustrates the point that Volvo trucks are built to withstand more than their design brief. See the one-take stunt for yourself in the video below, and be sure to watch the new “making of” video as well.

Autoblog talks to Saab NA President and COO Tim Colbeck after his first day

Tim Colbeck, Saab

“I’m a horrible manager,” admits Muller, “but I’m very good at raising money.”

While in Washington D.C. for the 2012 Saab 9-4X launch, we had dinner next to Victor Muller, then spoke to the newly announced captain of Saab’s North American ship, Tim Colbeck, who actually fills the dual roles of president and COO – at the end of his first day on the job. Muller started the evening by talking about the most recent troubles, saying of the production stoppage, “It was all my fault.”

“Saab was really a General Motors subsidiary – GM financing, GM terms and conditions, GM suppliers, and things can start to come apart when you’re independent. Sometimes you have to tell suppliers it’s not going to be the way it was.”

Muller says a single supplier told Saab that “if we didn’t pay, he wasn’t going to open his truck that day,” and Muller “called his bluff.” The supplier was a man of his word, wouldn’t deliver the parts, and the lack of those particular components caused a production stoppage of two hours, which Muller says is “normal elsewhere, but not in Sweden.”

To hear Muller tell it, it might not have been such a problem if the Swedish media, which he accuses of being Saab bashers, hadn’t turned it into a sensational story. “Within two hours of the stoppage,” he said, “we didn’t have one supplier with problems, we had 92 suppliers with problems” as Saab experienced a “run on the bank.” Continue reading…

Report: FIA president Jean Todt interested in new electric F1 series

jean todt

Are you prepared for Formula One, Electric Boogaloo? Jean Todt, President of the FIA, apparently is, and he hopes to introduce a few new racing series that will provide a platform for an electrified Formula One racing series.

Before we get to see a fully-fledged electric F1 league, The Telegraph reports that Todt plans to roll out electric car, go-kart and single-seat events. The goal is to increase awareness of electric propulsion and drum up support for its use in a variety of motorsports applications.

Jean Todt may have a tough road ahead of him, though, thanks to assumed opposition from F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Todt is looking to bring hybrid powerplants to F1 and Ecclestone has already voiced his opposition to that plan. We’re going to guess that Bernie won’t take too kindly to all-electric racing either.

Mitsubishi NA gets new president and CEO

Yoichi YokozawaMitsubishi has announced that the automaker’s North American operations will now be helmed by Yoichi Yokozawa. The former vice president will replace Shinichi Kurihara as CEO on April 1 of this year. Kurihara is said to be returning to the Mitsubishi mothership at that time, though it’s unclear exactly what his duties will be once he returns to Japan.

Yokozawa got his start with Mitsubishi 13 years ago when he came on board the company’s European headquarters to help oversee the automaker’s financial planning on the old continent. Since 2006, the executive has been responsible for guiding Mitsubishi through NAFTA interests as the corporate general manager in the Mitsubishi overseas business management office.

The automaker says that Yokozawa has worked with the company on multiple levels on everything from corporate strategy to financial, merger, alliance and business projects. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Report: NADA president urges Fed to reconsider fuel rules

Ed Tonkin, NADAThe National Automobile Dealers Association has joined the ranks of those opposed to upping Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to 60 mpg by 2025. The dealer group says that with fuel prices still low, consumers are more interested in horsepower and style than they are super-efficient vehicles. That means that if the federal government starts mandating ever more efficient vehicles that are significantly costlier to manufacture, dealers are likely to see sales falter as automakers have to elevate MSRPs to keep from losing their shirts. That’s the fear of NADA chairman Ed Tonkin and his constituents. Tonkin should know – he himself owns a mutli-brand dealership in Portland.

Of course, Tonkin’s argument hinges against further upping CAFE numbers hinges upon fuel prices staying at their current levels — something that even the most optimistic minds are hesitant to believe. The federal government is expected to unveil its plan for increasing fuel economy standards early next year. So far, word has it that the Obama Administration is looking to impose an average of 35 mpg by 2016 and as much as 60 mpg by 2025.

Report: Toyota president assuages fears that he’s closing all Japanese factories

Filed under: Japan, Plants/Manufacturing, Toyota, Earnings/Financials

Toyota President Akio Toyoda caused something of an uproar in the automaker’s home market of Japan when he suggested that “logically, it doesn’t make sense to manufacture in Japan.” Why? The surging value of the Yen, currently at a 15-year high, compared to the U.S. Dollar.

Considering that the vast majority of vehicles Toyota builds in Japan are intended for export and that the American market is still the automaker’s most important, the value of the Yen is a major stumbling block standing in the way of profits. Still, Toyoda has confirmed that his eponymous company has no intention of entirely halting production in Japan.

What that assurance doesn’t mean, however, is that Toyota won’t continue to shift production overseas in an effort to retain profitability. While none of the Japanese plants will be completely closed, they may see a good portion of their output transferred to facilities in other markets… notably North America.
