Exclusive: LA Auto Show growing to three press days?

The 2013 Los Angeles International Auto Show is already shaping up to be a big deal, with at least nine world debuts from some of the biggest names in the industry. Now, Autoblog has intercepted a memo that’s going to be sent out to automakers this week explaining that LA will be even bigger this year because it is adding a third day of media festivities.

Called the Connected Car Expo, the additional day will focus on the industry’s burgeoning “connected car space.” Currently, Verizon, Sprint, OnStar and Qualcomm represent the big-name exhibitors, although we expect that list to add more than a few mainstream automakers.

The Connected Car Expo is scheduled for November 19, and will be the first official press day of the 2013 LA show. It should be noted that while the CCE will be held in the LA Convention Center, it’ll be limited to one hall and that the media – that’d be us – won’t have access to the main show floor that day. A whole day dedicated to the future of automobile technology sounds like a great idea to us, though, and we’re anxious to check it out firsthand.

Report: Acura press kit causes bomb threat near Automobile magazine offices

Acura Emblem

Thanks to one very suspicious-looking press kit from Acura, the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan had a bit of a bomb scare on its hands this afternoon. The Japanese automaker sent a special-edition package to our friends at Automobile magazine in conjunction with the release of Thor. That kit happened to find its way into a recycling bin outside of the publication’s Michigan office. A stand-up citizen reported what they thought was a bomb, which resulted in the evacuation of parts of down town.

A helicopter was reportedly called in to provide an eye in the sky for a few hours as well.

We can’t blame the authorities for taking action. The Automobile offices are situated directly across the street from a Federal building, and with the ne’er-do-wells of the world plotting revenge for the termination of the nefarious Osama bin Laden, a little caution is more than warranted.

As of the time of writing, everything had returned to normal around the Automobile enclave. For a look at the kit itself, head over to The Car Connection.

Elvis Uwe Gemballa hasn’t re-entered the building, but his company will apparently soon come return. The last we heard of Mr. Gemballa, he was still listed as “disappeared” in South Africa, with his mother set up as the sole stockholder in a new shadow corporation and his wife in charge of filing bankruptcy for the former concern.

On Monday, August 23 the man in charge of the remains of the Gemballa operation, managing director Andreas Schwarz, will reportedly hold a press conference to reportedly announce that the company is somehow back in business. We have no idea what that company will look like or even what it will be called, but you can bet we’ll be tuning at at 11 a.m. German time to find out.
