Sno Drift Rally

After losing both Ken Block and Travis Pastrana last year, Subaru’s American rally efforts are undergoing a bit of rebuilding. The factory-backed Pleiades team took to the stages for the first time this season at Sno*Drift 2011 in Atlanta, Michigan, and despite a solid effort, driver Dave Mirra found himself three minutes and 53.1 seconds behind the father and son team of Travis and Terry Hanson in their 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Their win made United States rallying history as the duo became the first Super Production class effort to win a National Rally America event.

Day one saw Sno*Drift favorites Antoine L’Estage and David Higgins both forced to retire, leaving the Hanson duo to widen the gap between themselves and their closest competitors. Mirra, meanwhile, was handicapped by a tire puncture that saw the factory Subaru team fall all the way to fifth place before clawing its way back to take the silver.

The Hanson team was joined on the podium by Joseph Burke, another Super Production class contender. Burke was last year’s Rookie of the Year, and managed to give Mirra a solid fight for second place despite limited experience on snow and ice. Hit the jump for an excellent recap video.

Journalist Sue Mead, racer Darren Skilton become first U.S. team to win a class in Dakar Rally

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor 2011 Dakar Rally

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is still proving that it can do whatever deed needs done, whenever it needs doing. Sue Mead and Darren Skilton managed to pilot a largely stock version of the desert-raiding pickup through all 12 stages of this year’s Dakar rally. The team survived 16 days of some of the most brutal terrain on the South American continent and covered over 11,800 miles in the process. Their effort was enough to net the Raptor a 40th place finish over all and a first place finish in the OP class.

In fact, from what we hear, Mead and Skilton were the only contestants to even finish in the OP class, even with big names like Robbie Gordon gunning for the win.

That marks the first time that an American crew has ever managed to take a class win in the history of the Dakar Rally. The F-150 SVT Raptor that Mead and Skilton campaigned boasted the same 5.4-liter V8 that it rolled off the production line with, though a larger cooling system was fitted to handle the harsh temperatures of the course. Likewise, the pickup was equipped with a host of other race-capable bits including a new locker system for the differentials, more robust shocks, springs and tires.

Overall, Volkswagen took the top three spots in the 2011 Dakar Rally. BMW filled out the remaining spots in the top five with its entries. Hit the jump for the press release.

Subaru Canada’s version of Choose Your Own Adventure – Click above to watch video after the jump

Remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? The series, which sold over 250 million copies between 1979 and 1998, allowed you to choose your path through the story, but not every path led to a happy ending. The rally team from Subaru Canada must have read a few of these books yet decided to make any and all choices lead down the same awesome path, just from a slightly different viewpoint.

Strapping a gaggle of HD cameras onto a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, the team was able to load all the footage up to YouTube, where the viewer can select the viewing angle of his or her choice, be it the dash cam, bumper cam, clutch cam or side cam.

The driver is Pat Richard, the navigator is Alan Ockwell, and the quartet of camera angles is the Choose Your Own Adventure book we wish we could have read as a kid. Slide over the crest to view the clips.

Porsche GT3 rally drift

Porsche 911 GT3 tackling a gentle left – Click above to watch video after the jump

Watching a Porsche 911 GT3 manhandled on public roads is a wonderful way to spend time. How much time? How about 16 minutes and 24 seconds? That’s what Olaf Dobberkau and Alexandra König – the winners of the 2010 Deutsche Rallye Series – have compiled for our viewing pleasure. Unlike other motorsports videos, it’s mercifully devoid of a crap soundtrack, and instead it’s filled with the sonorous sounds of the GT3’s flat six and the squeals of the tires fighting for traction. It’s an endless series of slides and drifts, and it’s awaiting you after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Cpmarcelm!

New Stratos unveiled in retro Alitalia rally livery [w/video]

New Stratos in Alitalia livery – Click above to view in slightly higher resolution

The New Stratos has been drumming up a world of enthusiasm. And with good reason: the original was one of the most iconic rally machines ever devised, and the modern tribute looks to be living up to the legend in the grandest of style. That hasn’t stopped some from saying the design doesn’t look enough like the original, but that could very well come down to the paint scheme.

No, what we really need is to see it in the same livery displayed on the original in its heyday. Fortunately that’s just what they brought out (as a mock-up from the looks of things) at the car’s debut at Paul Ricard HTTT in the South of France. Want to see more from the unveiling? Follow the jump and feast your eyes on the video footage there to be viewed.

David Higgins

David Higgins joins Subaru Rally Team USA – Click above to watch video after the jump

The speculation over exactly who will be taking Travis Pastrana’s spot in the driver’s seat with Subaru Rally Team USA can officially be put to rest. David Higgins will be the new man in blue and yellow. Higgins has a résumé that’s chock full of rally wins, from championship titles in SCCA rally here in the states in 2002 and 2003 to a British National Rally Championship title in 2004. The guy also managed to walk away with a championship wins in group N in the British National Rally in 1997, 1999 and 2002.

Needless to say, the guy’s got the chops to keep the pace.

Subaru plans to campaign two cars next season, and while Higgins is the newest member of the team, the leader of the pack will BMX guru and rally beast Dave Mirra. Mirra managed to snag a Rookie of the Year award from Rally America for his efforts last season and took a slot on the podium during the Rally America Olympus event among others. Hit the jump for a look at a video of Higgins doing what he does best as well as the full press blast.

Ford teaming with The Amazing Race producers for Focus Rally America interactive marketing

Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Marketing/Advertising, Hatchback, Ford

Focus Rally AmericaRemember the Ford Fiesta Movement? The clever marketing campaign to get the advanced word out about its new small car was quite a success. The Fiesta had higher product awareness before its official launch than any other car in its class, and the creative types within Ford Motor Company are hoping to capture that same sort of magic in getting the word out about the 2012 Focus.

Ford has just announced that it will be partnering with the creators of the hit television show The Amazing Race to create Focus Rally America, an online, interactive reality series starring the automaker’s new global C-car. Six teams, comprised of two people and one Focus will participate in a five-week cross-country road rally with a grand prize of $100,000.

The cool thing, though, is that these individual teams won’t just be running through the usual gauntlet of planned challenges. Ford is making the most of social media, and the teams will benefit from interactive online support from fans. The online followers can provide clues to help the participants along their routes, and Ford will be awarding ten brand new Focuses to the biggest supporters of the winning team. The whole event will be brought to you via webisodes on Hulu, beginning around February 1, 2011.

Casting is already under way, so if the Focus Rally America sounds like your thing, head to focusrally.com to sign up. In-person auditions will also be held in 11 major cities around the United States, with more information available at the event’s website. For the full details about Focus Rally America, check out the automaker’s press release after the jump.

Jimmy Girvan and Mike Ramsay head out for stage one – Click above to watch video after the jump

James “Jimmy” Girvan, former Scottish Rally Champion, has died as a result of a crash at the this past weekend’s Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally in Scotland. According to the BBC News, Girvan’s Subaru Impreza collided with some boulders then was thrown into the surrounding trees. Mike Ramsay, Girvan’s co-driver, had to be cut free from the vehicle but he escaped with a minor arm injury. Jimmy Girvan, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the tragic accident, race organizers shut down the event, which itself serves as a memorial to legendary driver Colin McRae who was killed in a helicopter accident in 2007.

We have video footage of the rally cars heading out from the first stage, including Girvan’s red Subaru Impreza. It was the last stage he finished at the event before his crash in Stage 2. You can watch the video after the jump, with Girvan and Ramsay pulling up to the starting line around the 1:20 mark. Our deepest sympathies go out to Girvan’s family, friends and colleagues. Thanks for the tips, all.

Straight to the Finnish line: Kimi Raikkonen wins his first rally

Kimi's Raikkonen's rally car

Okay, so it wasn’t a championship-level international stage, but just the same, Kimi Raikkonen has won his first rally. The event in question, called Rallye Vosgien, forms part of the French national series, and was contested by Kimi’s Citroën Junior Team as practice ahead of the WRC Rally of France.

The former F1 world champion and his co-pilot, Kaj Lindstrom, took their Citroën C4 to the finish line over three minutes ahead of the nearest competitor, Quentin Gilbert, driving a Renault Clio Maxi. Given the similar conditions – and that Citroën Junior Team had used up all its allotted test time – Vosgien proved an ideal warm-up to the main event set to take place at the end of the month.

43 Fiestas sweepstakes kicks off with excellent NASCAR vs. Rally footage

43 Fiestas Ken Block vs. A.J. Allmendinger

Ken Block takes on AJ Allmendinger – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ford has officially lit a fire under its 43 Fiestas campaign. As you may recall, the promotion aims to hand out a raft of prizes, from 43 LCD flat-screen TVs to airfare, lodging and tickets to the Ford NASCAR 400 Sprint Cup race for 43 lucky grand-prize winners. Of those souls, one will be awarded a special Ford Fiesta, but should AJ Allmendinger happen to walk away with the checkers, everyone in the grand-prize lot will receive a new Fiesta to call their very own. That’s impressive and all, but not nearly so interesting as the videos after the jump.

You see, to sell the sweepstakes, Ford enlisted the help of NASCAR legend Richard Petty, rally heathen Ken Block and AJ Allmendinger, the current pilot of the #43 NASCAR racer. What happens when the three meet on a track? Let’s just say that while we weren’t entirely surprised by the outcome, we’re wholeheartedly in favor of this type of motorsports crossbreeding in the future.

Now let’s see that 3,000-pound NASCAR bruiser fling itself down a rally stage.
