Report: Nissan to add Rogue, Murano hybrid around 2015

2014 Nissan Rogue Spy Shots

Except for the limited-production, Toyota-assisted Altima Hybrid, Nissan has pretty much shied away from hybrid vehicles, but that is all about to change. As a part of a plan to launch a total of 15 electrified vehicles by 2016, Nissan is launching the Pathfinder Hybrid, which goes on sale this fall, and we’ve heard in the past that the Altima will get another hybrid variant, as well. Now, Green Car Reports is confirming that the Murano and the smaller Rogue (seen above in next-gen prototype phase) will both receive hybrid powertrains.

Though riding on different platforms, both hybrid crossovers could share the system being introduced in the Pathfinder, consisting of a 2.5-liter supercharged four-cylinder engine, a 22-horsepower electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. There is still no word on when the next-gen Murano will arrive, but the 2014 Nissan Rogue will be introduced on September 10.

Teased: Nissan says next Rogue coming September 10

2014 Nissan Rogue teaser

The Nissan Rogue has been around since 2007, and after nearly seven years on the market, it’s about due for replacement. Which is just what Nissan has announced is coming up next down the pipeline.

The Japanese automaker didn’t reveal much to go with this teaser image of the headlight and front fender, saying only that “the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue will push the envelope of CUV design starting on September 10 when it is unveiled.” That’s the day on which the Frankfurt Motor Show opens its doors for press previews, so it’s pretty safe to say that we’ll be seeing it at the Messe.

The news follows the spy shots we brought you two weeks ago. Expect the design to follow the lead set forth by the Hi-Cross concept from Geneva last year, with production to take place in Tennessee.

Spy Shots: 2014 Nissan Rogue gives us our best look yet

2014 Nissan Rogue spy shots

Nissan is reportedly fast-tracking the development of its next-generation Rogue crossover, and judging by this latest set of spy shots, the new small CUV is coming along quite nicely.

To no one’s surprise, the new Rogue takes the vast majority of its design cues from the Hi-Cross concept that debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and specific elements like the pronounced wheel arches, angular nose, flat roofline and more stylized taillmaps should make for a Rogue that’s far more style conscious than the model it replaces. This stronger design language should help the new Rogue to better stand out in the sea of Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 rivals.

There’s far more to the new Rogue than just some swoopier sheetmetal, though. This crossover is expected to be the first vehicle to ride on the Renault-Nissan CMF (Common Module Family) platform, an architecture flexible enough to eventually support a host of new products. As we reported earlier, the next Rogue will be built in the US, in Tennessee.

According to our spies, Nissan plans to launch the new Rogue in the 2014 model year, and we won’t rule out a possible debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November. For now, take a gander these new spy shots.

Spy Shots: Next Nissan Rogue flaunts its new look

Filed under: Spy Photos, Crossover, Nissan

2014 Nissan Rogue spy shots

Remember last April, when Nissan told us it would be launching five new models over the course of 15 months? Well, we’ve seen the Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and Versa Note, so that magical fifth model has to be the new Rogue, which our spy photographers recently caught testing. Despite looking like a hodge-podge of black duct tape and garbage bags, we can clearly see that the new Rogue takes a lot of its styling cues from the Hi-Cross concept that Nissan showed at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. And that’s fine – we found that CUV concept to be a decidedly handsome thing, and certainly more attractive than the weird little Rogue that currently roams the streets.

Details surrounding the next Rogue are still very unclear, though our spies suggest that it could be powered by a new 1.2-liter supercharged four-cylinder engine, good for something like 113 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. We’ll see about that, since those numbers represent a drastic drop in power versus the current Rogue – to the tune of 57 hp and 35 lb-ft. A diesel engine for other markets is expected to be on offer, and a plug-in hybrid version is also rumored to be in the works, though that won’t show up at the vehicle’s initial launch.

If Nissan sticks to its plan of showing these five new models in the course of 15 months, that means we should see the Rogue in July. Of course, since things don’t always go as planned, it could be many more months before all that camouflage is taken away.

Report: Nissan to build next Rogue in U.S.

The Detroit News
reports that the next generation Rogue will be produced in the U.S., following remarks by Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares. The modestly priced mid-size crossover would be produced at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tennessee plant in 2013, shifting production from Nissan’s plant in Kyushu, Japan.

The reasons to produce the Rogue stateside are many, but the biggest has to do with money and volume. Tavares says the increased value of the Yen is one reason, and the move would make even more sense considering the automaker intends to produce 100,000 units of the CUV each year. Nissan received a $1.4 billion loan from the Energy Department to build the Tennessee plant on the condition that it builds 150,000 Nissan Leafs and another 200,000 battery packs each year.

A Good Option Among Many Gets a Little Better

We don’t envy the hordes of product planners working in the auto world. America’s concept of quality transportation seems to shift with the seasons, leaving analysts scrambling to anticipate amorphous market demands while automakers fill barely justifiable voids in their product line. If you need proof, look no further than the scorching hot CUV segment. Buyers have developed a seemingly unquenchable thirst for small, car-based high riders, and nearly every automaker sports at least one tall hatch in their lineup.

Nissan hopped on the small crossover train belately in 2007 when it introduced the Rogue as a 2008 model. The pint-sized ‘ute borrowed plenty of styling cues from the likes of the larger Murano and came equipped with an efficient and capable drivetrain built to suit a variety of tastes. But that was three years ago. In order to keep the Rogue as fresh as possible until a full-on next-generation model arrives, the company has rolled out a mildly updated version for 2011. It may not be the front-runner in its class, but the refreshed 2011 Rogue promises to hit all of the same notes that American buyers are singing right now. We spent a week with one to find out.

2011 Nissan Rogue shows up at 2010 Z Car Convention

We managed to make our way to the 23rd annual Z Car Convention at the Nissan North America headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee this weekend. Aside from a slew of Zed-related goodness of unmatched acclaim, the 2011 Nissan Rogue was also rolled out as part of the celebration. Overall, the little crossover sticks close to last year’s recipe, though some subtle visual updates help the ute better stand out from the rest of the mall parking lot crowd.

The tweaked front fascia now has a more angular look aimed at giving the nose of the Rogue some definition. Likewise, the grille has been massaged to incorporate a larger Nissan badge, and the optional fog lights now reside in sculpted inserts. A chrome strip spans the 2011 Rogue’s flanks, and a similar piece of brightwork now glams up the rear liftgate. Lastly, buyers who opt for the 2011 Nissan Rogue Krom or Rogue SL will get new 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, too. Otherwise, it’s much of the same from Nissan’s compact people hauler. Hit the jump for the official press release.
