Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition Concept

Back in April, Maserati announced a new partnership with men’s clothier Ermenegildo Zegna. We wondered at the time how a Maserati could possibly get any more stereotypically Italian stylish, but now the Modenese automaker is presenting the answer in this fresh take on the new Quattroporte.

When the doors open at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, Maserati will unveil the Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition concept car. That’s their name, not ours, and if you’re wondering how a production vehicle could be turned at once into both a concept and a limited edition, well… we don’t know, either. Maserati says that it previews a production version to follow next year.

So, confusing nomenclature aside, what are we looking at here? For starters, there’s a special platinum-color paint finish with tiny aluminum flecks and a gloss-black primer to give it that extra-deep luster. And the interior has been upholstered in “moka” and “greige,” with leather seats, door panels and headliner and other surfaces finished in Zegna’s own textiles.

We have the feeling pictures probably don’t do it justice, as strikes us as the kind of thing you have to see in person to appreciate, so we’ll look forward to seeing how it comes across in the flesh next week.

Official: Acura to roll out NSX Prototype for Mid-Ohio IndyCar race

Acura NSX prototype lapping Mid Ohio

Acura will tease us yet again with its next-gen NSX when it makes an appearance at Mid-Ohio Raceway before the circuit’s IndyCar race early next month. To be fair, the car’s in-motion debut won’t take the form of a production model – that’s still a ways off – the vehicle will be a prototype. It’ll be sporting custom graphics and an eye-catching paint (wrap?) job to draw the attention of the spectators, but really, we just want to hear this thing rounding the legendary road course at full chat.

The NSX prototype doesn’t look to be much different from the various showcars we’ve seen over the last couple of years, with the same mid-engined, hybrid V6 power and all-wheel drive all present and accounted for.

The display will take place before the Honda Indy 200 IndyCar Series on August 4. The race itself starts at 3:00 pm and will be shown on NBC Sports Network.

Exclusive: Amazing Scion FR-S Soapbox car ready to roll in Red Bull race this weekend

Scion FR-S Soapbox Derby Car

Remember the good old days when you and your dad spent countless hours in a dimly-lit garage to piece together an old ramshackle Soapbox Derby car for an upcoming downhill race? It probably was constructed out of ancient materials, rocked wagon wheels and had a cable brake that may or may not have stopped you before kissing something solid. Well, my friends, just like the rapture of tomorrow, those days are over.

Scion FR-S Soapbox Derby CarRenowned concept car builder Five:Axis is ready to throw down with a truly outstanding build for an upcoming Soapbox Derby. Being put together by Red Bull, this ain’t your regular Soapbox Derby, and this certainly ain’t your average backyard special. This is a custom one-off fiberglass micro-body based on the super stylish Scion FR-S Concept unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April. Since Five:Axis is well intertwined with Toyota, Lexus and Scion, it looks like they got some design studio CAD files to design the shell and the same slinky red metallic paint that the FR-S was wearing for its first stage appearance.

Think the underpinnings are still ’50s Soapbox technology? You couldn’t be further off because the custom aluminum space frame features a TEIN coilover suspension and Wilwood disc brakes. But all that technology isn’t going to be worth jack if there isn’t a ringer behind the wheel. The Five:Axis Scion FR-S will be piloted by none other than Dai Yoshihara, the Formula D drifter who slides the Falken Tire Nissan 240SX. Dai knows a thing or two about grip as well since he also competes in the Redline Time Attack Tuner Car Championship in an imported Civic Type R.

However, at this point we’re not sure what part of Dai’s expertise is really applicable for the upcoming Redbull Soapbox derby race. The only race on the calendar in the U.S. this year, it’s slated to be held tomorrow, May 21 at 5th & Grand in downtown LA and promises to be nothing like what you might envision a traditional Soapbox derby to be. There are sharp 90-degree turns, NASCAR-style banks and myriad of sweet jumps. Although it appears the Five:Axis build will hold together during the abuse, we are not sure that Dai’s run will be crash or injury free.

Rumormill: Lamborghini to roll out 800-hp Aventador SV a few years down the line?

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Lamborghini, Rumormill

Lamborghini Aventador SV renderingThe Diablo had one. The Murciélago did, too. So it’s only safe to assume that, a few years down the line, Lamborghini will create a Super Veloce version of the new Aventador. But an assumption is about all this is amounting to at this point.

Consider, if you will, two factors in anticipating the next SV: timeline and output. The Diablo SV arrived in 1995 (five years after the Diablo was first introduced) and packed 510 horsepower (compared to the standard Diablo’s 492, though there was a more powerful Diablo SE30 Jota with nearly 600 horsepower before the model was phased out). The Murciélago SV, meanwhile, debuted as the most powerful version some eight years after the original with 661 horsepower to the first model’s 572.

Apply the same logic to an eventual Aventador SV and we’re looking at nearly 800 horsepower, if and when it arrives some five to eight years from now (several years after the anticipated roadster comes along). Now that’s a mouthful and a half, and though there’s not much weight to be trimmed off the new Aventador’s carbon-fiber monocoque chassis (compared to the Murcielago’s steel frame), who knows what kind of new materials might be developed by the time the Super Veloce comes rumbling along.

Until then we’ll just have to make do with the current version and its 691 horsepower, 2.9-second sprint to 60 and 217-mph top speed, and try not to get ahead of ourselves. Which is just as well, because with those kinds of numbers, not much else will be, either.

2012 Hyundai Veloster B-roll footage – Click above to watch video after the jump

B-roll footage isn’t necessarily the most exciting visual or aural experience, but it allows us to see new production models strutting their stuff out on the road. Hyundai is wasting no time in getting the B-roll footage out of the recently debuted 2012 Veloster, and here we see a pair of brightly-colored three-door coupes mixing it up on a desert test track.

As it typical with B-roll footage, there’s no music and the only sound comes from what the microphones picked up. Our suggestion? Go to YoutubeDoubler.com and spice it up yourself, though you know you’re just going to add music from the movie Inception. Click past the jump to see the 2012 Hyundai Veloster in action.
